I attempted to send a msg from Yahoo and it didn't go through - it came back with a body of msg empty or something like that. It may have been a Yahoo glitch, not sure so I'm resending.

Apologize for the late introduction but better late...well you know how that goes. *grin*

My name is Sue Elvins and I'm the owner of A Page Or 2 Web Design and Hosting. I've been in business for approx eight yrs now and have been spreading my wings beyond the web consulting direction more into systems integration and networking. I recently received my BS degree in Management Information Systems so that has helped me advance my career level more towards server administration and other levels of that sort.

I'm a UNIX and MUMPS programmer by trade and stumbled into the web world by accident one day when I was bored from writing other code - it stuck and then went from there. Besides HTML and XHTML and CSS, I have learned and used other web coding and programming languages (ASP, XML, PHP, MySQL, VB, and SQL to name a few). On the networking side it falls into an entirely new ballgame. (Windows 9x, Windows Server 2003, Apache, System A&D, SDLC, System Architecture and IT project management to name a few on that side).

In either situation whether it be the web consulting or server administration (or both) I am building both and growing the learning experiences based on what I have from college and also from self learning.

I look forward to speaking with others who can provide any information to telework or telecommute in these two fields. Thank you for having me in the group!

Regards,

Greg,

I am working on this angle as we speak as a service. I keep hoping
that there are alternatives beyond some of the job boards that allow
you to search for telecommuting. Since there does not appear to be a
specialty in place, allow me to help you in this effort.

To people with an established LinkedIn Profile and proven
telecommuting experience, I would be happy to take your resume and
market you to the companies I ALREADY work with who hire telecommuters.

For you I know the quality of your work, the completeness of your
profile, and your resume, and would represent you in a minute.

Should others wish to also receive a similar service, I have but a few
caveats for my marketing services:

1. You must have present and proven telecommuting experience, as it
really does take a special talent to work from home.

2. You must provide a complete LinkedIn Profile of your skills
ideally with some endorsements that help you to sell yourself- not
just to me, many of our recruiters and hiring managers will shop from
our network connections for the best of the best, your profile can
work harder for you than your resume in this front! For help on this,
refer to
http://linkedinhfcngroup.blogspot.com/2006/10/what-experts-might-share-about-lin\
kedin.html.

3. You must be registered on my Jobs Database to be represented in my
eCandidates special marketing to Telecommuter Companies. New
Candidates register here:
http://webconnect.sendouts.net/CN_Frame.aspx?ID=HelpingFriends&SiteID=WebConnect\
&Group=HelpingFriends&Key=CN

After we have validated the "excellent" candidates for Telecommuter
positions, they are added to the eCandidates newsletter that is shared
with other recruiters that hire telecommuters. Here is a sample of
that newsletter:

I just finished a telecommute contract. My team consisted of five
software developers, which makes us technical geeks, somewhat more so
than most people. We were located in New Jersey, Florida, North
Carolina and Colorado. We worked on a project for six months and
never had a group face to face meeting.

I maintained initial communications among team members by holding
meetings twice a week. I set up both an 800 phone conference number
and online meeting software. During the meetings, I would show my
computer's desktop with any presentations I felt were needed, both
Visio and Power Point. If another team member had information to
present, I would set them up as the presenter. We used this
technology to show each other progress being made on our components.

In addition to this, I called each team member at least once a week
to discuss their development efforts. I encouraged them to call
other team members for advice and technical tips. We maintained
constant email communications as well as Instance Messenger for quick
communications.

From a software development standpoint, this worked extremely well.
The developers could have their quite time when they needed to
concentrate yet they were also connected with the whole team and
project. Where this failed was with upper management. They would not
join in the team meetings, so they never had a sense of progress.
They could not drop into a developers cube or watch stress levels
raise, so they could not determine if their money was being spent
well or wasted.

Each team member could set their own schedule, as long as they met
the meetings I hosted, and they produced the required results when
they said they could deliver. Mothers could take their children to
school. I would take long walks in the middle of the day. Others
could visit their doctors or their accountants. The only
expectations were the deadlines and deliverables. This worked well
because the team was selected based on previous telecommute
experience and their own personal motivational drive.

I used Budget Conferencing ( www.budgetconferencing.com ) for the 800
conference number,. The computer online meetings were hosted by Goto
Meeting (www.gotomeeting.com ) as a lower cost alternative to WebEx.
A quick Google for "online meetings" will discover many choices for
both software and phone conferencing. Each team member used their
own email. While I used Microsoft's Instance Messenger, many of the
team used Trillion.

