I have two shows lined up this month;
This coming Saturday and Sunday, November 14–15, 2009, the 21st Annual
Festive Craft Market at the NSAC, Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.
http://nsac.ca/athletics/craftmkt/index.asp
The following weekend, Friday - Sunday, November 20-22, 2009, the
Christmas Craft Expo at Acadia University in Wolfville. I have a few
customer appreciation tickets to give away, to save you the $5.00
admission fee. If you would like one or two, drop me an email with your
mailing address and I will pop them in the post.

Here is my schedule for the markets I will be at for the next eight weeks:
June 14 - Moncton
June 21 - Antigonish
June 28 - Antigonish
July 5 - Moncton
July 12 - Antigonish
July 19 - Moncton
July 26 - Moncton
August 2 - Antigonish
Moncton Market is open from 7am to 2pm, and Antigonish Farmer's Market
from 8am to noon. After August, the plan is that I will be rotating
alternate weekends. I have teamed up with Mary from Fibrepalooza
so that between us, we can commit to take a space at these markets on a
regular basis. This makes it easier for the market managers to assign a
permanent spot for us, while we get to go to different locations.
Pictou Weekend Market opens for the summer on 21 June and you can visit
my booth there on Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 5pm.

This Saturday, 19 April 2008, I am setting up my booth at Moncton
Market, my first ever show in New Brunswick. Parlez vous Englais, sil
vous plait!
It seems to be a very busy place, and I look forward to making lots of
new acquaintances there. The hours are 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. so it's
going to be an early start for me, considering that it is a two hour
drive. Please excuse me if I'm a bit bleary eyed if you drop by to see me.

This coming Saturday, December 22, will be your last chance to come
visit me at Antigonish Farmer's Market until it re-opens again next
spring. Dress warm though, because even with the space heaters it is
still very cold in the barn. Last Saturday moisture was freezing in the
roof space and falling as showers of tiny snow flakes. But even so
everyone was very cheerful and busy buying produce and gifts. One lady
turned up with a basket of kittens looking for new homes and it wasn't
long before they were all adopted. Not a bad way to get rid of kittens,
but it would have been better if the mother had been fixed before the
accident happened.
I have to say that I have been very pleased with both the way the market
is run, and the support shown to me by the people of Antigonish, and I
thank you all very much. It is very encouraging, and I will be looking
at ways to show my wares at other markets around the province next year.
The new market that is planned for Halifax looks very exciting in terms
of its "green" construction. I hope that one day I might be able to show
my work there. You will find a short video presentation outlining its
construction on my blog:

Last
weekend I started taking a booth at Antigonish Farmer's Market , and so
far it has been very successful. Here is a picture of my set-up this
weekend. The market is open for only three hours on a Saturday morning,
so I built some new displays which are fast to set up and easy to fit in
the car.
I have two craft shows coming up.
October 13/14, Hogmanay, in New Glasgow at North Nova Education Centre,
which is in support of their music program.
November 17/18, Festive Craft Market, Langille Athletic Centre,
Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.
I will be back at Antigonish on 20 and 27 of October, 9am- noon. I hope
to be able to join them in November and December, but they haven't
decided on a venue and there may not be space. So stay tuned news on that.
At other times I am usually in the studio and welcome visitors, but it
is best to contact me before travelling to arrange an appointment in
case I am out.

Caring for your spurtle or salad bowl is a simple case of washing it in
warm soapy water and drying thoroughly. An occasional application of oil
or wax may be called for, but for the most part timely washing will keep
your wooden kitchenware in good condition.
But if it takes on an odour such as garlic or onion, try rubbing it with
a slice of lemon, lime or orange, then sprinkle with salt and wipe with
a paper cloth.
In more extreme cases where food has gone off in the bowl, such as fruit
which has been forgotten, try making a mixture of mineral oil and pumice
powder. Rub this into the bowl with a cloth. Many applications may be
needed, but this is probably the safest way for consumers to fix a bowl.
I once had a customer come to me with an old bowl, not one of mine I
should add, that had had some fruit go off in it. The bottom was a
really sticky mess and I had to remove quite a bit of wood to get back
to a reasonably good finish. Sandpaper is not much use in cases like
this since it will gum up right away. I used a curved cabinet scraper,
but even then it was a tediously slow job.

