SOURCERER'S APPRENTICE
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000
_______________________________________________

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

Do you get a lot of unsolicited email? I do. I guess it's inevitable
when you do as much surfing as I do each week. What I especially love
are all those "get rich quick" ads, the snake oil cures, and the
"find anything about anyone" software programs. But my number one
favorite is the "instant degree of my choice" offerings. In this
month's issue, I've conducted over 20 hours of research on scam
universities (http://netrecruiter.net/sa/2001/02/scamuniv.doc),
including many articles written about them, bogus university
websites, and a slew of jobseekers, both at the pinnacle of
management and below, who list these universities and their degrees
"earned" on their resume. I hope no one is offended by my decision to
post the name and if possible contact information of the jobseeker.
Something about fabricating one's credentials for personal gain
clouded my sensibilities.

Most of you probably only know me by this newsletter or maybe by
classes or conferences where I have presented the subject of Cutting
Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter. A funny encounter occurred
last year at the Computerworld conference in Orlando. While looking
for a blender to mix my liquid protein diet, I stumbled across Gerry
Crispin, co-author of CareerXRoads, sitting at the bar chatting with
Mark Williams, COO of ITCareers.com. In the ensuing conversation,
Gerry remarked that he finally figured out, after more than a year,
what I did for a living. I laughed and joked that maybe he finally
"looked" at my site, versus just hearing who I was from other people
he met. So, I invite all my subscribers to also look at my site at
netrecruiter.net and maybe you too will finally know what puts butter
on my bread!

REVIEWS

FlipDog.com lists jobs from employer Web sites. Using breakthrough
technology, they claim to get jobs from five times more employers
each week than other job sources do in a year. They also claim to have
more jobs than Monster and HotJobs combined. If using Netscape, you
will probably need to download and save this file and then open it in
MS Word.

HotResumes.com claims to be one of the fastest growing resume
databases on the internet. Their search team searches the net's free
resume databases (large, small, specialty, niche and general) plus
resume news groups and indexing 1000's monthly into our database for
you to search. If using Netscape, you will probably need to download
and save this file and then open it in MS Word.

SITES

A follow-up auto responder is an autoresponder that not only sends a
document automatically to a request but also sends message follow-ups
out at predetermined times. For example if you send an e-mail to a
follow-up responder you will automatically receive your information
in your mailbox but that is just the beginning of the process. Soon
you will receive another message (when depends on how the owner has
set their responders) maybe the next day asking you if you received
your information, what you thought of it, etc. A few days later you
may receive another message this time with another message and more
information. This can continue for the next couple weeks, months,
etc. The true power of this system is that the e-mail seems to come
from your email address as if it was actually written that day.
However it is the autoresponder silently doing it's job following up
on e-mail automatically. For a much better example of a follow-up
autoresponder in action send an e-mail to
nationwidejobopportunities@... and check your e-mail.
Imagine the time you could save and the increase in jobseeker
prospects you could generate if you could repeatedly and consistently
follow-up on all your leads automatically!

SOFTWARE

I wish I could easily schedule meetings with large numbers of people
- the meeting host invites people to the meeting and indicates which
time slots are preferable through a graphical interface. Additional
files may also be posted. Each participant then enters his or her
availability in a similar fashion. The host can send reminder emails
if participants forget to respond with their availability. Once
everyone has entered his or her schedule, an email will automatically
be sent to the host. The host can then view everyone's combined
schedule in color using several different filters. Finally, the host
selects a time slot and an email is sent out to the participants.

WebWader is a tool to automatically and thoroughly browse a Web site.
First it scans pages stored in the site, building a tree of HTML
pages. This tree is then traversed automatically and each page is
displayed by a browser. WebWader is especially useful for webmasters
who want to redesign a site with a complex hierarchy of files. The
program is neither a browser nor a link checker, but an 'aspect
checker:' it travels through a tree of HTML pages and displays each
one in a window, allowing for quick changes in the page's appearance.
It works with: Netscape, IExplorer, Opera, Emacs (Win32)

TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

Playing Musical Chairs With Your Search Commands
There are so many formulas out there for finding prospective resumes.
Here are some sample searches I conducted on four web-based search
engines: AltaVista, NorthernLight, HotBot, and NBCi. If using
Netscape, you will probably need to download and save this file and
then open it in MS Word.

How to Search a Resume Database - do you know how to effectively use
resume databases? Are you unable to create intelligent searches,
because you usually look for what you need instead of how a candidate
would place their skills on their resume? Here are a few pointers.

ODDS & ENDS

Building Technology
Anyone in the building trade will appreciate this resource, which
offers a huge amount of trade-related information for the practical
side of building, as well as advanced techniques for integrating
technologies into various structures. Even outsiders can enjoy it. We
learned more than we ever thought possible about water-loop heat
pumps, got hopelessly lost in the not-as-exciting-as-it-sounds
Earthquake Friction Dampers page, and hovered helplessly in the Wind
Energy Systems section, entranced by the enormous horizontal axis
wind turbines.

How to Write Online
Emily Vander Veer's writing site is relatively new, which means that
Writing for the Web is one of the few newsletter sites for "real"
writers that hasn't been purchased by an electronic publisher yet.
Vander Veer, an accomplished freelancer, provides on her pages advice
that comes from experience. For writers who write for a living, and
who care about things like electronic rights, hers is an important
voice. The site and accompanying free newsletter mark a path through
the still confusing and new world of Internet publication. While the
guides to paying e-markets, lists of writer's resources, and tips for
online self-promotion can help a good freelancer get the job done,
they also reinforce an underlying and pervasive message: a writer who
gives away work devalues every writer's work.

Baen Free Library Offers Free Books
One day SF author Eric Flint got into a virtual brawl with a number
of his peers over online piracy of copyrighted works and what to do
about it. One school of thought holds that the problem is best
handled with the "handcuffs and brass knucks" of tougher law
enforcement and technological fixes. Eric, on the other hand, feels
that online piracy is at most a nuisance, and that any losses it
causes are almost certainly offset by the additional publicity which
free book copies usually engender. His publisher, the extremely
experienced Jim Baen, told Eric to put his money where his mouth is
and make his own books available for free. Eric obliged, and after
some reflection so did a number of other prominent authors in the
Baen Books stable. And so we are blessed with the Baen Free Library,
where Eric Flint, David Drake, David Weber, and other top selling SF
authors offer some of their books for free: unabridged, no strings
attached, and with the full blessing of their publisher. Visit the
library if for no other reason than to read Eric's lucid take on the
whole issue of content piracy. While you're there, download the books
in several popular electronic formats.
