Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER

While snooping around the other day for another volunteer effort, I
ran across this tidbit from the United Nations. According to Article
19 of its Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UN members and
citizens of the countries they represent "have the right to
freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to
hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart
information and ideas through any media and regardless of
frontiers."

Does this mean that anyone can send us anything they want,
electronically or otherwise as "freedom of expression"
regardless of our interpretation as spam or otherwise annoying
information.

I'd be interested in your personal observations. If I get enough
constructive comments, I may even shine a light on your journalistic
prose.

REVIEWS

Back in November of last year I received my first issue of
Cybersleuthing from CyberSleuth Shally Steckerl. Since then, I have
received four newsletters packed with incredible sourcing tips using
Google and Google Groups. You can join his free newsletter service as
well.

Besides being one of the most prolific writers I know, Barbara Ling
found enough time last year to have a baby as well. Her electronic
newsletter, RISE Entrepreneurial Twist, is always a delight to read.
Here are the titles of her most recent issues: Surviving and
Thriving, Busting up spam, Spying The Finish Line, Travel Back In
Time And Uncover Passive Candidates Today, and Creative customer care
Part I.

AIRS recently updated its SearchStation application to version 6.
Here are a few snapshots of its new look. It is still primarily an
embodiment of what it teaches in their all-day internet recruiting
classes.

SITES

Silenter Anonymous Surfing – this web site uses a proxy server to
hide your IP address and other computer-specific information from
sites you don't want anyone to know you visit. Unlike Anonymizer,
Silenter has no commercial version (at least, not at the moment), so
it doesn't keep prompting you to upgrade for bucks on visits to X-
rated sites. You can choose to filter out cookies, banner ads, and
scripts. http://www.silenter.com/

The Acronym Finder is a world wide web searchable database of more
than 221,000 abbreviations and acronyms about computers, technology,
telecommunications, and military acronyms and abbreviations.

Yahoo Launches Premium Search Service - continuing with its strategy
to charge for more services, Yahoo is launching a new subscription
search service to be called Premium Document Search. For prices
ranging from $1 to $4, or $5 per month, you will be able to search
over 70 million documents compiled from over 7,100 sources. At press
time, it's not clear what those documents were and why they would
command such a premium, but we suspect the product will include
academic periodicals and other for-pay magazines.

TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

I can never say enough about a product that continues to perform over
and over with amazing results. Just the other day I had a major
government agency ask me to identify all potential passive job
seekers who were US Citizens and linguists in a variety of middle
eastern languages. With just a few keywords, I was able to quickly
compile tens of thousands of corresponding email addresses of folks
who were associated as linguists or translators in these languages.
Here are three examples of how I used MailHarvester to accomplish
this task.

Job sites produce few actual hires - It is hard to get a job in a
recessionary environment, no matter what means are used. But some job
seekers say they are becoming particularly disenchanted with big
online job sites.

Why Job Searching is the Second Most Popular Activity on the
Internet - With more than 20 million people registered on the
monster.com job search site, it's clear that we are a workforce on
the move. In a recent executive education session, Peter Cappelli,
director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources, explained how a
dramatically different labor market is changing not just the way
people are hired and fired, but how they view their jobs, their
employers and their careers.

Evaluating the Value of Online Testing - A few years ago, online
testing was being touted as the recruiting tool of the future. Now,
at the height of a terrible job market with unemployment rising and
employers being buried under an avalanche of resumes, it's time to
consider how far online testing has actually come and how much weight
it carries in the recruiting process.

Some Good Online Ad News - Business Week reports that spending on
online advertising fell by 5% to $4.1 billion in 2001. That's not
good news for companies far and wide, including mighty Yahoo which
reported its fifth quarterly loss in a row. Blame the fall-off in
spending partly on the whole economic downturn thing and partly
because advertisers still don't really understand the medium. That
may be changing, however. Although the Internet can deliver mass
audiences, what it's really good at is connecting communities of
people who share specialized interests. By focusing on such interest
groups and concentrating on sectors such as cars, technology, drugs,
and travel where online ads seem to click, advertisers are beginning
to learn how to make the Internet work for them. This article
describes several companies that have gotten a pretty big bang for
their online advertising buck.

ODDS & ENDS

I got my real estate property tax "notice of increase" the
other day. Of course, I want to appeal it. Initially I was bewildered
as what to use in my defense of their exagerated claim. Here is a
great site for defending or appealing those high numbers.

Regarding job layoffs in the U.S.: Joe Smith started the day early
having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 a.m. While his
coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric
razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI
LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN
KOREA).
After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN
INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how
much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN)
to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and
continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.
At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe
decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL)
poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV
(MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good
paying job in.....AMERICA.....
