ADMIN: Fair Offer Policy

Hi everyone,

Whilst its great to see so many quality offers on Santa Cruz
Freecycle, we do realize that sometimes it can be frustrating to see
an OFFERED item you feel you could really make use of that has been
already taken by the time you see the post. Perhaps it is because you
are on Daily Digest (*very* common now, with 50 or more posts per day!)
or because you only have access to email at certain times of the day
or in the library.

Right now in many cases members will offer their goods to the first
person to respond. However, that gives a distinct advantage to those
members who spend a lot of time at the computer. These people are able
to reply as soon as an item is offered and so will *always* be`first
in the queue.'

While its completely up to the individual how to pass on their
items, we would like to propose an easy and alternative method of
making your offers that we think puts everyone on a level playing
field. This method is successfully in use in other Freecycle groups
around the globe.

The method is called FOP (Fair Offer Policy) and by putting FOP at
the end of your subject line it states that you are willing to wait a
period of time (totally your choosing, maybe 8-48 hours) before
making a decision on who to make the offer to. That gives everyone who
would like the item a chance, and takes the emphasis away from being
fastest on the 'reply' button. The offerer gets the chance to choose
who they give their goods to perhaps based on the reason given for
wanting it, distance between offerer and receiver or whatever is
important to you. One could even put all the names in a hat and choose
one!

Again, this method is completely optional, but hopefully you will
think its a fair policy for all concerned.

All the best,
Lisa, Maria, Kerri

“FREECYCLE(TM) NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK. Please take

or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither
the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible

SAFETY. Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging
for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the
potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up.
Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. If you,
for example, are a single woman living alone, you may want to say that you'll
leave the item on the front porch while you are not home or arrange for a

Subject: File - Hidden email addresses on Santa Cruz County Freecycle
SantaCruzCountyFreecycle@yahoogroups.com
Send Email Send Email

It is understandable to want to protect your privacy on the internet. As you
know, Freecyle(TM) policy encourages that attitude.

However, some people hide their email address towards this end. The only problem
with that is that no one on the Freecycle group can email you in response to a
WANTED, OFFER, and so on. That leads to general posts from other members, asking
for contact assistance.

This creates a lot of extra work for the moderators. So there are new rules for
hidden email addresses:

1. No new member will be accepted if their email address is hidden. If they
respond to the survey, they will get an explanation and the following
instructions on how to make their email available. If they don't respond within
a week, we will deny their membership.

2. Posts from current members with hidden email addresses without contact
information will be rejected. We *won't* go back to search out your email and
add it in, like we have in the past. If we have the member's email, we'll try to
notify them of the rejection.

-------------------

It is very easy to unhide your email address.

On the home page,
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/SantaCruzCountyFreecycle/
select: "Edit Membership" (should be near the upper left)

Scroll down a bit to the section with the text:
Email Address Display
Your email address is always hidden from group members except in
messages you post.

UNCHECK the box that says: "Hide my email and IP address from
the group moderators."

Save these changes, and you are done!

Thank you all for your understanding and assistance.

We'd like to remind you all of other local Freecycle(TM) and like minded groups.
As always, post to your local group first, then to others after a day or so if
there has been no response.

I'm including the six Freecycle local groups (Santa Cruz Freecycle, San Lorenzo
Valley Freecycle, Watsonville Freecycle, Cafe SLV, Monterey Peninsula Freecycle,
and San Jose Freecycle). There are also Free pages online for Craigslist and our
local Great Exchange newspaper.

1. Santa Cruz Freecycle is for all of Santa Cruz County. This is a large area,
if any of you feel the need for a smaller Freecycle group, email us at
SantaCruzCountyFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com . We can help you set up a
Freecycle for your area.

2. The San Lorenzo Valley Freecycle is for Ben Lomond, Felton, Scotts Valley,
basically the mountain regions around Highway 9.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SanLorenzoValleyFreecycle/

3. The *New and Improved* Watsonville Freecycle is for Watsonville, Coralitos
and the surrounding area.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Watsonville_CA_Freecycle/

4. Monterey Peninsula Freecycle. They limit the membership to only those in
their zip codes, but if you live or work that a way, you can join.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MPFreecycle/

5. Just over the hill:
Los Gatos Freecycle
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/los_gatos_freecycle/
Saratoga Freecycle
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/saratogafreecycle/

Got something cool, but not really Freecycle material? The Cafe SLV is the place
for you! It covers the Santa Cruz county area where you can post things such
barter, coupons, trades, ask advice, rooms for rent, garage sales, community
service announcements, and so forth. It is also the polling place for Santa Cruz
Freecyle. You can even list your business in the Database.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CafeSLV/

Got something you're not quite ready to give away? There is a brand new "garage
sale" type group, Santa Cruz Cheapcycle:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SantaCruzCheapcycle/

There is also a Cafe group for Santa Clara.
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCC_CAFE/

Some other organizations have free pages as well.

Craigslist San Francisco Bay Area Free page

This is a particle board storage unit. It is 32 inches one way, 16 the other. It
can be used both horizontally (with TV on top) and vertically, since it has four
  helves, two in each direction.

It is very sturdy, and has held up for years. It is spray painted medium/dark
blue, and somewhat dinged up. But it is fully functional and very useful. I just
don't have the space for it now.

In Boulder Creek, near the Mountain Store. You must pick up.

I have a cheap LP motorcycle race stand free to a good home. It's a stand
for a double sided swingarm with universal adapters (i.e non bobbin
type). I have much better race stands now and this will go to the metal
recyclers if no one wants it.

We have a large cast iron woodstove manufactured by Washington Stove Works.
Also have matching chimney duct/pipe. Until recently, this stove was
operational in our home. Not sure but I think it is about 30 yrs old. A small
amount of rust, but otherwise in good shape.

Dimensions are approx 31" W x 43' D x 16" H

It is very heavy. You will need a truck or SUV and at least two strong people
to move it (plus I will help).
