HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER
Putting together a newsletter this month was a challenge. I almost
just said the heck with it and was proposing to myself to release a
September/October issue.
Then I happened to catch a Letterman show the other night that re-
inspired me to push on and not let one tragedy catapult into another
one called inaction.
Not that I or anyone will ever forget what happened this month, but I
am luckily alive and my family is safe, and I must continue believing
that there is a future and that it will be safe and healthy and
enjoyable for both my children and their children to experience.
I was especially touched by the effort made by the staff at AIRS to
produce a web site called the Recruitment Help Center whereby your
firm can donate services to help those companies affected by the
terrible events earlier this month. You'll probably never hear
his name, but the genius behind the incredible success of AIRS as
well as the inspiration for this Help Center is none other than their
CEO, Michael Foster.

If you are not aware of the businesses that leased space at either of
the two WTC buildings, you can browse the hyperlinks below which
reflect either the North or South towers.

SAMPLING OF YOUR RECRUITING HEROES
There is a recruiter in Silicon Valley who certainly deserves one of
your hero recognitions. Keith Halperin, kdhalperin@..., has
provided a great service for recruiters in Silicon Valley and the SF
Bay Area by coordinating a list of openings in that area. At our
last contact, he was still looking for his next contract. The groups
also serve as idea clearinghouses. He has promoted recruiter get
togethers for networking purposes. None of what he does gives him a
direct benefit. Good guy!

It is hard, but I would like to nominate Joe Compton and Jon
Gundersgaard. I might forget some obvious one for now but I will let
you know as soon as they come up in my mind. Another name of
such "Past" Contract recruiters would be Susan Raskin.

Wanted to send you some feedback on someone who I think has "industry
impact" - if we can't recommend you - then you really need to include
John Sumser and his staff at Interbiznet/Electronic Recruiting News.
Their daily articles are typically biting, full of insight and
they're willing to do a reality check on the internet recruiting
industry.
The other person I'd recommend is someone I'm pretty sure you've
profiled before, and that's Carl Kutsmode at Tiburon Group -
their "Tip of the Week" newsletter is excellent - they always pull up
new stuff.

REVIEWS
Two resume/job posting sites were reviewed. The first is NETSHARE
that focuses on $100K+ executives; the second is PassportAccess that
draws its content from passive resumes found in public domain on the
web.

SITES
It's tough being #1. Google is presently the top search site,
both in indexed pages, speed, and quality of results. However, there
are several new gunslingers out there just waiting for their chance
to be number one.
http://www.wisenut.com/ - 1,495,332,308 Web pages and counting
http://www.teoma.com/ - returns more relevant search results
http://www.lasoo.com/ - limits the scope of searches geographically
http://vivisimo.com/ - a meta search engine
A guy named Boris Schaefer has used some of his own common - er,
uncommon sense to put together a one-page introduction to Usenet,
which is recommended for all newbies read before they jump into the
established culture of newsgroups. Basically, this summary is useful
for folks curious about the evolution of Usenet. It includes the
amusing "what is Usenet" posting by James "Kibo" Parry ("Usenet is a
Mobius strand of spaghetti"), the Great Renaming FAQ that runs down
the history of Usenet, and the net.legends FAQ, which talks about
such phenomena as the Usenet Oracle and

Bookmarklets are free JavaScript applets that extend the surfing and
search capabilities of Netscape and Microsoft Web browsers. They can
be used to modify the way any Web page is viewed, extract data from a
Web page, and add a variety of new search techniques. The site offers
over 100 scripts, each identified as to which browsers it works with.
Most work with both, many work with Netscape 4.x; fewer work only
with recent versions of Internet Explorer. The scripts are platform
independent. The site's major drawback is that it hasn't been updated
in over two years. Some scripts don't like Netscape 6 and vice versa,
but most scripts still work.

SOFTWARE
Arkysoft List Manager allows you to load a list of email addresses
from a file, merge others into it, sort, de-dupe. The list can
be "cleaned" by using a "Remove" list, by specifying
text strings
that are filters such that if an email contains the text it is
deleted, and by specifying domains that are unwanted and any email
having that domain is deleted. Then, as one of your ideas, the list
can be validated online by looking each address up at a DNS server to
insure the domain of the email address has a mail server assigned to
it. I provided a "Caching" ability that will take domains
that have
already been verified and save them to a file so that the lookup is
performed locally when possible to make it faster. Last but not
least, there is an inbox monitor which will check an inbox every
interval. If an email comes in with the word "Remove" in the
subject, the "From Address" of the email is added to the
remove list
automatically and the email is deleted.

Ever wanted to own Bill Gates's mansion complex? Now you can, sorta,
with this paper model. At the Papertoys intro page, you can get a
model of a PT Cruiser or DeLorean to park in the driveway. Now you
only need a printer that will print this thing out in real scale.
