SOURCERER'S APPRENTICE
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000
_______________________________________________

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

This issue should arrive on your doorstep on Labor Day, one of the
few days most Americans celebrate by leaving early on the previous
Friday for an extended weekend of bumper-to-bumper gridlock,
overbooked hotels, cancelled or delayed flights, and lots of fast
food.

Me, on the other hand, has been methodically compiling this month's
newsletter since about 3:00 this morning and expect to eventually
post this to the eGroups site around primetime tonight. But, its been
in air-conditioned bliss, surrounded by four walls and no windows,
with the kids and the missus out shopping with my parents who have
roosted on our new doorstep for a very nice week.

This issue is big, like in lots of information. Some of you like big,
others like small, while others don't care just so long as the
information is good, useful, and helps you in your recruiting and
sourcing. If you opt for the abbreviated, than I highly recommend
that you peruse the reviews on CareerMagic.com, StaffBots.com,
dtSearch.com, and TracerLock.

The Secret to Finding Well-Trained HighTech Professionals

Often the methodology that is used in discovering bright college
graduates is forgotten when it comes to technical or trade schools.
However, the same identification process works fine. Try writing a
letter to the school, include a sizzling description of your company,
your culture, your challenging opportunities, etc., etc. and ask them
to keep you on their distribution list of recently graduating
students. Here is one source of schools to begin with.

A Really Good & Free Search Agent

TracerLock is a free service that monitors the Web for sites matching
your interests, and sends you email when it finds a new match. All
user information is kept strictly confidential, and is entirely
advertiser-supported, so all features are free.

SearchToHelp

They say that kids are apathetic today. Too much television and too
little human contact has made them cold to the needs of others, and
the Internet is only exacerbating the problem. Andriy Mishchenko, a
16-year old Web designer in Toronto, begs to differ. SearchToHelp is
his result, a search engine using a combination of AltaVista and
Google's technology, wrapped into one big giving-back machine. Every
time someone uses the search engine, three cents are contributed to a
charity. If that user also clicks on ad banners, another quarter is
added to the donation. Where does the money go? The users decide.
Each month they vote on which charities they'd like their
contributions to go to. It sorta gives you warm fuzzies all over.

Finding College Resumes Just Got Easier

Google's University Search enables you to narrow your search to a

Psst, Buddy - Wanna Buy a Mailing List?

Yahoo, eBay, and the little known Market Logistics Group (MLG) have
become the latest companies to dance in the tide of public privacy
concerns. MLG tried to auction a mailing list of 200,000 American
investors on both eBay and Yahoo. eBay refused to host the mailing
list auction and closed down both of MLG's attempts, while Yahoo
removed the offer there after three days. The selling of such lists
is an established industry that has translated successfully to Web
- this time, it was just a little too blatant. MLG will try it again
with AskAD.com, an auction site in beta. CNet has the story and
DMNews, a follow-up.

Of the approximately 7,000 InfoWorld subscribers who received a
broadcast e-mail on February 15, inviting them to participate in the

Making a Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear

As dot-coms fall ever faster, this site helps you keep up with the

I Need a Web Developer

An early first question to this request could be what scripting
language do you use on your corporate web site. Once known, and there
are only about a half dozen leading sources, one can easily target
the product manufacturer, focused usergroups or associations, or just
chat it up with several thousand special interest groups.

Blogging Paper

If you run a journal section on your site, you know hoe tedious
updating it can be. You don't want to have stale thoughts displayed
on your page, but it's such a drag to find the time to sit down and
write, then save it, then code it into your page, then upload it.
What's worse, sometimes you end up thinking up something great while
you're in a meeting or on the subway, and the series of thoughts
completely escapes your brain by the time you can FTP your idea to
the Web. Meet Blogger, a free Web-based tool that allows you to post
from any browser (including wireless), in any location, instantly to
your site. You set up everything once, providing a template and the
FTP information, and then your blogs (short for "weblogs") get on the
Web with the click of a single button.

