I'm thinking that Johnny's might have been located where 'Jim's Lunch"
now operates. The group that went on my Augusta-Branchville tour ate
there. Pretty nice.

Shame that Johnny's wasn't open on the 'Last Day.' Ed Montgomery, a
passenger on that train in 1966 said he and his friend had a few hours
to kill in Branchville, but that the whole town was shut down--not even
so much as a soda machine!

New Jersey Herald - July 11, 1872

The last rail on the new Sussex branch across the
meadows was laid last week, and on the 4th of July all the
trains on the Sussex road ran over the branch. Since that
time gravel trains have been ballasting the road and it is
expected that the road will be in perfect running order in
a few days. The building of the contemplated new brick
passenger depot with the proposed accommodations, has
been postponed and in its stead a temporary frame
structure is now being erected. The excavation for the
foundation of the other still remain, and it is to be hoped
that before long that Newton can be able to boast of a
long needed commodity--a passenger depot that will be a
credit to this town.

The position of operator at the (Stanhope) station appears to be a
difficult one to fill, as the third operator in a week is trying it. Mr.
Heinz did not like the position and left. So did another operator who
tried it for one day, and now Frank Drake is filling the position, and
we would be pleased to see his appointment made permanent even though he
is a young man who is starting out in life with a position right at home.

Sorry about the delay, My isp was down after a lightning storm and I've
been busy elsewhere.

The last passenger train left Branchville New Jersey on July 10, 1966.

The last passenger train left Newton, New Jersey on July 13, 1966

And for the record, the last passenger train left Andover, New Jersey on
October 2, 1966.

Service to Branchville was only on Saturdays and Sundays (the milk
trains) for years before abandonment.

I have just finished the drawings in the modeling section of my site for
the Lackawanna station in Franklin, New Jersey which was shared with the
Susquehanna. About two full sides of this station had to be
extrapolated, (guessed at,) but I think it is a fair representation of
what once was. Hopefully it will help anyone who wishes to model the
Susquehanna's Hanford branch or the Lackawanna's Franklin line of the
Sussex Branch.

As usual, any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Fred,

The Waterloo station story is involved. There were at least 2. The
first one was two stories and barn-like. It supposedly burned down in
the 1920s. I'm working on documenting this.

The second station was smaller--it must have been, as I've spoken to the
woman who grew up in it. Her Uncle Willis bought the station and moved
it to a location south of the Netcong circle on 206 (103 Rt. 206) It
still exists as a rental--threatened on one side by Meier Stone and by
the ever widening Rt. 206 on the other.

Lowenthal's book: 'The Lackawanna RR in Northwest NJ' has a picture of a
small shack on the station site at Waterloo, but this is too small
(IMHO) to be the dwelling in question.

>From what I read today at the library, I theorize that somewhere after
1922 the big stationed burned. The DLW built a smaller one which the
retired agent lived in as a caretaker.

Sometime around 1942 (?) the DLW abandoned the westbound main and I
think it was at that time the small station was purchased and moved. I
think the DLW THEN put up the small shack until it disappeared.

(an incomplete story, but hey, I needed a hobby.)

The maps I have are from Netcong to Branchville. Some I had microfilmed
years ago. At Warbasse Jct it shows a complete interchange with the NYS&W
(proposed or real?)on the west side toward the humus company spur off the
NYS&W with several yard tracks and a connection with the NYS&W on the Sparta
side with several storage tracks. This whole setup formed a wye with the
NYS&W on the Newton side of the NYS&W. Also shows the Sussex Branch wye and
a yard but more detailed than the site drawing. These are very difficult to
see as they were erased during revisions. Also, for Branchville you can see
the shadows of the old track alignment prior to the station being moved from
one side of the tracks to the other. It shows that the station was moved to
a spot on top of the lead to the Branchville turntable.

Dave send your address and I'll mail the maps as B-size drawings or we can
meet on a weekend when I'm up in Blairstown.

Well, the gem of the day would have to be this article stating when the
agency was discontinued at Waterloo. I didn't have time to crosscheck
it with the other two papers, but...

Stanhope Eagle - May 24, 1922 issue

Waterloo station, on Monday, with the permission of the Public Utilities
commission, had its agent and telegrapher, J.W.A. Lee, removed, making
it a non-agency station, with caretaker in charge.
The express and freight will be billed through Hackettstown. Since the
Sussex Railroad was run into Netcong in 1902, business has been
comparatively small. Mr. Lee had been operator for twenty three years
previous to that time at Waterloo, and was made its agent ten years ago,
and is now retired on a pension.

Gene,

I'm working on that. I have some access to a 1960 Val Map of
Branchville, but it's in terrible shape. Next best thing would be to
take the Schaumburg track map from the modeling section
(http://srr_1854.tripod.com/Modeling/trax-schaumburg.JPG) It needs some
adjusting, but generally I think it's pretty much there.

Maybe I can work something up for you.

Despite what my fellow Franklinites remember about the 1920s, I think
I've pretty much got a case that shows a turntable WAS constructed in
Franklin in August of 1872. Three articles (below) from 3 different
newspapers all state that one was being built near the depot.

Being as the Sussex Railroad entered Franklin proper in September of
1870, I'm wondering if the turntable didn't have something to do with
the Pochuck mines in McAfee. In 1872 the railroad was building to
McAfee and completed a new depot there as well as an engine house.

Lowenthal's work has a statistical survey of the Sussex Railroad which
clearly states a turntable existed in Franklin, but there is no evidence
(yet) of it existing after the 1880s. This could be because when the
predecessor of the Lehigh & Hudson built down from Warwick in 1880, they
built a turntable for themselves. Perhaps the SRR was allowed to use it
and no longer needed the one at Franklin.

Someday I'll find a map or a photograph of the turntable next to the
Franklin Station!

Welcome to the new home of the Sussex Branch List. For the Newcomers,
this list is basically used for announcements about progress in my
historical research about the Sussex Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna
& Western Railroad. I have no problem with any Sussex Branch related
discussion here--in fact, I welcome it!
