SOURCERER'S APPRENTICE
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000
_______________________________________________

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

I didn't realize how intriguing the review on distance learning
"institutions" was, but based on your overwhelming feedback it must
have struck a chord. My thanks goes out to Gerry Crispin and Mark
Mehler, who in their new printing release of CareerXRoads 2001, for
drawing attention to this newsletter and its "quirky resources." I
also want to mention that I'm introducing, beginning this month and
continuing through the remainder of this year, my favorite top ten
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter. The first in this new
review series is Resume infoFinder Platinum by Infogist.com. On the
conference side I'm sad to say that I was unable to attend the first
and instantly successful ERExpo in San Diego this month. Dave
Manaster and his once fledgling ERExchange website has come a long
way in a short time with great contributions by renowned experts in
our industry and a very popular and moderated forum discussion. My
yearly pilgrimage to Computerworld's Recruitment and Retention
Conference is just a few months away in early June and I'm already
chomping at the bit to give everyone attending a really good taste of
my 2001 tools in a special and free 4-hour Sunday pre-conference
warmup.

CUTTING EDGE TOOLS FOR THE INTERNET RECRUITER

In the first installment of this new topic to the SOURCERER'S
APPRENTICE, my first and undoubtedly one of my favorites in the war
for talent and the leveraging of time and resources for the recruiter
is Resume infoFinder Platinum by Infogist.com. This flagship
application is not even mentioned on the company site. But after a
few peeks at its incredible arsenal of resume capture and
communication tools, you will quickly be a believer for life. This
amazing product evolved from a small group of geeky programmers who
specialized in developing intelligent applications that simplified
the finding and reading online of information. Lucky for us, they
also chose to target the resume market. For those of you in the hunt
for a new job in the HR industry, they also offer a great free job
metasearcher entitled, HR Jobs infoFinder. This program can instantly
and simultaneously search and rank order HR job leads from more than
40 job sites identified by CareerXroads (The Directory to Job, Resume
and Career Management Sites on the Web) as having quality
opportunities.
http://www.infogist.com/HRJOBSinfoFindersrc.htm#Register

To get a free taste or evaluation of the Platinum version for
14-days, you will need to contact their company's Vice President and
co-founder, Ron Crompton, at (937) 434-1500 x202. You'll probably
need to tell him that your read about his product here and you want
to become a believer too. Good luck and happy hunting.

Head-to-Head Comparison between Infogist and AIRS Searchstation
http://netrecruiter.net/sa/2001/03/infoairs.doc

However, if you're gun shy and uncomfortable at talking on the phone
- LOL, you can still taste and try their Resume infoFinder Gold
product for 14-days as well. It has many of the Platinum features and
is also a great tool.

REVIEWS

Still a youngster in the war for talent, but quickly becoming a major
force, is FlipDog.com. Where some of the better known sites live up
to their chosen namesake, specifically customer service, FlipDog is
truly a welcome bit of fresh air. Their staff is accessible, up to
the key vice presidents of their 150 plus company. I find them very
knowledgeable, resourceful, and fast on the turnaround if an answer
is not readily available. I have been given the opportunity to fully
evaluate their site, just like a paying customer, exploiting all
their bells and whistles like highlighting job postings, or profiling
my "company", or even drawing more attention through a series of very
well placed and read billboards.

One of the best parts about FlipDog is that job postings are 100%
free for corporate employers needing to hire people for in-house jobs.
That includes up to ten free resume agents called Automated
CandidateHunters that deliver a ton of targeted job seekers to your
doorstep every day. However, to view these candidates, you will need
to sign up for their resume service. All candidates who respond to
your free job postings come via email in the form of an easily laid
out resume that can be quickly scanned into your applicant tracking
system, and in many cases a detailed and personalized cover letter.

Batch uploading for all of your jobs is also free. The most used
format is the ASCII delimited file that can be exported from your
database manager. A simple email with your batch file attached is all
you need to get a major source of quality candidates freely flowing
into your recruiter's hands. One of their senior veeps informed me
that one company presently uploads its 3000+ jobs every day.

A new feature just released this week is their Executive Finder.
Basically, this is a new database of job seekers in the $100K+ market
who are either C-level executives or are seeking executive level
positions. It will be interesting to see how their new resume
database compares to other competitors such as 6FigureJobs.com or
BigWigs.net.

A Free Site Indexing Service Plus Much More
Master.com provides free high value application services to your web
site with your site's look and feel. Now your site can have most of
the advanced features found on large portal sites, using the same
software they use but without the need for you to purchase and
install software on your web server.

SOFTWARE

Grabbing All the Gusto
SuperBot 2.5a downloads entire websites automatically, and saves them
on your computer. Due to its HTML remapping technology, the copied
websites look and feel like the online versions, except they are much
faster to browse and don't require you to be online. This application
is small, efficient, and very easy to use. It can also be used to
capture all email addresses on a website or even all resumes from a
free resume database site.

Ranking Your Website
Advanced Site Position (ASP) is designed to locate a website's
position in search engines using keywords. ASP supports two modes of
operation: find the position of one site using several sets of search
phrases or, find the position of several sites using one search
phrase. In both modes, search depth is unlimited.

Relationship Management
This totally free service keeps track of the emails of people who
wish to be notified of changes to your website.