Domain Searching For Dummies

The days of whois, nslookup, dig, host, and traceroute are winding
down. Anyone wanting to troubleshoot or learn more of the Net once
needed these semi-obscure commands, but now you can use a Web site.
Amnesi lets you find out all of the details about a particular domain
with a click. If you don't remember a name you heard on the radio or
saw on TV, you can give Amnesi your best guess and it will try
possible alternatives. A system's connectivity can be qualified with
the traceroute interface from sites around the world. The global
nature of the Net becomes clear when you see how fast you can be
reached from Florida, yet so slowly from Australia. Those who
download their Web site's log files can resolve the raw IP addresses
in those logs by doing a reverse IP lookup. Offered a number like
12.34.5.67, Amnesi will give you back the actual name for that
system. Combined, these utilities can let casual queries be quick and
easy.

Getting Candidate Resumes for Peanuts

A major study conducted in 1999 by a well-known research group
determined that it cost the average employer over seven dollars to
collect one resume. This was measured from the initial identification
and write up of a need, the ensuing advertising, to the eventual
delivery or arrival of the resume. However, the key point unsaid or
not measured was what percentage of those received hit the mark at
least 50% or better. Major job portals like Monster.com spend
millions to attract job seekers, and their costs are stratospheric
and they too don't deliver consistent winners. How about a unique
resume sourcing service that is not contingency based and costs so
little you wonder how they make any money?
http://netrecruiter.net/sourcing.html

Opting Out of Faxes

It's amazing the laws and prevention tools now available to suppress
unwanted and unsolicited emails. Ever try to figure out how to stop
those same unwanted faxes? I could easily list some of the top ten
flagrant violators of this venue in the recruiting industry, but
here's a site that may make you more of a tolerated faxer, as well as
the opportunity to get off some of these prolific faxers.

CAREER PORTAL REVIEW

It's not often that anyone gets a chance to meet and discuss at
length, with both the President and the CEO, the merits and
suggestions one has about a career portal site. Fortunately, I happen
to live in a mecca of HR/recruiting software developers,
associations, and career sites. One such site, which was also one of
the early pioneers in non-web-based resume capture and delivery
services, is better known today as CareerMagic.com. Those who
remember its early acronym of CMB, knew it to be the only game in
town when it opened its doors in 1994.

For employers, CareerMagic.com offers cost-effective and efficient
recruiting solutions, including real-time job postings, complete
company profiles and resume screening, routing and searching of their
comprehensive resume database of more than 150,000 resumes.
Additionally, they offer resume private label functionality for
companies who want a full function career site of their own. Other
features include their MagicPost Job Wrapping service which
automatically spiders jobs from any company URL, and posts the jobs
to CareerMagic.com. In addition, their BroadcastMagic Cross-Posting
Service will send your jobs to over 30 other career sites. No other
career related website offers as much functionality. If only I had
three hands, I could give this site 3 thumbs up!

SOFTWARE

Searching Far and Wide

One of my favorite tools, that I talk about in any presentation or
training class, is dtSearch. Recently, this Bethesda, MD based
software developer released their much vaunted beta version 6.0. Its
last update or "build" occurred only a few days ago on August 30.
Among the many new features, some of the most notable include the
ability to create automatic index updates that can be scheduled; the
ability to index other people's web sites, even handling dynamically
created links (pages that were built for the requested search and
static pages); the ability to maintain your in-house jargon as it
pertains to a job description, but use search words that are in the
real world; and a lot, lot more.
http://www.dtsearch.com/ftp_pub/dts600t.exe

The Epitome of Spider Searching

Once you use Lonny's Staffbots site you may never go anywhere else to
find your resumes, pay exorbitant prices to other psuedo-search
sites, or even have to pony up hundreds of dollars to attend training
on how to perform web-based resume searches. This site also offers a
free 14-day trial and when that is up you will be "very" surprised by
the monthly cost!
http://www.staffbots.com/

A Great Free Autoresponder

Set up your e-mail software to automatically respond to incoming
messages using definable filters. Send out your scheduled mailings.
Accept registrations to your news letters and mailings. Send out your
scheduled Newsletters and/or mailings. Scheduled group mailings with
unlimited follow up messages. Filter out messages that you consider
to be Spam and delete them directly from your POP server and/or send
back a polite reply to be removed from the mailing list. Reply once
to mail from a certain person and then never again. Reply to a
specific person with a specific reply. Do a one time or scheduled
group mailing. Filter out important mail and forward then to a low
traffic email id. Manage an unlimited amount of mailing lists. Put a
form on your website (just like on this page) and automatically add
people to a specific mailing list and send back a reply. No need for
CGI. Put a form on your website and collect all data into a database
using the form handlers. Trap notification failure messages and
automatically add offending email id's to the blacklist. Deal with
mail sent to different accounts and reply differently depending on
who it was sent to. The free beta version text allows PS
Autoresponder to display banner adds on the replies, mailings and
newsletters sent out.
http://www.autoreplying.com/beta.htm

