Cutting Edge Tools for the Internet Recruiter

HELLO FROM YOUR EDITMASTER
Each month I say the next issue is going to be smaller and then I find
a bevy of new and interesting topics and tools. Actually, with the
wife and kids away on vacation in Korea, I've had much more
uninterrupted time to conduct research for this newsletter. This is
probably one of the longest, but I sincerely hope you read all the
articles and try out all the sites. I realize it will probably consume
about twenty hours or more of your time, but with these hazy, hot
Summer days upon us, it will be great to be in front of your computer
in air-conditioned bliss.
We made the move to our new home on June 12th and now I am busily
contracting with a landscaper, painter, plumber, handyman, carper
installer, electrician, etc. to literally do a complete makeover. I
even ventured to Home Depot and Lowes to arm myself with a power
drill, cross-cutting saw, chainsaw, and other devices to officially
don myself as a future handyperson.
In next month's issue, I will focus on College Recruiting. Two new and
interesting surveys revealed that only 4% of all college hires were
attributed to on campus interviewing. Over 26% of hires came from
networking and relationship building over the Internet. The other
survey on IT worker availability determined that there would be over
1.6MM new IT jobs created in the US in the year 2000. Unfortunately,
843,328 will go unfilled. The implication is that we need to
re-evaluate our position on using college graduates with little
industry experience, because there are few alternatives available.
Finally, many of you responded to three survey questions I posted in
early June via the eGroups list. Unfortunately, I was not aware that I
could not control the timing and delivery of each question. Hence,
some subscribers elected to unsubscribe thinking that this was an
uninvited intrusion. Anyway, thanks to those who answered and here are
the results of the Internet Survey.
1. What is the best fee-based, high-tech job board that offers both
resume access and job posting?

identifying candidates or resumes?

Internet as your primary sourcing tool. In the cost, factor all
administrative and overhead charges associated with this venue?

$2000-$2999 16.13%
$500-$999 16.13%

FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
All Your Mail, All in One Place
The ePrompter Web site performs a very useful chore for Windows users.
(Sorry, only Windows users.) It automatically checks up to eight AOL,
Hotmail, Yahoo, and POP3 e-mail accounts. Since many e-mail services
won't forward mail to a mailbox of your choice, your previous option
was usually to check your inboxes one after another. The interface is
a screensaver that tells you at a glance how many unread messages are
held in each account. When the screensaver isn't up, a rotating tray
icon serves the same function. You can view the password-protected
subjects of your messages or the entire messages. Autodial capability
checks messages even when you're offline.

SITES
Power Web Searching
This is an incredibly informative site that also offers free online
tutorials. The Teaching Library was created in order to meet the
challenge of rapidly changing information resources and research
tools. Check out the table on features of selected meta-search
engines.

Search Engine Showdown
This site compares and evaluates Internet search engines from the
searcher's perspective. Developed originally as a way to keep track of
the search engines and share that information, the site has grown to
include: search engine features chart, detailed search engine reviews,
an online newsletter, statistical analysis, and search strategies.

Email Wizardry
The Internet is a great place to perform many business and personal
tasks. But, oftentimes an individual is limited in the tools one needs
to perform those tasks. The information in this article will show how
Internet users, armed only with a simple email account, can do such
things as browse and search the Web, get files via FTP, finger an
address, read and post articles in newsgroups, use Archie to find
files, and send anonymous email.

Excite's New Precision Search

Inference Find
This meta-searcher sends your query to six search engines, and
displays a clustered list of returned documents. Clustering could be
useful if a query returns lots of hits and you want some help in
organizing the information. The advantage of clustering is offset in
part by the absence of any abstracts or content summaries. According
to the site's rather limited documentation, Inference Find passes on
your query as you enter it without attempting to do any translation to
match the query formats of the engines that it uses.

