Tom,thanks so much for the scenicruise run down. It sounds great! I have a
RT.66 neon clock I bought in Hackberry a few years back, kind of a neat place.
Back in 1975, when I started driving truck, the road from Kingman to Williams
was the road to go east. I remember my 72 freightliner with a de-tuned 8V71 T
holding up traffic climbing the hills in to Peach springs. I do hope some day
to cruise my cruiser 112 through RT 66 to Calif. I guess that would have been
considered the south west area covered by Grayhound which was cruiser 112,s old
stomping grounds. Glad you all had a great time, wish I could have been there
with you.

Tom, reading the last page of the article, looks like they left off mine (227) which was formerly M331. Wonder if it was simply a mistake, or if there is more to the story?

That is the old Motor Bus Society list. We have found several errors and omissions in that over the years. It's a good list, but not perfect.

Congrats. very nice article. well done.

If I remember correctly that 74 MCA used the old Motor Bus list that has been around for a very long time. No big deal, it's just sometimes you come across photos, etc. with fleet numbers that are not on the list anywhere. I know John Vickers took a photo back in 1964 of a Scenic, and we can't find that fleet number on any list. Obviously, it existed, but it is just not documented. I'm still trying to work up my roster for my website. These things are always a work in progress. Keep up the good work. Take care.

Thanks Tom,

As for the photos that dont match up, maybe those were cars that were transferred from one division to another after delivery?    Those buses carried so many different numbers during their careers.

Tom,

As for the Vickers photo, are you talking about the one where the Scenic's fleet # was 5331 and John's dad was in the picture with it?

Next time buddy. This won't be the last......we're just getting started ! Want to do a midwestern version maybe in two years. Going to plot all current owners on a map, then plot roadworthy runners, then plot likely attendees, then pick location based on this info. We hope this maximizes our attendance. Should be a highly scientific procedure....laugh..laugh !!We'll see.

Tom,
As for the Vickers photo, are you talking about the one where the Scenic's fleet # was 5331 and John's dad was in the picture with it?

Congrats. very nice article.

Take care.

If you are referring to the delivery list, I got that info from the Motor Coach Age May 1974 article.

Hi Tom,
Were willing to drive, and another year may have done CA, but it is our sons
last few weeks of high school, heading to University in August, so could not
leave with him doing finals, and need to keep some money in the bank to get him
set up when he leaves home. As you said, we will get together again at another
reunion sometime in the future.

you got home safe and sound. Sorry we didn't make it to cruise with you, but

Hi All. 847 is now tucked away at the RV park, and I’m home with a nice glass of wine. Life is good. J I thought I’d let everyone know the details of what happened.

On Sunday after leaving the Cracker Barrel where we all had lunch… ( A big Thank You to Frank Gonzales. ) we headed east on I-40 and then south on Az 93 towards Phoenix and I-17. Az 93 is a nice road but… it’s mostly 2 lane with lots of long steep hills to pull. 847 was struggling more than usual on the hills and I actually had to shift down to 2nd a couple of times. The folks behind me were not happy. Even got flipped off once. J At one point on a long slow hill she really bogged down very suddenly. Before I could get “Uh oh” out of my mouth I saw a big black cloud come out of the exhaust and she picked it back up again, such as it was. J I think that’s where the bearing totally failed. Right after that I started smelling hot brakes. I tapped mine and then seemed fine. We were now on a downhill and I figured it was a truck in front of me. The smell never really went away though. It wasn’t real strong, but it was there. We drove about another 20 miles to I-17 and I made a right turn onto the entrance ramp. When I made that turn, I think the entire left tag axle wheel assembly shifted towards the inside of the bus. The inside dual hit the frame and went flat and the axle stub blew out the end cap. That opened it up to the air and started a fire, with what oil was still there.

Almost immediately, someone pulled up beside me and got my attention and I pulled over on a wonderfully wide and brand new shoulder. By the time I got out and to the back, the fire went out but…. it was ugly!!