How many passwords do you have? If you're like me you have one for
your email account, one for your free mail account (if you don't have
one you should), one to log on to your company's LAN, another to
access your online investment account, and probably a half dozen more
to access various web sites and applications located on your PC.
Those #@$% passwords! It's about darn time to get all your darn
passwords organized with Darn! Passwords!, an easy to use password
storage utility. Now you will only need one master password to access
all your user names and passwords held within Darn! Passwords!'
database. Setting up Darn! Passwords! is a snap. For each web site
that requires a password you simply enter the name of the site, the
user name, password, and the url. The same goes for an application
located on your PC, but instead of entering a URL you enter the
shortcut to that application. Another similar application, PassMate,
v. 1.1.9, was just released on 3/9/01. This one is freeware.

Desktop Organizer
Say goodbye to cluttered desktops and digging through browser windows
to find what you are looking for. DragStrip for Windows is the
ultimate desktop organization tool and much more! With a simple drag
and drop interface, you can create strips of files, folders,
applications and URLs that you use frequently and then they are all
only a click away. Each strip can have multiple pages so you can
organize them however you want and they will take up less space than
having lots of browser windows open or shortcuts all over your
desktop. You can anchor your strips to the edge of the screen and the
handy "Auto-Hide" feature keeps you from using up your valuable
screen real estate while still having all of the power of DragStrip
at your fingertips.

Free Windows Stuff
Some say you get what you pay for; others swear that free is an
excellent price. Windows users here have a reference point to the
best available freeware in eight categories ranging from business to
systems and security. Whether you want Sun's powerful StarOffice
software or antivirus protection for your home system, you can find
and download it for free. Of course, some of these are pretty hefty
downloads for a dial-up connection; probably best accomplished in the
wee hours of the morning while you're examining your eyelids for
pinholes. While no site has ever been built that is truly
indispensable, this one comes close. Free is indeed an excellent
price, and this site features the most comprehensive set of links to
quality freeware that I've ever run across.

TECHNIQUES OF THE MONTH

Finding Newgroup (Usenet) Resumes
Most recruiters or researchers only use Deja.com to perform newsgroup
searches for resumes. However, Google.com, currently the largest
indexed search engine in the world, also offers a beta version called
Search Groups. Place this formula in its search window and go to the
races. You may want to also add one or more technical keywords to
further target your search. With your formula placed in the search
window, you can also elect to try out the Usenet Advanced Search and
set your viewing parameters to 100 results per screen vs. the default
of 10 in a simple search.

Consolidate All Your Email Using Eudora or Outlook
In order to use an email client to send and receive Yahoo! Mail
messages, you must designate a new incoming (POP) mail server and a
new outgoing (SMTP) mail server. If you can't add new POP or SMTP
servers, you will need to change your current server settings. Write
down your current settings - you may need to revert to your original
settings later if you decide to send and receive messages from your
other email addresses.

Here are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Account Name/Login Name: your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without
the "@yahoo.com")
E-mail address: your Yahoo! Mail address (i.e., user@...)
Password: your Yahoo! Mail password

ODDS & ENDS

Encrypt Your E-mail as Spam
Governments and cabals are all watching, all listening. You know they
read every e-mail you write and send. Conspiracy theorists have
pointed it out for years, yet only now have you seen the truth.
Software helps combat this invasion - PGP and GnuPG integrate with an
awful lot of stuff these days and let you quickly encrypt your e-mail
to resemble a pile of noise. But why lean towards the complex? It's
too obvious that you're encrypting your mail to keep it from prying
eyes. Instead, let the Illuminati see plenty of your e-mail and bore
them to tears with it. SpamMimic encrypts any message as long
diatribes of order processing and plenty of ways to get rich quick.
The result can be fed back into this application by the recipient to
reveal the original message. http://www.spammimic.com/explain.shtml

Take This Job and Shove It
This UK-based website provide free advice for helping people resign
from their jobs. As well as offering a selection of resignation
letter templates (alongside about 30 hilarious spoof letters), they
also offer users a wealth of serious and sensible advice.
http://www.i-resign.com/

Add Fake Text to a Word Document
Here's a handy function you can use whenever you need to fill a page
with fake text for example, to demonstrate a feature in Word or to
work with page layout and design.

In a Microsoft Word document, type =rand(4,5) and then press ENTER.

The numbers in parentheses correspond to the number of paragraphs (4)
and the number of sentences per paragraph (5). You can change the
numbers in parentheses to put more or less text on the page. Or if
you want one long paragraph, just place one number in the
parentheses, which will designate the number of sentences that should
appear in the paragraph.

Caveman Grub
The PaleoDiet advocates merely eating the foods our pre-Neolithic
hunter-gatherer ancestors ate. In modern terms, that means simple
foods, minimally processed and varying daily depending on where you
are and what's available. This sounds like a joke, but it's actually
a highly scrutinized scientific method. It's a serious diet and, most
likely, a very healthy diet. If you choose to follow the diet, you
can find complete directions and sample menus at this Paleolithic
Diet Page and at other sites linked here. The biggest advantage you
have over the originators of the diet (who died out thousands of years
ago) is that you always have food sources. Pre-agricultural
communities didn't have that assurance. There's a ton of reference
material here including groups and sources lists.
