  • Siemens - Open Transport Network (OTN)
OTN (Open Transport Network) is Siemens Atea’s flexible private communication network, based on the fiber optic technology. OTN puts your entire world on a fiber! Today, OTN probably is the most powerful multiplexer for large, private environments with mixed communication needs, such as railways, metros, light rails, mines, airports, pipelines, and so on. OTN is exactly what its name implies: Open: It can handle nearly all existing physical interface standards, but also very specific communication protocols in special environments, via its interface cards. Transport: It carries different types of information (such as voice, data, LAN and video) completely transparently throughout the network, and this with high availability. Network: It is based on fiber optic technology in a future-proof network infrastructure, spanning any distance. The OTN system offers a capacity of 150 Mbps (OTN-150), 600 Mbps (OTN-600) and 2.5 Gbps (OTN-2500). Just pick the superhighway that suits you... Upgrading is a piece of cake. This offers our customers an excellent migration path. Info : otn@...

RailroadData's weekly links update is back online!

After numerous problems with Yahoo last fall, I gave up on trying to publish this list for a while. Lately they seem to have resolved the problems and so I'm going to try it again. Hopefully it will work better this time. I apologize for the interruption.

For those of you who are new to the list, here's what it's about. Approximately once a week, we'll publish a list of the new links that have been added to the RailroadData.com's link directory and search engine. We'll also fill you in on happenings at the other RailroadInfo.com websites. If you'd like to have your website added to our directory, please visit http://www.railroaddata.com/cgi-bin/links/add.cgi

RailroadForums.com site upgrades - RailroadForums.com has undergone quite a few changes since we last published this newsletter. We've added a photo gallery for members to post their photos. It now has over 1,500 photos, sorted by category for easier browsing.

The forum itself has a new look as well. We've added the VBportal system to the forum, creating a new start page. The home page is located at http://www.railroadforums.com/index.php?s= and provides an overview of the forum. It offers a daily photo, the latest photo gallery uploads, railroad news, polls, recent discussions and more. The new look has been very popular and we're seeing lots of new members. The upgrades also allow the forum to operate a little faster than it did previously.

Membership in RailroadForums.com is totally free. There is no charge for registration and there are no monthly frees. We don't have "premium memberships" either, everyone has access to all of the features.

Here are the new links for January 1st to 7th, 2003:

Finally, we're back online!

RailroadData.com has been running without interruption all summer.
However, this list had some technical problems last spring, and it
was rather difficult to resolve them. Yahoo said my e-mail was
bouncing, and wouldn't let me post to my own list! It seems it has
since decided my e-mail is working again, and I can post again...

Summer is a slow time for internet activity in general, and links in
particular. Hopefully our new links list will grow as Fall and Winter
bring folks back inside and online again. As always, feel free to
send your links to bob@...

In other news, http://www.railroadforums.com is going great,
with well over 100 messages per day! We've just added a new
photo gallery and it's getting lots of use. You can visit it at:

the Royal Train - http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page407.asp
It is perhaps somewhat misleading to talk of 'the Royal Train' because the modern train consists of carriages drawn from a total of eight purpose-built saloons, pulled by one of the two Royal Class 47 diesel locomotives, Prince William or Prince Henry. The exact number and combination of carriages forming a Royal Train is determined by factors such as which member of the Royal family is travelling and the time and duration of the journey. When not pulling the Royal Train, the two locomotives are used for general duties.

