Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

While all of us were riding high the last two years, no one could
ever imagine or wonder what would happen when the bubble burst. Would
people continue to do all their extracurricular activities while
standing in line for their unemployment check? After reading almost
every profile in a recent "Time" issue on heroes, I often feel that
the heroes in our profession are those who continue giving without an
ulterior motive up their sleeve. Too often, many deeds are just
vehicles to promote oneself. To this end, I would like to put
together a list of the top ten people in recruiting who have made a
difference for you in 2001, but have never asked for anything in
return. I'll try to nudge you each month through November and then
hope to post the list and a bio of each "hero" in the December issue.
Please also note that since the editor of this of this newsletter
also acts as the final judge, any votes thrown this way will be tossed
into his special circular file!

REVIEWS

Don't ask me why, but I always get a kick from meeting or talking
with people from the land down under. A couple months ago, I got an
email from some Australian who said I had to see his software
product. Of course, understand that I get about 25-30 of these
requests every month. His product, called ResumePipe, claimed to
automatically extract and process all files either attached or
contained in the message area of Microsoft Outlook. For recruiters
using Outlook, this promised to be an incredible g-dsend.

So after several tests I became a believer. This wonderfully simple
application not only processes every attachment and message, but can
also recognize those files that are resumes and process them in any
set of predefined formats. It can also filter and automatically strip
out any extraneous header or footer data and give you that perfect
scannable resume. ResumePipe is but a small player in the arsenal of
killer apps that this Aussie has devised for us recruiters.

SITES

Direct search is a growing compilation of links to the search
interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely
searchable / accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista,
Google, or Hotbot. Although these "general" tools are essential for
the retrieval of Internet based data, searchers often fail to realize
that a massive amount of information is not easily or entirely found
via these search tools. Material "hidden" from the general search
tools is said to reside on the Invisible Web.

Yahoo Groups are great sites for networking. Still not convinced,
then look and see where this newsletter hails from. In my travels
this month I ran across some other notable public Yahoo sites.

Corante is an independent news service that cuts through the clutter,
distilling the critical news and vital intelligence that
decision-makers need to keep their finger on the pulse of the
fast-paced world of technology.

Many independent recruiters or small firms cannot afford the hefty
price tags on most of the "popular" applicant tracking systems (ATS).
If you're like me, you might want to venture no further than a
commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software program like Act!. There are
other equally similar COTS programs like Goldmine or MS Access that
can get skins or overlays to transform them into a very robust ATS.
But in this case, Act! offers up some tips and tricks to maximize
this product like perform a mail merge to a group but have the mail
merge use your e-mail client, or create a lookup of contacts based
on the activities that you have scheduled with them.

Yahoo! Mail is offering a way for its users to encrypt e-mail
messages. Simply check the box "Send via free SecureDelivery.com,"
which appears beneath the cc: field on the e-mail composition screen.
Another clever way to encrypt is through Spam Mimic. This free,
Web-based service actually encodes messages as spam (i.e., the
unsolicited junk mail you receive in your in-box). Recipients can
decode your e-mail by cutting and pasting it into the Spam Mimic site
and clicking Decode.

If you're a trainer or presenter in your secret life, then you'll
definitely want to mosey over to this site and grab every free
template there is, from Lesson Plans to Using PowerPoint.

Employers can verify if a social security number is legitimate by

SOFTWARE

Remember that the law on unsolicited faxes is ten times more severe
than unsolicited emails. You can actually be legally invoiced up to
$500 per unwanted fax. So use this killer app with the utmost
integrity, honesty, and dogooderism. From the maker of MailHarvester
comes FaxHarvester, an idea ready for primetime. A real harvester of
fax numbers - it's incredibly easy to use, cheap beyond belief, and
should be at the top of your Christmas shopping list.

Here is a new entrant for metasearchers. Similar to Copernic, it can
quickly search and find what you're looking for. With the free
version, you can set up filter arguments to include/exclude titles,
URLs, search engines, and the number of hits or returns you want. You
can also set up a semi-complex search like the one below which
assumes that most search engines understand a plus (+) to be a must
and a minus (-) to be a must not. Other features in the free version
include verification of URL and checking for dead links.

ODDS & ENDS

My local Staples knows me by name. They should. I visit them each
month for a fresh supply of ten reams or 5,000 sheets of paper. Why
would a self-professed electronic junkie buy so much paper? To feed
the fax that is being inundated every month with thousands of junk or
spam advertisements. I do this to determine who sits on my favorite
"I Hate Junk Fax Broadcasters" list. Do you have a special someone
that should belong to this club? BTW, everyone one on my list is
specifically niched in the world of recruiting. So, send me your
favorite poster and include their fax as an attachment.

This definitely qualifies as an oddity for me, or what in the world
were you thinking when you offered this tidbit up to your subscribers
as an interesting site. Oh well, call me the fun loving guy. Point
your browser when you're not busy and the boss isn't on the prowl, to
Pogo. This is a free AOL site dedicated to the game enthusiast who
wants to play in real-time with live bodies all over the world.
Choose your addiction (to name a few): Backgammon, Bridge, Checkers,
Chess, Cribbage, Dominoes, Euchre, Hearts, Solitaire, or Spades.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW EVERYTHING

· In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke
in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
· You can put a t-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be
gone in two days.
· To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet
bowl....... Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.
· The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
· To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper
with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in
Coca-Cola.
· To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of
Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
· To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola
to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
· To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking
pan wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before
the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix
with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.
· To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load
of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle.
The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road
haze from your windshield.
· FYI: The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH
is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.
· To carry Coca Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial
truck must use the hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly
Corrosive materials.
· The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the
engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
