It is funny that the MorningSun Penna. Shortlines in Color has an entry for the Etna & Montrose but no photos! Bob

I used to get Discovery Canada but it has since disappeared from my cable line-up. I saw mighty ships listed but was never able to watch it. Bob

I was following a web link about the Emma Maersk container ship to a program called Mighty Ships. It appears that maybe it's only shown on Canadian feeds? I can't watch on my computer in California, and perusing my satellite guide doesn't have any episodes soon.

Has anybody on this list seen the show via TV/cable/satellite, or by computer?

Looks like there's an episode about the Tregurtha, too.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but there is a website which offers free downloads of USGS maps.

These maps are great for railfanning and other sorts of exploration. Bob

Interesting.

I have dug up an article on the construction of the Isabella furnaces by the
SIA. Link is below. Perhaps this might give a clue?

Hmmm, that car looks oddly similar to the home built cars that Brier Hill Steel had, based on drawing 109306.  Could our drawings have been the inspiration for this model?

John - car looks great, can't wait to start building a fleet of these.  I just recently built a Grandt 25 Tonner, regauging the wheels to HOn30.  About,  your comment on your site about the purists -  yes most steel narrow gauge was 36" but Edgar Thomson used 30" in their open hearth plant, and J&L had 24" gauge somewhere in their facilities.  So it's not totally far fetched.

It was done by a guy called Allan Downes - its the third one he's done the first
was featured in the same magazine a couple of years ago. The guy is an awesome
builder and the spped he builds at is fernominal!!!
Its loosly based on the CORUS Plant at Scunthorpe. He and I took an 'informal'
tour of the site earlier this year and I think he'll be building another if he
gets permission from'her in doors'!

Hello everyone,
Im new to this group and recently discoverd that my website has caused some
interest to members after a posting from Dave Wilson.
My name is Brian Hawkins, a 50 year old train driver, living at Gosport on the
south coast of England.
My main interest in life is steam traction on Chinese railways and during
sixteen visits between 1994 and 2009 i have visited a number of steelworks
across this vast country.
The following steelworks that i have visited over the years include:
Anshan
Baotou
Beitai
Benxi
Handan
Tangshan
Xuanhua
The above mentiond steelworks can all be viewed at http:brianhawkins.fotopic.net
Please note that i am no expert on the workings of steelworks, i just get
satisfaction of filming steam locomotives in these locations.
I hope my website is of some interest to some of you.
Best Wishes,
Brian Hawkins.

I believe that the series is only on Discovery Channel Canada. I can't
get it here in the Buffalo area on the Time Warner package I have. A
friend of mine from Toronto made a copy of the Tregurtha episode. It's
pretty good.

Has anybody on this list seen the show via TV/cable/satellite, or by computer?

Looks like there's an episode about the Tregurtha, too.

Good shot, thanks Roger! You don't see those ingot buggies very much anymore! I did photograph some at Mittal Coatesville last year but that was the only time I've seen any in recent times!

I just posted a photo (Allegheny Ludlum) taken in Aug of 2008 at Alllegheny Ludlum. I was working in the area and was just driving around at the end of the day and happened upon this shot.

the huge expansion that is going on at Alllegheny Ludlums Brackenridge Plant which is about about 12 miles down river from BAGDAD. they are adding another furnace.  its a huge  plant . but very interesting too. surprisingly none of their plants in this area have a lot of people have a lot of people laid off. if you are interested in the Kiski Junction, contact me off list and i can give you all the info you need.

Hmm...might be time to take a little road trip... Never heard of the Kiski RR. Thanks for the info on the Bagdad plant. I didn't realize there were 2 other plants operating in tandem with this one. I did find something on the expanision of the rolling mill facility and it not being affected by layoffs. Is this still the case? I am assuming it could be since electrical equipment is always in demand.

An interesting thing about Kiski Junction Railroad, is that it may be
expanding soon.

They were supposed to reactivate some old trackage to service a coal
mine, but the plan was delayed. Here are two articles:

Was it ever an integrated mill? I looked it up online and found out it specializes in "Grain-Oriented  Electrical Steel". Apparently, this type of silicone steel is used in electrical transmission equipment.