Today I am able to offer someone the opportunity to
purchase a very unique weedpot. Essentially it is a three-sided pot,
each face having its own unique texture. It is made from a most unusual
piece of black ash and stands about seven inches tall.
Read more and see the pictures on the blog:

Don't forget that this is a unique piece, so why not treat yourself
today while it is still available!

The Pictou Weekend Craft Market has opened for the summer, and that is
where you will find me every Saturday and Sunday until September 24. It
is located on the Pictou waterfront in the curling club, just across
from the ship Hector, and is open from 10am to 5pm.
This year I have a slightly bigger booth and have set up a workbench
where I can spend time between customers doing some carving. At the
moment I am working on decorating a small oak bowl. It is a nice way to
pass the time between customers. I'm not very good at sitting around
with nothing to do.
So if you are in Pictou this summer, drop by and say hi.
My studio at Seafoam is open daily from Monday to Thursday, 10am - 5pm
as a minimum. I am usually open well before 10, and sometimes stay open
after 5, depending on what other chores and yard work needs doing.
Fridays are bit hit and miss. This is the day I might shut up shop
altogether if I have to go out, but I hope that won't happen too often
and that the studio will be open as much as possible. If you want to
call ahead the number is 902 351 3886 or toll free 1 888 428 3794.

Salad bowls are something I only make when I have access to suitably
large pieces of green wood. Unlike some of the bowls you will find in
stores, these are made from one solid piece of wood. Hauling and
handling the raw material is no easy matter, and not something I am
really geared up to do on a regular basis. So I don't always have salad
bowls for sale, and when I do they usually sell quickly from my gallery
during the summer and fall. So they don't usually make it to the website.
This year I actually have some salad bowls ready early. So, for all my
on-line customers I am going to make them available on my blog,
http://chipshop.blogspot.com. It's easier to post them here than on the
website. So for the next few weeks watch out for 'Salad bowl Sunday'!
Here is this week's offering:
http://chipshop.blogspot.com/2006/03/salad-bowl-sunday.html
It is turned from maple and finished with walnut oil, a kitchen-safe oil
which is non-toxic and easy to maintain with further applications of oil
or beeswax as needed. The rim pattern has been handcarved with a gouge.
The internal dimensions of this bowl are 12.5" diameter by 4.8" deep.
Externally it is 13.7" by 5.7".
It is currently available and costs CDN $165.00

I recently completed a new piece of work that I am really quite excited
about.
It is a set of three weedpots, turned from the same piece of wood on
five different axes. At first glance the faces of the weedpots seem to
be decorated with random carving, but when they are properly arranged a
single circular design can be seen. When the weedpots are rotated, you
will find that there are four such designs to look at.
One of the things I really like about 'Triplets I" is the way the
surfaces of each weedpot meet at the corners. It makes for some really
interesting shapes.

sculptural woodturning.

Every summer I get calls from people who have visited my studio during
their vacation. They either wished they had bought a particular piece of
work, or that they had bought more items to take home as gifts.
This yellow birch bowl is just one example of an item that I have mailed
this summer:
{see my blog post at
http://chipshop.blogspot.com/2005/09/telephone-orders.html}
I got a lovely notecard from it's new owners in Pennsylvania to tell me
that it had arrived safely. It was much admired by all their family and
is destined to become a family heirloom. Feedback like that is always so
nice to receive, especially for unique pieces like this that I am so
fond of myself and really wish I didn't have to sell. I find it
reassuring to know that it has gone to a good home.
I currently have an order for a small salad bowl. The lady had seen
something she liked in my booth at the craft market, but didn't buy it
at the time. Whichever bowl it was, I don't have it any longer, but I do
have some roughed out blanks that are ready for finishing, so I will be
starting that job next week. When they are finished I will send some
pictures by e-mail for her to choose from.
While it is often possible for me to fulfill requests like this, very
often truly unique pieces cannot be replicated if they are already sold.
So if you do visit my studio and see something you like, do remember
that it may not be available for very long. A lot of my work never makes
it to the website.
But if you do need to purchase something that isn't on the website, you
can call me toll-free on 1-888-428-3794, or email

