For those who don't know, here is a video of the fire of the former

George,
The turntable at Swartswood was probably used to turn the L&NE pushers from
Hainesburg Jct. There was a turntable at Hainesburg under the Paulins Kill
Viaduct that was the L&NE's not the NYS&W's to turn the engines. There was also
a siding at Hainesburg next to Rt 94 that the Pushers were on. This is the old
L&NE ROW that went under the mystery tunnel of the Cut-Off.
What is your website to see your passes?
Thanks.

Subject: [SussexBranch] Mystery Truntable
Perhaps a dumb question, but do any of you DLW/Sussex Branch experts know if
the Lackawanna ever leased motive power to either the L&NE or NYS&W? I ask,
because there was a turntable just east of Swartswood Jct. on the L&NE, for
which I've never seen a picture of. I'm not sure that the land profile lines
up, but the judging by the size of the pit where the L&NE's TT was, it was
small as is the one in the mystery photo. Just a wild thought.

No particular time frame. Something from DLW or EL when the Sussex Branch was
in fact a branch and there was still a small yard at Netcong. I seem to
remember a long siding that paralleled the main through town plus at least one
other double end siding and a sub track on the west side that served a freight
house. My memory, however, be playing tricks on me. It has been a long time
since I rode on 1009, 1028 and the weekend trains. They came off on May 9, 1959
- a half century ago.

Do you mean anytime between 1950 and Conrail, or some time in
particular. I make no guarantees.

Monomania can be a good thing
== Just Passing this along -Dave ==
Hello,
We just returned from a bike ride and part of the trail has recently
been graded. It is the section in Byram, between North Shore Rd and
Morris Sussex Turnpike. It was graded, but no new material was put
down. Some of it is loose soil, making the riding a bit of a challenge.
This was my first time on the trail, so I don’t know how long ago it
was done, but it appeared very recent.
Looking back on all those years now, what an awful lack of vision for the
future. Of course, by 1966 the interstate highway system was booming, and Route
80 was quickly approaching the southern tip of Sussex County. Gas was also only
25 cents a gallon. I guess the politicians and others saw no need for a train,
passenger or freight, with a "super highway" coming so close to the county.
Sigh. So now a "new" rail line is being planned for the old Lackawanna Cutoff,
with a new station to be built, ironically, not too far the old one in Andover.
I like the feeling of "yesteryear" when I am on the trail between Waterloo and
Newton, which I hike often. I saw a bear yesterday just north of Andover. That
was cool! (I didn't bother him!)

It's a turn of phrase designed to emphasize the last run. Some folks
still believe the big Railroadian trip on the Saturday was the last run
to Branchville.

Hmm. Let's see...
Years back, I was just parking the car on Yates Ave and got out and
someone rode by on a bike and said authoritatively that I was too far
out in the road.
Once while walking down from Branchville my wife and I were met by a
Ranger at the (now in the past tense) washout. She said she was
checking the erosion.
Other than that, I've made a small fortune digging up gold pocket
watches at accident scenes.... ;-)
(that's a joke)

I think sometimes (when there are markers are on or near trees), they indicate a
tree to be removed from the trail or removal of an obstructive root sticking up
within the trail.
But in this instance, it sounds as though the markers are not on or near trees,
so your insecticide/herbicide theory would seem to be the best guess.

If you're talking small metal-wire stakes, maybe a foot in height, with 1
1/2 to 2 inch square plastic flags on top, and semi-randomly placed about, I
believe that those mark spots treated with an insecticide or herbicide.

You'd probably get sent to Guantanamo.
As long as you're a responsible looking adult, and don't do anything wrong
other than be there, it's highly unlikely that anything worse than a
jaw-boning would happen to you. I've walked many trails in NJ at times when
they were legally closed (often well into the dark hours of the night) and
never had a problem or been challenged.
In fact, the only time I had an encounter with law enforcement was daylight,
and clearly under legal use conditions: It was a nice sunny day; I got
tired, and laid down to take a breakon some grass in the shade. I awoke to
a Police Office speaking to me. Someone had seen me laying there
(apparently didn't hear me snore) and reported a dead body on the trail.
Sorry, Officer, don't bring out the body bag yet.
