SOURCERER'S APPRENTICE
Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

Circulation: a big number between 100 and 1,000,000

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

Enjoy the summer. If you're on the fence and there is nothing on the
horizon except hazy days, consider alternatives you've never
explored. Believe it or not, there are still a ton of companies who
need assistance in finding the perfect candidate. They may not be
seeking full-time assistance, but the alternatives are limitless.
It's time to really begin thinking out-of-the-box. Did you know that
the average recruitment advertising display inch can cost anywhere
from $75-200 on a major print daily? Most companies spend thousands
of dollars to advertise just one position. Could you offer your
services at a much lower cost and provide a higher percentage of
qualified candidates? If you're still stumped for ideas and need some
handshaking, send me a nice and personal note about what you would
like to do, and I'll try to show you greener pastures to explore this
summer.

REVIEWS

A lot of work went into preparing for my most recent attendance at
Computerworld. Therefore, I am making available both the PowerPoint
presentation and assorted materials presented. I hope you are all
able to considerably leverage your time with these killer apps.

Unfortunately, a lot of my colleagues are stomping the pavement
looking for their next opportunity. On any given day, I receive
between 15-20 resumes of prospective HR professionals all looking for
work. To this end, I began to scour the web looking for legitimate
firms that could take on recruiters who could virtually work from
home and still derive an excellent income. One such firm, EagleTech,
headed by Ralph Toole of Massachussetts, fit that description.
EagleTech currently employs over 25 recruiters who work in a virtual
world and perform both as account managers and recruiters.
Commissions
are very good and the opportunity to fill another recruiter's opening
is equally good. EagleTech also provides excellent and free training
for both prospective and seasoned recruiters in the full lifecycle of
this business.

SITES

Here is a sleeper site that truly awed the coauthors of CareerXRoads
at Computerworld. In fact, it's such a sleeper that even the author
admits it. Though there are many sites with pre-indexed databases of
resumes that can be searched, this site sports a tool,
unceremoniously known as "Match Candidates" that will automatically
extract your job description and parse it into a very accurate matrix
of skill sets and then search the resume database against these
criteria. This same parser could be used on a candidate's resume to
find similarly talented individuals or even be used as a skills
matrix
overview attachment when presenting to a hiring manager.

Find detailed information on 10,000 US public companies, 14,000
international companies and 44,000 recently added private companies:
profiles, executive biographies, financials, news and more!

You can't go wrong by a site that devotes so much time and assistance
to freely helping you find those illusive candidates. This is just
one example of the many free tools that are available here. The AIRS
Boolean Box acts as a metasearcher for the following five major
search engines: AltaVista, Snap, All the Web (Fast), Northern Light
and HotBot.

Knowing just who owns what in terms of intellectual property can be a
nightmare for authors and others trying to secure permission to use
copyright material. Now the US Copyright Office has come to the
rescue with a simple tool to search for ownership of rights in three
major categories: serials, documents, and registered works such as
films, music, software, and works of art. The search process is easy
and effective, covering works registered since 1978, with some 13
million search terms available.

How Many Times Do You Use the Word "the"? - this site is very simple
and can easily make you, yes you, a better writer. Paste in any text
and get immediate word frequency feedback. It's fast, it works and
it's very useful.

SOFTWARE

This free APP allows you to quickly and easily submit your web site
to 32 of the most popular search engines on the Web, including
AltaVista, Excite, Google, HotBot, InfoSeek, Lycos, MSN, and
WebCrawler. You simply enter your personal and web site information,
select the search engines, and click the "Submit" button.

Thinking about adding a dedicated telephone line for your computer so
you won't miss important phone calls? Think again! Now, you can surf
the Internet on your single phone line without worrying about missing
important calls. That's because this free APP makes it possible to
hear who's calling while you are surfing the Web. You no longer need
a dedicated fax line. They give you your very own, private fax number
that you can publish on your business cards and stationery. Sending a
fax to this number is no different than sending a fax to a standard
fax machine. Faxes are automatically routed to your e-mail inbox as
an e-mail attachment that you can view with standard viewing
applications. Now you can receive your faxes at the same time that
you check your e-mail - which means you can now receive faxes from
anywhere you can connect to the Internet!

Billionaire for 15 Minutes: as dot.com boom/bust stories go this one
is perhaps not so unusual if it weren't for the numbers involved.
Greg Raifman went form comfortable middle class to being worth almost
a billion dollars and back to where he started in about eighteen
months. This well written and lengthy story charts Greg's rise and
fall in the archetypal dot.com story arc, managing to paint a
character portrait of an ordinary guy who briefly flew in the
business stratosphere. While there, check out the link to Fortune's
Billion-Dollar Losers Club on the first page of the story. One
hapless member, MicroStrategy's Michael Saylor, managed to lose a
staggering $13.53 billion.