Next Saturday, July 31, I am having an open house at the studio. Tours
begin on the hour, every hour, and visitors will be able to see how a

involved in making a bottle stopper.
So if you are in the vicinity of Seafoam, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, do
drop by and visit. As an added bonus we are giving a 10% discount on all
purchases made in the gallery that day.

Wedding Favors ~ Artisan Crafted Gifts ~ One-of-a-Kind Woodturning
I just wanted to take a moment of your time to explain what is
happening
with my woodturning business. I am in the process of changing the
business name from Sunrise Woodcrafts to Seafoam Woodturning
Studio,
hence the notice you should have received from Yahoo! Groups that
I had
changed the name of this newsletter.
You will no doubt be wondering why I would take such a drastic
step.
Well, its purely a marketing decision. When I started Sunrise
Woodcrafts
back in 1995, I planned on having to do more than just
woodturning to
make a living. As things turned out (no pun intended) that hasn't
happened. All I do now is woodturning. No more carving. No more
joinery.
So I decided it is time for a change. The new name has been
choosen to
give a clearer idea of what the business is all about, and where
it is
located. This was primarily driven by my tourist market, but I
think in
the long term it will benefit my internet market too. I am
currently
working on a new website, seafoamwoodturning.com which should be
open
for business early in the new year. I will be sure to announce
when it is
ready, but in the meantime may I wish you all the very best for
the
holiday season.

THE WOODTURNING YEAR
2002 has been another busy year for me, and explains why this is only
the second newsletter I have sent. The bottle stopper wedding favors
have proved to be a popular gift for brides looking for something
unique, personalized and handcrafted. They are also perfect for a wine
themed wedding, or one held in a vineyard.
There were lots of visitors to the studio this summer, and the tourist
season extended well into October. The craft show season is has been
going well, and I am doing my last show this weekend, at the Nova Scotia
Agricultural College in Truro.

WOODTURNING COURSES
Last summer I was overwhelmed by the response to my
woodturning courses. Thanks to my website I had clients
from as far away as Texas come and learn the basics of
the craft. Many brought family or friends and the
turning course became a part of their vacation. In
recent years woodturning has become a very popular
hobby. It is a wonderful way to express your creative
potential, and once mastered it is quite possible to
turn a work of art in a matter of hours. So why not
book a course today? I have recently updated the
website to provide information about travel and
accommodation
(http://www.sunrisewoodcrafts.ns.ca/woodturning-school.html)
and added a schedule and prices
(http://www.sunrisewoodcrafts.ns.ca/woodturning-class.html).
TAKE A VACATION
Have you planned your summer vacation yet? If not, why
not come and visit Nova Scotia this year? Be sure to
visit the Sunrise Trail (http://www.sunrisetrail.ca)
and stop by my studio.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SUNRISE WOODCRAFTS
During the winter months I get a bit of a break from
the production turning and teaching which takes so much
of my time during the rest of the year. I can relax a
little, work on my websites and take a more creative
approach to my turning - when I'm not shoveling snow
that is! I have been thinking about making some wall
sculptures and have a few sketches and ideas ready to
take to the workshop. Also on the drawing board are
some ideas for turned brooches and a new design of
letter opener. I expect to have something more concrete
to show you in the next edition of this newsletter.
Last year I started making some small bowls which I
call Bits'n'Bobs bowls, the ideal place to keep keys,
coins, jewelry and the like. I am now working on Snack
bowls - just the thing for individual servings of
peanuts or pretzels while you watch TV. These should
both be available on the website in the next month or
so.
I hope that you have enjoyed this short newsletter. If
you have any comments or questions, please e-mail me -
mailto:derek@...
I look forward to hearing from you.
