Bob, yes, they also crack, and if water gets in them the bottom can get blown out. At Gary works in the 70s there was alway debris put it the bottom to help...

Yes they do they crack alot some mills when dumping slag they use a crane with a ball to bang the thimble to get the slag out I remember hearing the bongs...
