A&NW went from narrow gauge to standard (4'-8 1/2") on 10/1/1891
The extension from Fairland to Llano was completed June 7Th 1892.
One reference notes that the line into Marble Falls was re-gaged on
8/10/1992 .
.The work on the Fairland to Llano extension was done by the Pacific
Improvement Co. which was the construction arm of SP. Pacific Improvement also
did the re gauge of the line. At the time of the re gauge the line was owned
by W. B. Isham and Associates but it is most likely they represented Southern
Pacific. In 1901 the Legislature was asked to authorize the H.&T.C. to acquire
the A&NW with the requirement to build a large passenger station in Austin and
extend the line from Burnet to Lampasas, which was done the following year.
I have worked with the ASTA for 19 years and have noted many times
that some of the fence posts along the line are actually old narrow gauge ties,
some with spikes still in place, these ties show that no tie plates were used
under the rails and they were made from cedar trees, we have one such tie on
display in the depot in Bertram.
If you have any questions about the old line I might be able to
answer them.

Anyone know for sure when the A&NM was broadgauged? I've seen references from
1881 to 1901. Did narrow gauge make it to LLano?
