SoftEOT and SoftDPU are software applications that decode two radio telemetry protocols widely used on North American railroads. The SoftEOT Yahoo! Group is a venue for distribution, support and discussion of the applications.

SoftEOT decodes the transmissions of End-of-Train (EOT) and Head-of-Train (HOT) devices. These devices perform a safety-oriented function by allowing the crew to monitor vital parameters at the rear of a freight train. The data that they transmit, when viewed in SoftEOT, allows observation of the braking activity, motion status and other information.

SoftDPU decodes the communication of Distributed Power Units (DPUs). DPUs are unmanned helper locomotives positioned in the middle or at the rear of freight trains and controlled from the lead locomotive via radio link. Monitoring the data exchanged by the lead and remote units offers detailed insight into the operation of the train.

SoftEOT and SoftDPU were developed for the enjoyment of railroad enthusiasts and to further users' interest in and understanding of locomotive technology and operation.

Both applications are freeware and run on Windows. The only required external hardware is a radio that receives on the 450 MHz band. The output of the radio is acquired through the computer's audio device.

SoftEOT and SoftDPU only support receiving. They do not generate signals for transmission and pose no risk of interfering with railroad operations. Additionally, EOT, HOT and DPU communication carries no sensitive information that could aid a person of ill intent.
