Memphis has a steam power plant south of the city. The stacks were an air pollution gage. There were white strips on the top of the stacks. If you could see the stripes (from downtown Memphis buildings) it was a very clear day. if you could see the stacks but not the stripes that was an average day. If you could not see the stack, it was a poor air quality day.

My office was on the 16th floor.

PRR's 30th Street Station opened in 1933.

Those old smoke stacks are a rapidly vanishing icon, from a time when nearly
every plant or large facility needed to generate its own steam and
electricity. Our "HARRISON - GMC" stack was dismantled
(brick-by-brick) about 15 years ago.

Yeah, its been rough around here lately! They took down an old chimney at
30th St Station's old PRR powerhouse last week. I was over doing some night
photo shooting the other day at the Cira Center's parking garage which
overlooks the Amtrak/SEPTA/NJT lines into/out of 30th St and it looks odd
without it. I think they said it was built in the 1920's or 1930's. Too bad.

OHIO VINTAGE COAL'S website is www.ohiovintagecoal.com

For those interested in learning about an locomotive the we preserved from an active pipe mill in Alabama, see http://industrialrail.5u.com/photo_55.html  Nice images of the narrow gauge tracks in the plant, our Greensburg ("dinkey") locomotive, hot metal car and hot metal pour.  Check out the rest of the site for information regarding our preservation efforts and restoration projects.

Don’t fret Brendan, as the Norfolk Southern coal pier in Sandusky, Ohio still has the classic “kick-back” track, etc. There was a bus tour of the facility during the NMRA regional meet in 2008.

I got my book today from Lulu Pubs ( a self publishing company). It is
decent for the price and has a lot of vintage photos. Have not read it
yet (actually I seldom read industrial books but more browse them). Some
of the drawings could be a little crisper but I understand his
difficulty as I sometimes get drawings for Lineside that are hard to
make crisp despite working on them with Photoshop. All in all I think
it is worth the price and provides a nice history of silvery pig iron in
Ohio.

Well, the pier and ore cranes had a good run. The Conrail Historical

Mainly Hit and Miss engines but some steam powered during the shows. They also
power ice cream makers with small engines and the final product is delicious.

And you missed seeing me and our layout at IRM by a week too. ;-) We set up at IRM every August for Day out with Thomas. It's our way of helpiong the museum with another attraction.

Sycamore, IL hosts a threshing bee in August of every year. The club
has a 1920 Corliss engine built for compressing ammonia refrigerant.
You can see the engine here: http://www.threshingbee.org/corliss.html

I had no idea that such an event is held in Sycamore. I was there the
Saturday before the bee last August on my way to IRM. The only thing
going on that day was a police car show.

Sycamore, IL hosts a threshing bee in August of every year. The club
has a 1920 Corliss engine built for compressing ammonia refrigerant.
You can see the engine here: http://www.threshingbee.org/corliss.html
