Welcome aboard Grover! Thanks for all your west coast info! Let some of the
other guys out there know about the group so we can keep things current.

I've posted a URL for "GPS Babel" in the "Links" area. This is a freeware program that will convert from Google Earth .kml format to a variety of formats that can be imported into GPS navigation systems. There are several dozen formats to choose from including the nearly universal .gpx format.
Note that the "Railfan's Guide" posted on this site is in .kmz format and not .kml. This was done to speed downloading as the .kmz file is a fraction of the size of the .kml. You will need to load "Railfan's Guide" into Google Earth and do a File -> Save -> Save Place As ... -> Save as type - kml before using GPS Babel.
I have used GPS Babel in the past to export the file to "Topo North America" with great success. I can now drive or take a train trip with Topo NA running on the laptop with my GPS USB hockey puck and it not only shows my current location, speed, etc., it also shows ALL of the data points in "Railfan's Guide" on the map as push-pin locations. Really neat!
There are a few limitations. Waypoints with the same name show up as Name1, Name2, etc. and the converter does not pass along the Google Earth "Description" field. Therefore the notes that show up when you click on a location in Google Earth such as "HC - 17' 2" will NOT be included on the Topo North America display. Also, the various graphical symbols used in Google Earth are not passed along. All the symbols become push-pins (or other symbol of your choice) in Topo North America.
Nevertheless, its pretty cool to take a train trip and see when the interlockings are coming up, when you're approaching a defect detector or when you're nearing a station stop and listen to it all on the scanner!
I have no involvement or financial interest in GPS Babel. However, since this is a freeware program, if you find it useful please consider making a donation to keep its development moving forward.
Finally, this is only one of many conversion programs out there. If you use one that works better than GPS Babel, please chime in and let the group know about it. If there is a program that is vastly superior to GPS Babel (converts symbols, etc.) - even if its a program that must be purchased - please let us know.
To all:
The December 19, 2010 build of the Railfan's Guide has just been posted. It
includes interlockings on CP's Shuswap and Mountain Subs along with a few other
additions.
I finally distilled some of the data from a trip to the Canadian Rockies this
fall. If you've ever been to this area you know what a beautiful location for
mountain railroading this is. Take a look.
Any additions or corrections are welcomed.
Dan
To all:
Railfan's Guide - Build of 12/20 is now available in the "Files" Section.
The update includes a number of interlockings culled from a HUGE list of
waypoints provided by John Schodowski as well as additional Defect Detector
locations on the CSX North End Sub (Florence Division) provided by Kevin Pratt.
Thanks guys!
Dan Rapak
Take a look in the info box on the left side of the web page. There are
selections for "Home - Messages - Files - Links - Members."
"Files" contains the current database. "Links" contains the hyperlink to GPS
Babel.

Dan: When I bring my group page up, in the left shaded section I see
Home, Messages, Post, and Files. Then there is a line then Groups Labs,
(Beta), Applications and that's all. I don't see any mention of Links
here now. Did something get lost on the way to me I wonder? Thanks
for your help here and elsewhere over the year and to you all a
happy holiday season. John Acton
I may have had a group setting wrong. Give it another try and let me know if you
see the "Links" selection now.

Hi Brad and Welcome Aboard!
This was done in the interest of standardization. Every Google Earth user has
their own preferences as to name formats, symbols, etc. One guy might use a red
push-pin symbol to indicate a defect detector. Another guy might use an
exclamation point, etc., etc.
This group has only been in existence for two days and already we have more than
250 members. If each member posted their own file in their own format we would
soon have quite a hodge-podge of confusing information.
By consolidating everything into one file, all data points can be standardized
into one neat package.

Hello Dick,
None of the files are zipped. The data file is a Google Earth .kmz file. To open
it, download the file and run Google Earth. Then go to:
Files -> Open -> Railfan's Guide for Google Earth
The waypoint information will be imported into your Google Earth program. You
will need to check the "Railfan's Guide.." checkbox to have the information
display.
Note that checking that box will turn on EVERYTHING and there are tons of
waypoints in the file. The display can get very crowded. You may want to open
the sub folders and only check a particular railroad or rail line of interest.
The other files in the folder are pdf files. You need Adobe Reader to see them.
A link for a free download of Adobe Reader is included in the "Links" section.
Merry Christmas!

Google Earth is a compilation of aerial photographs and satellite imagery from a
great variety of sources. As a result, image dates vary depending on where on
the surface of the earth you are looking.
You can however, "go back in time" as it were. Google Earth normally shows the
most recent image it has available for a given location. But if you click on the
"clock" icon or go to
View -> Historical Imagery
you will get a slider bar that allows you to select older images. Tick marks on
the slider indicate dates for which images are on file.
For example, if you find an old turntable, you can sometimes go back to older
images and see what the round house looked like before it was torn down.
That said, you won't find any images prior to the early 1900's. It was too
difficult to obtain aerial photographs before the Wright brothers invented the
airplane. :)
You cannot go to real time as Google Earth does not offer live satellite views.

I must be missing something here. When I check the files listing I get three
new files which are the three pdf files. No other files show up so I have not
been able to download any of the google data files. Help.
Jim
Goog morning Jim!
There are indeed three files in the files section at the moment, but only the
first two are pdfs/ The third file "Railfan's Guide for Google Earth.kmz" is the
Google Earth database in kmz format.
To open it, run Google Earth, then select
File -> Open -> Railfan's Guide for Google Earth.kmz
You will need to check the checkbox for "Railfan's Guide... " to have the
waypoints show up on the imaging. However, there are a TON of waypoints there
and the display can get rather busy, so you may want to go into the sub folders
and check only the railroad or even the particular rail line you are interested
in.
Good luck!

I just downloaded the latest version of Google Earth 3D . .
and I must tell you, I am not just disappointed, I am p'oed.
I'm biting my tongue as I type this, attempting to maintain tact.
The resolution in my favorite areas, the Feather River Canyon,
and Donner have deteriorated significantly. I am referring to
close-up, zoom in for detail. The images of May 29, 2007 are
gone. And these were excellent high noon views. In the Pulga
area, there has been a reversion to older gray brown segments
taken during the winter and off hours. DO NOT download this
or delete your old version until You Are Sure You Want This !
If someone knows how I can restore 5.1.1 please let me know.
Give this link a try. I didn't go through the whole install process,
but it sounds like it gives you an option to install a specific version
somewhere during the installation. Let us know how it works.

I'm a little surprised by this, actually. The way I understand GoogleEarth works is that it downloads all the images from the internet, so if they changed the imagery for that area I'd think that it would affect all version of GE?

The download install version of Google Earth has nothing to do with the
images that you see. All of the images are on Google's servers. I am
running version Google Earth version 5.1.3535.3218 on Linux and see the
same fuzzy images of the Pulga are dated 2007 that you see.

Hello,
I am having trouble with the guide loading into GE. If I open it from the file
panel or double click on the file and GE launches, GE will immediately freeze.
I must use a control/alt/delete to stop the program.
I am running GE version 5.1.3533.1731. This is the last version to run in W2K
which is my operating system.
Any ideas?
Thank you and Merry Christmas.
