Hi All
Some Lighting engineers call the Eleco/ Davis GR100/150/200 lanterns
have been called Gondelers due to the shape of the bowls
and I heared the old ESLAs were known as Batwings due to the
relectors look like wings of a bat

Thanks - I'll get it out of its bubblewrap and take a look at the label.
All the best,

Hi phil
The Son-E I got from a fellow Streetlighting collector
The 2000w HPI-T and MBF/U came from a Streetlighting depot in Runcorn
I think they said that the MH lamp was used to light the Runcorn-
Widnes Bridge and the 1000w MBF/U was from Stafforshire
Halton Council which covers Runcorn Widnes and surrounding areas they
have a private Contractor called MEWS Mechanical and Electrical Works
Service I think they work on the lighting on the M57, M58, M62 M6 etc
here in the North West and I have also seen them on the East Lancs
road wit another contractor D W Webster they work on Streeetlights in
the St Helens Area
Runcorn Has a Lot of High Mast lighting around the expressway and the
Runcrn side of the Bridge
High Mast Lighting is techically comes under Streetlighting as they
are mainly used where large areas, wide streets, and complex
junctions like A roads and Motorways are linked, I have seen High
Mast Lighting on Mancunion Way and also on the Esat Lancashire Road
as you come into Manchester, also isnt there HM lighting aroun Old
Trafford , Manchester Uniteds football Club.
Here in Liverpool there are High Mast Lighting around Scotland Road
where the tunnels are and in the City Centre Queens Drive at Walton,
and Queens Drive linking the M62 I also saw High Mast Lighting in
Warrington where the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal are
wher the complex roundabout is

Where did you get those from? They're a bit large for general
streetlighting use...or are they? Is it just high mast lighting and area
floodlighting that uses this size of lamp?

Hi Colin
Our later mi series are the same gear as yours but we have earlier
examples which cover the e series lamps, the ma60 your after are lying
all over the spot in our depot as they're being replaced by Thorn
Trident lanterns, there is a bigger version of the ma60 lantern which
is used on motorways i'm not sure of the number but the one i came
across in Preston was about 6 foot in length

Those 18W SOXs were originals but they are listed in the 1985 catalogue as MI 51s to special order only. I have one too so thet cant be that rare.
Sander those Turtles were so called because if you look down on top of the GEC Z85xx series lanterns(especialyy the flat glass ones) they look like a turtle tortoise. The alloy reflector body looks just like the shell especialy with the ribbed indents on the sides and the aluminium casting that acts as the bracket clamp looks like the head sticking out. I,m sure Simon must have a photo somewhere- especially as he has all my data sheets!!!
Subject: RE: [UK_s_Streetlighting] Re: newbie to group
Hi Simon
I may be able to solve the MI55 querry this may origanall might have been a MI50 lantern with a gear tray from a MI55 lantern which uses a 70w SON-I Lamp
The Local council may have modified it by changing the Lampholder and gear to accomodate a 18w SOX Lamp if there is a lable in the lantern see what details or written on it if not there may be a oval shaped formation in the centre this is to accomdate a 70w Son Lamp as it elliptical
failing this you lost me

Incidentally my Philips MI55 GT is has gear for an 18W SOX. There's several
things I don't understand here:
Firstly the numbering - I assumed that '55' refers to 55W SOX. No, the
lantern can only accomdate a 35W SOX. (My thinking being that a MI26 refers
to a 26W SOX-E etc.)

The pile in the garage - well, it's going to take me a long time to get all
that restored - I guess I'm about a third of the way through it at the

I remember visiting the South Lakes about 15 years ago...dunno if that
counts as South Cumbria(!)...and saw around the Lakeside and Bowness
areas lots of small mercury and incandescent fittings on group B height
concrete poles...very picturesque (he said, not knowing what Aureols
are!- anyone care to elaborate?) I suppose they're all replaced years
ago though...more's the pity...the 'ambience' of walking around at night
round there set me off with streetlights so the place has fond
memories...

Spent some of the weekend getting covered in little pieces of glass. It was mirror cutting time as I was replacing some of the smashed facets in my ESLA lanterns... it's definitely a learned art!