Oklahoma - Ollie's Station Restaurant - http://www.olliesstation.com/
Tulsa, OK - People long for the food they grew up with. That's what Ollie's cuisine is all about. Our food is cooked and seasoned like Mom and Grandma would prepare it. We have a comfortable "mom and pop" atmosphere. The old cafe style is enhanced by the railroad motif. Ten running trains, from G-scale to Z-scale, run the length of the dining room and through scale model cities and towns. Our walls and shelves abound with railroad memorabilia. Ollies is located in old downtown Redfork on a corner that's been here since 1894. The floor, walls and rafters in the center portion of the station are original, although they are covered with new materials. The northern most telegraph office projection towards the track is the original, the south two are copies. The overhang, roof pitch and knee braces under the eaves all reflect the old Ann Arbor Railroad heritage. Mt. Pleasant's Depot never looked this good. Pennsylvania - DiSalvo's Station Restaurant - http://www.disalvosrestaurant.com/
Latrobe, PA - History abounds in the architecture of DiSalvo's Station. Once through the tunnel, you enter the expansive atrium (formerly the train yard) where the cobblestone floor, ornate 10-foot limestone fountain, and abundant greenery give you the feeling of dining in a courtyard in old-town Italy. The area's high ceilings and overall size are demonstrated by the fact that a full-size railroad dining car is dwarfed by the room's expansiveness.

``DiSalvo's Station has a number of other individually unique "nooks and crannies" where one can indulge in fine dining, all accented with original, antique railroad memorabilia: the main dining room (the original concourse area), the adjacent tap room (formerly the ticket and luggage area), the Latrobe Room, or the Railway Express Office. Like the menu, choices abound among many distinct dining environments.

Pennsylvania - Lackawanna Station Hotel - http://www.radisson.com/scrantonpa

Pennsylvania - Tarentum Station Restaurant - http://tarentumstation.com/index.html
People lunching or dining at the Tarentum Station Restaurant don't talk in hushed voices. There is a hearty conviviality in the air, very much like the jolliness that must have prevailed during the train station's heyday.````Maybe it has to do with the fact that the trains still zoom by, traveling up and down the Allegheny River, just a few feet away from the restaurant. So you tend to speak up when you are asking for more rolls or telling your favorite story. You don't ever worry about laughing too loudly and you notice that long after the train is but a distant whistle, chugging its way through Creighton or Natrona, diners are still energized somehow by the spirit of the thing.

Pennsylvania - The Station Inn - http://www.stationinnpa.com/

The Yard Office Saloon, downstairs at The Inn, serves hot meals, sandwiches, drinks, and take out food. The Yard Office's original Men's Bar looks today much as it did in 1904 when it opened. As the train makes a leisurely round trip through the countryside you are served a wonderful five course meal all the while being entertained by our troupe of actors and actresses performing a comical interactive murder mystery. The show is more of a comedy versus a drama and the best way to describe the experience is that it is much like being in the front row at a comedy club, where you are likely to be involved in the show.

Players arrange custom trains by coupling and uncoupling cars in any order you choose. After setting up their custom trains, players are ready to begin specifying the game options. Use or edit the predefined pick-up and delivery schedules. If players delight in difficult situations and close calls, they can choose to control up to four trains on a layout. For the die-hard railroad enthusiast who enjoys a real challenge, import your own custom layouts from 3D Railroad Concept & Design(tm), including all 3D objects, grades and elevations.

Paul Civiletto is a watercolor painter whose work focuses on industrial and transportation scenes. Currently, his primary subjects are depictions of contemporary American railways. the Rail Art of John Winfield - http://www.winfieldrailart.com/
John Winfield is nationally known in the railroad community for his colorful paintings and prints. Depicting locomotives of ”fallen flags,” as well as current roads, in settings that recall the golden age or railroading, he incorporates both the painting and printing processes. Cycling the Kettle Valley Railway -
http://www.planet.eon.net/~dan/kvr.html
Hard core mountain bikers may scoff at the Kettle Valley Railway (KVR),
an abandoned railway bed that winds through south central British
Columbia between Midway and Hope. It is after all a typical railway bed
with grades that never exceed 2.2 %. But even the most radical mountain
biker will grip the handle bars a little tighter crossing trestles
hanging precariously on the sides of Myra Canyon. With countless
trestles and tunnels, and environs ranging from cool mountain forests to
Canada's only pocket desert the 600 km route offers an endless diversity
of experiences.
