Yes they do  they crack alot   some mills when dumping slag they use a crane with a ball to bang the thimble to get the slag out   I remember hearing the bongs down the Sparrows Point plant at night   my dad work as molder in the foundry and made the molds for the Thimbles and Ingot molds  that close early 80s and he finished up 45 years of time at the BOF