A Clean Page Is A Faster Page - A Gift For Your In-House Programmers

Here is a Windows and Macintosh utility that removes unneeded code
from most of the graphics and text files used to build web pages.
Reductions vary depending on file type, with multimedia files
dramatically reduced in size and text files reduced typically 8-12%.
Anything that makes web files smaller is good, and this software is
very good. Its best feature is that is does no harm. That's vital,
since removing necessary code is the worst possible thing it could
do. It's a worthwhile addition to the savvy Web creator's arsenal.

HARDWARE

Security at a Single Touch

As a mobile computer user, convenience and security are two of your
primary concerns. The Ethenticator's unique ability to grant access

passwords makes it a lifesaver while you're on the road with a
thousand other things on your mind. Its secure access features put
your mind at ease, too, with reliable protection from unauthorized
use and data theft. And the best part, it only costs $199!

SEARCH TIPS OF THE MONTH

Glenn Gutmacher, President of Recruiting-Online.com offer theses new
tricks in locating top-notch talent.

1) Find user groups (those online enclaves where people who have a
certain software or hardware tool in common, share tips) and
2) Find exhibitor kits on the Web for industry conferences/events so
you can find names of panelists/speakers/presenters, their companies,
job titles and other keywords.

--------

Exploit a seldom used technique for extracting e-mail addresses from
mailing lists. Send a message to the following list
(majordomo@...) with this command in the message area
(which @). Leave the subject area blank. This command only works with
majordomo mailing lists.

About Internet Security

Hideaway.net, a Net security content and service provider, would like
to sell you their services. To entice you into buying, it offers a
useful site on Windows 98 security (a subject big enough to warrant
its own section), server security, anti-virus software and issues,
and all manner of privacy software and issues. The up-to-date content
lets you find relevant material easily. As broadband Net access
proliferates, security issues increase dramatically in importance.
Drop in here, educate yourself, and just maybe save yourself a great
deal of grief down the road.

Compare Domain Registrars

The 1849 California Gold Rush brought forth the same blinding greed.
All and sundry are storming the gates of the Internet's many domain
name registrars to get every possible variant of their favorite word
or phrase as used in a domain name. RegSelect wants to help those
treasure seekers budget their exploration properly. Given the many
choices of registrars - more than 50 have been approved - it can be
more difficult than one might expect to find the right deal. Couple
to that the reality that of the ten or 20 domains registered by a
single person, perhaps two will prove to be useful or valuable; the
rest will establish themselves as nothing more than nuggets of fool's
gold untouched.
http://www.regselect.com/

The LIST of Domain Name Registrars

The previous tidbit wouldn't be complete without telling you about
all the domain registrar providers as well. It seems that anyone can
be a domain name registrar these days and take your money for
providing you a domain name. There are enough protections in place so
that you don't have to worry about spending your money for a name
someone else already owns. You should be looking at cost (the US
registrars here charge $10-35 per year for essentially the same end
result; foreign prices are often much higher) and service (how hard
is it to register, renew, and, most important, change your
registration data). There are big differences in the levels of
service, not directly tied to price. This site list an incredible 130
or so (remember, there was only one not that long ago) registration
services worldwide. It offers price comparisons for 13 US registrars
and a wealth of information about the whole process. A visit here
should result in lower costs when you buy your first or more domain
names.
http://www.newregistrars.com/registrars.html

A Vital Service for Those Glued to Their Monitors

You spend all day staring at your screens. But what would you do if a
storm was bearing down on your office? You'd never hear the emergency
sirens over your PC's sound system. You need the Emergency Email
Network. If e-mail rules your life, you need to join it. A simple
sign-up at this non-profit site can bring you all sorts of data,
ranging from regular weather reports to severe weather alerts and
warnings. If your local utilities join (more do regularly), you can
also receive outage reports from them.
