People always ask me why I spend so much time compiling this
newsletter. The answer is simple. I am lousy at keeping meticulous
notes and records and therefore, I use this newsletter as my
secretary for the month. It reflects all the new toys or gadgets or
sites that I have tried, liked, or quickly forgotten. Much of what
you see here is employed every day in our sourcing business. One of
my favorite freeware tools, which I am just now mentioning in this
issue, is called Web2Text. It basically and very quickly converts
multiple files or directories from HTML to text files. Then, with
another freeware tool called BK Replacem, previously reviewed in an
earlier newsletter, you can perform an exhaustive search and replace
of multiple conditions on a text file, performing this feat against
an entire directory of files. This cleaning up is especially useful
since many companies regularly pull down resumes from their
subscribed fee-based job boards.

I'd also like to take this time to ask any of you who subscribe to
suggest any new sites, software, articles, etc. that you feel would
prove useful to your fellow recruiters and researchers.

Ahoy Mates

This is a free World Wide Web service designed to help you find the
home pages of individual people on the Web. Ahoy! relies primarily on
the Metacrawler to create a large list of web pages, some of which
may be close to the target page. Ahoy! then uses a technique
called "Dynamic Reference Sifting" to weed out the least promising
pages, leaving you with a manageable number of choices. The effect of
this "sifting" is that your search can proceed more quickly.

Builder-Find.com seeks to match Web contractors - developers,
programmers, and graphic designers - with potential employers.
Employers submit job offers. Builders submit bids. The site claims
that "within hours you'll be receiving bids in your e-mail."

Site Snagger

Wouldn't it be nice if you could read all the content on your
favorite web sites at your leisure, and store it someplace safe until
you're finished? SiteSnagger is the perfect utility for "snagging"
and saving to your hard disk all or part of the web site(s) you're
interested in, from text to multimedia files. Site Snagger organizes
your saved material into "projects" that are displayed in tree format
for convenient access when you want to browse. It also creates a
Table of Contents for each project, listing links to each page you've
saved from a site, like a list of bookmarks for when you go back
online. So catch up on your reading via laptop while commuting in the
company car pool... or just save yourself the headache of slow
connections at peak hours.

ResumeGrabber

Here is a fast way to transfer an address from a resume in a Web page
or email letter to ACT! or GoldMine. Running in your system tray, it
intelligently extracts the address data from the resume, separates
data fields, and enters them into the appropriate fields in your
contact manager. Resumes can be sent as an attachment or entered as
notes into your PIM. Reference letters, job orders, and emails can
also be attached to any contact. Just highlight the address and click
on the ResumeGrabber tray icon. The resume is automatically
transferred to your address book. The program's interface is clean,
and several options are provided.

SearchRocket

A free desktop tool that serves as your personal Internet search
agent. It's lightning-fast, compact, and very easy to use but isn't
as robust (or complex) as some similar offerings we've seen. Enter
your search phrase and click your mouse to send the search to seven
major search engines and Amazon.com.

ZoneAlarm

Here is an easy-to-use Internet security utility that sets up a
personal firewall that's particularly well suited to DSL and cable
modem users. Computers with such an always-on connection have a
permanent IP address, making them especially vulnerable to
information theft and other attacks. ZoneAlarm lets you select one of
three security levels to separately apply to local and Internet
traffic.

by e-mail and you download later at high speed.

attempts to create a text file that retains some of the layout of the
web page being converted. Most other converters merely remove HTML
tags, which can leave you with a total mess, and lots more work to

URL Address Book

This is a powerful Web address information manager. Featuring a clean-
looking hierarchical folder-type interface, it can sit on your
desktop (docked to either side or floating) or in your system tray
while you surf the Web, ready for you to drag and drop links to and
from your browser. Use it to store user IDs, passwords, email
addresses, and comments, as well as to associate local files (such as
a different browser) to each link saved.

Major Submit

A versatile website-submission application that allows you to submit
as many URLs as you like to some of the major Web search engines.
Just enter your name, email address, and your list of URLs. You can
then selectively send the submissions to AltaVista, Excite, HotBot,
InfoSeek, Lycos, Magellan, Northern Light, Planet Search, and Web
Crawler. Once the submission is complete, you can view an HTML
results log. If an attempt is unsuccessful, the search engine's
response page is downloaded and available for viewing.

Home Improvement

At some point, even the most reluctant homeowner has to become a do-
it-yourselfer, and so there's a large potential audience for
HomeProject.Com, which warns you on its splash page that it's
optimized for fast connections. The FAQ provides a good overview for
visitors who may wonder what the site wants to sell. Another good
place to start is the First-Time Users area, which contains three 1.3-
MB Windows applications for download: Garden Designer, Room Designer,
and Room Layout. Constructive thinkers who register can save projects
they create with these 3-D apps, collaborate with fellow home
improvers, and use other HomeProject.Com services. The My Projects
area lets you save projects and get advice. There are also home-
safety articles, a How-To Library (which covers carpentry,
electricity, painting, and other topics), and a tools library to help