The Blue Window
Ran across this fascinating search engine by accident. Though it gives
you only three conditions of search: AND, OR, or a phrase, this is
what the formula of: "url:resume vb developer 703 VA" turned up when
choosing ALL the words.

search tool. This search engine searches the major meta search engines

Constructing and refining searches in Alta Vista Advanced Search
Alta Vista is a very large database (275 million) with powerful
features in its Advanced Search for refining searches and extracting
the documents you want. It offers two levels of searching: Simple and
Advanced. The Simple Search does not offer Boolean logic or Sorting
(by which you control Results Ranking), two of the finest features
available in any of the search tools currently in existence.

commodity, you also discover immediately what are they running on

Yahoo's Member Directory
Here's a fun tool, using a free homepage provider. Just plug in a
keyword or skillset and then look at all the profiles that correspond
to your search. In most cases, the individual provides not only a home
of record, but their email address as well. The only downside is that
many of the profiles are old and the search works best with just one
word, preferably something that is unique.

Switchboard's People Search
One of the best people locators. After you've lassoed a particular
candidate in Yahoo, go to this site and put in their last name, first
initial, and state. In most cases, you'll get back what you're looking
for, the person's full name, home address, and home phone number.

Picture Yourself Here
Free or inexpensive, Web apps are utilities or programs on distant
servers that run in your browser. Apps.com has a nice introductory
help applet you can't miss when you hit the home page of this large,
excellent portal. Call this site a bookmark service, an organizer, a
consolidator - you're bound to find something pretty quickly that
you'll want to use over and over, especially if you've already used
some of the popular apps linked to these directory pages. The
categories will entice you to register so that you can build your own
collection for access wherever you can get on the Web. I especially
like the topics under HR/Recruiting; not so much for who they are, but
how to get posted there for free.

Spending Money on TV Ads - No Customers, but Maybe Investors
A boatload of dotcoms spent millions of dollars to buy advertising
time on this year's Superbowl TV broadcast. The results? Well, not
much in the way of new users. In fact, from a user acquisition
standpoint, the proposition was a spectacular and expensive failure.
On the other hand, according to this CNet story, a number of Net
companies scored venture funding simply by raising their visibility
with the spots. Salute the new Net business model: raise $3 million in
seed capital; blow it all on one Superbowl commercial that attracts
the interest of venture capitalists; raise more capital; and wash,
rinse, repeat, until you go bankrupt. SourceTV lists all this year's
Superbowl commercials, while Superbowl-Ads.com has more media coverage
of the topic then anyone can possibly digest.

Modify a Web Page Using Another Web Page
You're a Webmaster and you've just found a typo on your home page.
However, you're at a trade show and your tools and files are 2500
miles away. No problem. Using any computer with Web access (like the
one where you saw the typo), log onto this site. Then, just use this
site to fix your page. Omniupdate works better for Windows users (more
tools), but is useful when run on a Mac.

That's easy to remember. By the way, rules.it, knows.it, shows.it, and
does.it are also up for grabs.

Executive Compensation in Silicon Valley
Nothing like a bit of financial voyeurism. SiliconValley.com studied
various public documents and came up with a list of who made what in
1999, all the way from Apple's Steve Jobs ($1 in salary) to Lewis
Platt, CEO of Hewlett-Packard ($1,000,000 in salary, a $910,000 bonus,
and tons of options). You won't find mention of Steve's new jet,
though, a reward from a grateful Board of Directors. An eyeball
estimate indicates that an average executive, VP level and above, gets
a salary in the mid-$200,000 range, usually with generous options.
Other companies go the big options route. Yahoo execs generally earn
less than $200,000 in salary, but take home options worth millions of
dollars. Now you'll know what to ask for when they offer you the
chairmanship.

ADVERTISERS
Invariably, when a subscription base reaches a certain level, many
vendors arrive at your doorstep offering their wares. At first, I
attempted to evaluate all these. But eventually it became almost a
full-time effort to test or pilot and then draft up the results.
Hence, now you will see a list of many new players or folks who have
enhanced their existing product or service and have asked for some
additional exposure. These are all the firms that asked me to showcase
their wares since the beginning of April. This is for your information
only. I do not support or represent any of these firms.

ResSource - in 1999, Forrester Group determined that it cost the
average company about $7.38 to collect one resume. This was measured
from the initial identification and write up of a need, the ensuing
advertising, and the eventual delivery or arrival of the resume.
However, the key point unsaid or not measured was what percentage of
those received hit the mark at least 50% or better. Major job portals
like Monster.com spend millions to attract job seekers, and their
costs are about half of that figure and they too don't deliver
consistent winners. How about a unique resume sourcing service that
costs so little you wonder how they make any money?
