SOURCERER'S APPRENTICE
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000
_______________________________________________

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

I always promise myself that the next issue will be shorter. However,
that altruistic notion often seems like a pipe dream. This issue has
a lot of freebies for recruiters. I'm not sure why everyone is being
so benevolent - maybe it's the approaching holidays.

I would also like to thank everyone who offered suggestions on how to
both improve recruiting and retention in the armed services. After
posting my request to both subscribers of this newsletter, as well as
both active duty, retirees, reservists, and civilians working in the
military, no one could have prepared me for the deluge of information
and very constructive and insightful suggestions and opinions. As of
this printing, I have received over 8,000 replies. However, because
of the volume, I elected to condense the responses to approximately
250 and provide this information to you and to all those who
corresponded. Expect to see another posting this month on these
replies. It should prove very valuable to any HR professional seeking
clues to improving recruitment and retention.

Before you race ahead to read the contents of this newsletter, let me
wish each and every one of you a most joyous holiday season.

putting data-driven business operations on the Web. Their flagship

TIPS OF THE MONTH

Disguise Your E-mail Address JavaScript Have you ever gotten spam
email? Usually they get your name off of guestbooks, websites, etc...
because of mailto:Emailaddress@... links... But with this
script spammers can't get your email address off of the website this
script is on, because this generates the link in javascript, not
HTML!

Here's an example of the link generated: Username@... Looks
like a link, right? It is, but it is put together by putting
javascript variables together, and spammer tools cannot detect
javascript links. If you look at the source you will see and
understand how it is put together.

Script Code:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript"> // Change these variables to your
email address // Do NOT change the name of them! name="Username"
at="@" domain="something.com" // Do NOT edit below this line! // It
will mess up the script! document.write("<A
HREF='mailto:"+name+""+at+""+domain+"'>"+name+""+at+""+domain+"</a>")
</script>

There's good news and bad news about the Internet. You can go
everywhere you want, anytime you want to. But you're not going there
alone. Your computer keeps a history log, and the places you visit
keep a little piece of you. So whenever you surf the Net, your path
is marked and mapped. If you want to protect your privacy, follow a
few easy steps to cover your Internet tracks.

The file is called cookies.txt and normally resides off your local
harddrive in the C:\Program Files subdirectory. Look for either a
Netscape or Internet Explorer subdirectory. The initial format may
look the example below. In most cases, there is a lot more
information after these three lines. The secret to maintaining your
future privacy is to retrieve this file in your wordprocessor and
delete all the information below these three lines. Then resave the
file in ASCII or text format. Make sure that either Netscape or
Internet Explorer is not active before you edit and save this file.
One last step is to set the properties for the cookies.txt file as
Read Only. This way, the file will never again collect personal
information about you that can be used by others.

ODDS & ENDS

As widely reported in the press, the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has finally agreed to create
several new top level domains. ICANN blessed .biz, .pro, .aero,
.info, .name, .museum, and .coop. The only surprise in the widely
anticipated move was the lack of approval for several domains which
seemed to enjoy consensus support in the user community. Many people
thought ICANN would approve .web, .kids, and .xxx. Here's the text of
the ICANN resolution, and some background from Wired.
Resolution:
