HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER
Hey buddy, can you spare a dime? With the volume of downsizings,
mergers and acquisitions surging ahead of new start-ups or new
business, it's no wonder seeing a land scarred with so many HR types
looking for work. It seems everyone is feeling some sort of pinch,
being a big ouchie or just a warning to stay put.
What we need is a non-profit, non-dues paying organization of
volunteers in our profession who are willing to devote a few hours
per month to identify and promote opportunities and solutions so that
no one is ever sitting on a fence.
I know it sounds altruistic, but it is the Peace Corps Volunteer part
of me that often gurgles up when situations like this are occuring
daily. I was contemplating a organization called SAUSE, like in pass
the …
It could stand for the "Staffing Alliance of US Employers." I realize
that this might be a little snobby since there are many subscribers
to this newsletter that are not based in the US. No snub intended,
it's just that SAWE was not pronouncable!

REVIEWS
Named for businessman Gary Hoover, Hoover's Online was launched in
1995 and is an excellent resource for company and industry
information, and its "Company Capsules" provide information on more
than 17,000 public and private companies around the world, often with
extensive links to financials, operating information, and lists of
key competitors. Many of the sections provide just what you'd expect.
The News Center features the day's top business headlines, handpicked
by Hoover's editors, while the Money Channel offers current stock
market data, such as hot IPOs, portfolio tools, stock split
recommendations, and more. Content ranges from rudimentary
information for newcomers to in-depth information for financial
experts. The Industry Update section is a must for the market
watcher, with industries divided by sector and listed as weak or
strong. The site features e-mail alerts about changes regarding your
selected companies--a great way to keep track of your own employer or
competitors. Hoover's also provides tips and tools for the job
hunter. Powered by Monster.com, Hoover's Job Bank offers resources to
research employers and careers.

SITES
Search engines that consistently return "expected" results based on
basic formulas are viewed by this author as ones to invest the time
in. Though not new, it is definitely well worth the daily visit when
sourcing for those elusive candidates.

Before the Net, many went to the public library to start hunting for
a job. JobStar has grown from a federally funded project at Alameda
County Library in northern California to an online resource for both
California (Bay area, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego) and New
Jersey (Jersey City). Like many public libraries, most of its
resources are wide but not deep. You'll find similar stuff - resume
guidelines, career guides, and tips on finding "hidden jobs" - at
other sites, including the Wall Street Journal, which provides
support for JobStar through Careerjournal.com. The best JobStar
resource is probably Profession-Specific Salary Surveys, a directory
to external surveys in 50 professions (from accounting to "wood and
paper").

WebQL allows you to easily extract valuable data from the Internet
(see review in April 2001 issue). Here is a free WebQL script,
courtesy of their top in-house programmer, to extract key officer
data on most major US corporations at Yahoo.com.

If you use Notepad or WordPad for your minor text editing, here's a
super substitute for them that has a lot more features. It seems to
be almost as powerful as 'Word'. And it's free. Crypt Edit is one of
the most powerful freeware word processors. It is a nice replacement
for the standard Windows NotePad and WordPad. Crypt Edit requires
Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98/ME/2000 or Windows NT 4.0 or later to
run. No additional DLLs or whatever are required. It can easily
create, protect, modify, post and print your documents.

TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH
Proximity searches can become tedious without the right combination
of characters, Do you use a state abbreviation, spell out the state,
add an area code or two, or just try a few zip codes? Here is a
simple answer. Try using NorthernLight's GeoSearch.
http://www.northernlight.com/geosearch.html
The search below is for someone with unix and solaris in their
resume. The zip code of 20016 (downtown DC) and an approx. radius of
50 miles to indicate the greater metro DC area.
(url:resume OR title:resume OR resume) AND unix AND solaris AND NOT
(job* OR submit OR opening OR send OR apply OR post OR position OR
opportunities OR eoe OR candidate OR statistics*)

ListBot is a mailing list management site, recently acquired by
Microsoft when it bought LinkExchange. The basic service was free and
hosted a large number of mailing lists. Microsoft has now decided to
shut down ListBot and encourage users to migrate to their more
expensive and business-oriented List Builder service. The more you
pay, the more e-mail you can send.

Pssst! Wanna buy a .biz name? If so, you'll have to wait. And don't
even think about sex.biz. VeriSign has released a list of the most
requested names in the .biz and .info top-level domains (TLDs), two
of the seven new TLDs approved last winter. Travel, sex, music,
business, real estate and computer are among the most popular with
both suffixes, Show is hot with .biz but a no-show in the .info top
ten. None of these names will be assigned until later this year, but
you can pre-register now. Multiple claims on a single domain name get
thrown into a drum for a draw. To discourage domain squatting, any
trademark issues must be settled before any of the new names can go
online.