Luckily, my girlfriend Sherri’s daughter lives in Tempe. She came and picked us up and we went to the airport so I could rent a car. We then packed suitcases etc in the car and along with the two dogs, drove 200 miles to Sierra Vista, Az where she lives. She HAD to be back to work Monday morning. We got there about 2:30am, slept a few hours and then she headed to work and the dogs and I headed back to Phoenix. I burned up the cell phone all the way tracking down parts. Thanks to Sean Keating and Chad I had some part numbers. To make a long story a little shorter (I know… too late for that) by 3pm I was back at the bus and beating and striking. I called a tire service to come out to deal with the inside dual and get the lugs loose. I tried by hand but no good. The tire guy came and blew the tires off. While he worked on the flat I got the drum and hub off. Chad… I have to argue here with you on the 100 lb figure you threw at me. I know I was tired, and I’m somewhat of a weak pup but geezzzz. That was NOT 100 lbs!!! You know, Gravity is always working. It came off… but without the tire guy it wouldn’t have gotten back on!!

Anyway, This was not the first time this had happened to this bus. There a quite a bit of old damage. The inner race, or cup was actually cracked completely through on one side and the new one was not a press, or even tight fit. The outer race I had to beat out. The hub was really boggered up inside and all I had a was a large file. I tried to clean it up as best I could. The tire guy helped with installing the new outer race. I went in ok about half way, and then just stopped. We worked on it for a while and managed to get it square but it wouldn’t go in any further. It was in far enough so I could get the inner nut on but that was all the thread there was. It was starting to get dark and he had to go to another call. A Greyhound with a blown front tire, of all things. So we decided “Go for it!” SO rather than a nut, locking ring and then a lock nut, we only have one nut holding things together. I was little concerned because it’s not a left hand thread so if the bearing grabbed, it would unscrew the nut. Oh well… it is what it is. The one part I couldn’t find was the hubcap that had the center blown out of it. So I took a plastic drain pan and cut the center out of it. I cut bolt holes in it and sandwiched it between the hub and what was left of the original cover using silicon on both sides. Then I cut an “X” in it, forced the gear oil bottles cap through and but about ˝ a quart of gear oil in. Then silicon’d the “X” over.

The tire guy couldn’t come up with a 10X20 inner tube so, we dismounted the tire and I stowed it in the spare tire compartment. I then just mounted the wheel and put on the outer tire. I got finished just as it was getting dark. I decided to not try to drive at night and I still had the rental car to deal with. So I slept in the bus, (Sure wish I’d gotten the shower working before the trip) In the morning I went to a local Enterprise rental office and checked in the car and they drove me and the dogs back to the bus. She fired right up and I headed out…. Slowly in 3rd.

I stopped after a few miles to check things. Oil was holding and everything was nice and cool. The next leg I sped up a little and as soon as I cleared Phoenix traffic I stopped again to check. Again, holding oil and cool as the other hubs. From there I motored, uneventfully, to Benson, Az. I arrived about 2pm and hung out until Sherri got off of work. We then when to her house for….. a shower….. a nice dinner and …..wine. J This morning I aired her up and finished the last 130 miles home. No problems or issues at all.

To summarize…..

I never got around to checking the hub oil levels since I got the bus. My bad. I should have known better, and there isn’t an excuse but… it just wasn’t on the radar. It is now, and should be for everyone else. Go ahead… go check it now… I’ll wait. J This failure was coming since I left here on Friday I think. The way she drives and pulls hills now is very different than Friday or Saturday. These bearing have been eating themselves for a while.

My tool list has dramatically expanded after this. I had general hand tools, but nothing big. No big hammer, no big punch or chisel, no chain (to chain up the axle if needed) no 1” drive impact gun to get lug nuts off and no big pry bar or the like. I only had a 3/8 drive socket and the largest socket was what I needed to remove the end cap bolts. We need to be very self sufficient with that beauties. I’m thinking I need about everything I would need to do just short of an in-frame overhaul…. And that might not be a stretch. I’m lucky this happened as close to a major city as it did or I’d still be out there looking for parts. Does FedEx deliver to milepost markers? Ummmm….. I’ll have to ask.

I’m going to take it all apart again soon and do a full hub rebuild, on both sides, before the next trip. I’ll post a full parts list with part numbers etc soon. I left all the boxes in the bus today.

Thanks for everyone’s help, advice and support.

Jeff

Then I cut an “X” in it, forced the gear oil bottles cap through and but about ½ a quart of gear oil in.

5331 is one that I remember well. In fact, I think I may have ridden on it once.  5330-5335 were among those who came along my route between Birmingham and Athens Alabama.  It seems to me as though those were originally Eastern coaches.  My source of info would be the strayhound info.  It should be on there.  i will try to see if i can find it.

Congrats. very nice article.

Then I cut an “X” in it, forced the gear oil bottles cap through and but about ½ a quart of gear oil in.

Jeff,