I think a lot of people were previously employed by Websters, they are about to lose the contract here in Sussex too. As Phil said, if you start rescuing old stuff you'll soon be the most popular member of the group! I work on the railway and am always searching out old stores but the stuff we are after rarely turns up.
I,m particularly after any old SLI lanterns, have you ever come across any?
Cheers
Bob
PS Colin I,ve got you another 50W MBFB and a 120W SON i. I,ll get them to you via the other Colin in a few weeks.

I too agree with Robert as it is a shame that loads of streetlights get dumped I have manage to get streetlights from local council yard skips wich are anchient and even modern lanterns which have bee ripped out in lighting schemes that are brand new like the Thorn Beta 5s and the Industria 2600 lanterns
Any lantern that is damaged I always take the control gear lamps photocells etc off as for spares
At the moment Alstom who are a contractor for streetlighting are removing some lighting columns around Crosby Merseyside area and I manage to get some Philips MI50s both side and Top entry versions and even a top 4 ft piece of a hockey stick type lamppost with a lantern attached to it
I will be adding two more folders in the photo albums one containig Timeswiches and the other containing Photocells used for streetlighting and one showing different types of control gear from various manufacturers etc and one which wi show types of brackest and lamppost will be added soon

oriented,i must warn you's however i work on streetlighting for a
local authority and am the biggest culprit for getting rid of old
lanterns
Mack
Recently there are Streetlighting replacements going on within the Sefton area of Merseyside UK they are Crosby, Netherton, and Bootle as there are a lot of Road works too which is currently hampering me traveling to these Locations which is annoying me as in some of the streets there are lanterns dating back to the 1950s They are AEI, ELECO and GEC lanterns also there are old Relite, GEC and early Philips MA50/90s from the 1970s and some MI50s both Side Entery and Top entry versions
Trust the Council to Block the Main Road where I live and divert public Transport miles out of the way
Hope fully the Road works might be finnished before the Streetlighting refurbishment are finnished
To undo the grub screws you can first use WD-40 failing that soak them overnight in a drum of Diesel or Paint brush cleaner as this has Kerosene as this works over 80% of the time if this fails try and heat them but be careful as this may weaken the metal, if all fails try and drill them out with a slow speed drill failing that I cant help
If they are the same as the lights in Enfield Avenue in Crosby you may have a hell of a job as these streetlights are Pre War my father remembers them when they had Mercury Lanterns on them and they were changed them for SOX lanterns similar to the Thorn top entry Beta 5s and Philips MI50 GT top entry lanterns in the 1980s
Good Luck

Hi Lee
Yes it was me you saw carrying the streetlight It was ripped out form Merrilocks Road in Blundellsands and a fellow streetlighting collector got it for me
The only snag is the top of the lamppost is still on it as the grub screws are rusted into the cup on the swanneck with sea air
I am going to grind it level and try and get a base welded to it ot make it stand
Thanks for the Gamma 6 canopy I will try and find a bowl and top for it when I either see any in a Street Lighting Depot or being ripped out
All the Best

Hi All
I have added some of the rare lamps which were used in Streetlighting
in to the folder called Discharge Lamps I have in My Collection
they include a Old Narva Clear HPS-E Lamp which I bought from Amy
(mercury_1kw) which was made in the Old Eastern Block of Brelin when
under control of the Soviet Union before the end of the cold war and
Peristroika and Glasnost when we lived under the threat of a Nuclear
War
also there are lamps from the 1930s like the Osram (GEC) MA/V lamp
and also SLI/H lamps in 60w and 200w they look like Fluorescent Tubes
and also is the baby of the Low pressure Sodium Lamps a 10 watt SOX
lamp
there ate a wide range of mercury lamps which are discontinud a first
design of a MBF/U lamp from the 1950s and MB/U lamp from 1961
More Lamps to be added at a Later Date
All the Best
Colin
Hi Colin
I shall be the first to post I have left streetlights_l as why people
are there to cause trouble and Amy has explained what has happened
with your P C she has also explained other things
I have saved you the 400w MH lamp for you it is Clear Elliptical
(looks the same as a 400w SON-E/MBF/U lamp) and is made by Venture
and is for use on HPS gear
As soon as I get the Gamma 6 Light unit from Amy and change it on a
job I shal also give you the one which is being replaced it is for a
80 MBF/U lamp with a 3-pin BC cap
I hope we dont have any problems with members of this group
