Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000
_______________________________________________

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

Spring 2001 will go down as discovery season. Killer apps for the
HR/recruiting world have emerged in alien bodies that most of us have
never seen. With a little tweaking, they launch us so far to the
forefront that we need a telescope to see who is in second place. As
our world get increasingly larger and more virtual, the not-so-new
concept of data mining will overtake most conventional personal
information managers or applicant tracking systems and be replaced
with multiple cross-referenced databases of applicants tied to
skills, skills tied to companies, companies tied competitors,
companies tied to industries, etc. The true embodiment of information
overload will be exemplified in this new "Big Brother"
profile of the candidate and their industry.

On a less "geeky" note, I was extended the opportunity to
talk
incessantly about how to find a job using the Internet. The
venue last month was a small AM radio station in Leesburg, Virginia
and the program was naturally called, "Geeks on the Radio."
You can
hear both my half-hour and following week full-hour dialogue by
following these two links. However, you will need RealPlayer or some
other app to listen to this streaming audio.

If you haven't filled up your dance card for early June, then
consider a nice relaxing break in the California desert and join me
for my Sunday afternoon session on "Cutting Edge Tools for the
Internet Recruiter" at the 10th Annual Technical Recruiting &
Retention Conference at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort & Spa in
Palm Desert, California. The last time it was held here in 1999, I
remember it was 65 degrees in Los Angeles and 90++ degrees there. But
no one noticed unless they opted for an 18-hole golf excursion on the
property.

CUTTING EDGE TOOLS FOR THE INTERNET RECRUITER

Mail Harvester Advanced Edition
This KILLER APP includes powerful tools for anyone knowledgeable
about web pages and URLs to harvest gold mines of data from the web.
Here are some of its features:

· send email messages in HTML format...includes browser preview of
your message
· manually enter lists of proven, productive URLs to search
· use the URL generator to create thousands of incrementing URLs
that
harvest a site's entire database
· harvests documents from the web - collect entire databases of
resumes as fast as your connection will allow

See my review when used with Google's new Advanced Groups Search
to extract every resume found to your computer:

ReXpress
FINALLY, a visionary app that can automatically parse one or a
zillion resumes at the same time, plus a TON of other features such
as capturing the jobseeker's full name in the resume and resaving
the file by full name or any other attribute or subset of that can be
found on that resume into a rich text format (RTF) file. RTF is the
industry standard by which any word processor can read any
other's file so long as it's saved in this format.

Though this app is geared for the large corporation with a robust
applicant tracking system or the large resume/job portal like
monster.com, it is still a KILLER APP for anyone else who wants to
leverage or remove all that administrative downtime to process 1 or
1,000,000 resumes. And best of all, with little or no garbage
reintroduced from typos (unless they were already there)!

I wish there was time to showcase all the other marvelous bells and
whistles of this app. So if you're wowed by this tiny little
feature,
you can imagine the feeling you will have when you've seen the
other
built-in modules.
See my review: http://netrecruiter.net/sa/2001/04/rex.doc
ReXpress is now available to qualified beta testers for FREE:

REVIEWS

CollegeRecruiter.com has quickly become one of the busiest sites that
specifically targets college students and recent graduates who are
seeking employment or continuing education opportunities. Late last
year this niche job/resume portal completely replaced its separate
job search and resume bank systems with an integrated state-of-the-
art solution. Always moving forward, it became the 8th highest
traffic job site overall with 681,000 unique users and 6,000,000 page
views per month. Then, in February 2001, it began cross-posting the
jobs in its database to over 1,500 relevant Internet sites and news-
groups.

A really great tool is the Resume Match Agent that scours their
database of 123,000+ resumes, all of which are 90 days old or newer
and opt-in, and then emails you the new matches each day. You'll get
one email that summarizes the matches. Should any be of interest,
you'll click on the candidate's name and be taken to their full
resume. http://www.collegerecruiter.com/

SITES

Cultivating All Those Interested Jobseekers
Obtain permission to send future email messages to a given user using
the FormSite.com "mass mailing" facility. Potential
jobseekers who
initially choose to receive your "mass mailings" can, at any
time,
opt-out or decide not to receive any of your additional emailings.
This free service provides the opt-out facility to your users. Every
mass mailing contains a link that the user can click on to elect
never to receive your email again. Once they click on the link, their
email address, and only their email address is removed from your
database so that they will not receive further emails.

list of links. The form for each resource is integrated into the

SOFTWARE

WebQL
Here is the epitomy of a data mining KILLER APP. The secret is
knowing what or where you want the information from. WebQL then takes
the lead using either an existing script or one designed by yourself
to quickly extract out all the information from that page that you
feel is pertinent to your research. The key word here is pertinent.
You don't have to grab everything that's there and take the
time to weed out what you don't want. The scripting language is
very intuitive with a little initial hand-holding. After a few
scripts, you'll be able to strut around and feel like your
company's
senior programmer or researcher. A more detailed review will be
presented next month under the Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet
Recruiter section.

TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

Permission Marketing

All jobseekers who apply to your jobs are SOLICITING you for
attention. All jobseekers who post on fee-based sites such as
Monster.com are SOLICITING you and any other company that is looking
for attention.

Therefore, if you SOLICIT back to the jobseekers YOU ARE NOT spamming
them. You are ENGAGING them, EDUCATING them, and LEARNING FROM them.

Anyone whom your recruiters, website, or advertising identifies as a
potentially employable jobseeker should be retained for a very long-
term relationship via a concept called Permission Marketing.

Permission Marketing or Opt-In Membership allows your company to
legally and regularly send information to the jobseeker related to
the topic for which they subscribed (opt-in). Other messages can be
added, so long as the initial information the candidate requested is
provided. This ongoing relationship provides an incredible sourcing
and referral network.

This newsletter is an example of permission marketing where you have
asked to receive this publication on exploring cutting edge tools for
the Internet recruiter. You may opt-out (unsubscribe) at any time.
You agree to receiving this newsletter based on what you were told
was to be included, or not included.

Many electronic newsletters, similar to this, further leverage their
distribution network, by adding advertising trailers, announcing new
events or opportunities.

major flavors of spyware, Advertiser spyware and Computer Monitoring

true of practitioners in our art of recruiting who are always out