For the more geekish issues, we set up an FTP site for file
transfers, used Microsoft's Source Safe for source code which was
accessed with Source Offsite. We used Test track Pro for bug and
feature tracking.

I am interested in how others are feeling about the telecommuting
environment, and the companies that support the telecommuting culture.

For those of you that are not in an office at all, how do you stay in
touch?

How do you bring an familiarity to your work environment?

Have you read anything recently about the merits of telecommuting that
you would like to share?

As you know, this is a topic of interest to me.. If ya'll ever have
news or profiles of companies doing this well, please share with me!

I read this week that California is in the news for their intent to
take a firmer role on reducing emissions and supporting more green
business programs. I believe the combination of social and business
change is essential to achieve a greener business environment,
attainable in the maintstream and not just the purely affluent.

As many of you know, telecommuting is as challenging for the Employer
as the Employee today, and yet there is so much good that could be
done through best practices and policy that supported telecommuting..

I am living in one of the states of the U.S. with record poverty due
to the loss of big business manufacturing in this area and Michigan..
However I KNOW that there is amazing opportunity for cost savings,
benefits, and attracting the best of people that can work from anywhere.

Would love to hear others thoughts.

What do you think is required for green business, telecommuting, and
policy for businesses to become a mainstream value?

It seems to be a constant struggle for resource or business risks...
However it does not have to be so hard..

My opinions are here. Would love to hear others opinions.

BACKGROUND
I'm a Stanford alumi building a web service startup in the "personal

many people feel similarly and we expect rapid adoption within months

development methodologies and innovative, new algorithms. You'll be
working with young technology professionals with previous start-up and
VC experience. If you love startups and doing things that no one has
done before, this project is perfect for you. This is a great way to
get involved early before we take off.

NEED, TIME LINE & LOGISTICS
Starting immediately, we need 2 bright, motivated programmers for a
short-term, part-time development project to take us from a prototype
to a stable alpha product. The project is estimated to take 2 months
and require 10 hours per week. The work may be done remotely and
flexibly to fit your other commitments. Compensation will include
cash and equity. There's potential for follow-on work and a full-time
offer down the road. You'll be working with me closely as the
UI/product manager.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS NEEDED
We need 2 bright, motivated programmers with the following experience
and skills:
- Experience or passion for building rich user experience,
AJAX-leveraging, consumer-facing web sites and tools
- Experience building IE (C#) or Firefox (XUL/Javascript) extensions
- Strong grasp of Javascript and XML
- Strong grasp of either Java, Ruby on Rails or Python on Django
- Strong grasp of web site layout and HTML

ATTITUDE DESIRED
We want to work with people that have:
- High ethical and work quality standards
- Ambition and vision to have a huge impact
- A "get it done", "whatever it takes" attitude
- An optimistic, positive, "can do" perspective
- Creativity to design new solutions and "workarounds"
- The ability to "figure it out" with little or no guidance

CONTACT
If you want a shot at the startup dream, please send me your resume
and a brief description of why you think you're a good fit. Please
send this and any questions you have to Victor Karkar at

From: Jon McCombie <jonnymac@...>

To: Telecommuter_Professionals@yahoogroups.com

I recently completed a round of interviews at a "virtual" company, where
all positions are 100%-telecommute, and all employees work from their
home offices. Some positions require substantial travel, others do not.
The company is Teachers-Teachers.com. Their website describes their
business better than I can in a quick e-mail. Their current openings may
be viewed at

http://www.teachers-teachers.com/workforus/

If one of their open jobs sounds interesting, follow the application
instructions on the website.

There wasn't a good match between them and me, but maybe there will be
for you. My only relationship with them is as a former employment
candidate; I get nothing if you apply for or accept a position. If you
do apply for a job there, I'm happy to share my insights with you in
private e-mail or on the phone.

Good luck!

Jon that is a really great question. I have been watching for
emerging standards in this area, with great interest as well. I have
not to date seen anything, however a LinkedIn friend just offered to
put me in touch with one of the Telecommuting gurus he knows...

Let me do a little sleuthing, in my networks, unless others happen to
know of such a standard being written.

Cheers,
Dawn

I am in intermediate interviews with a "virtual" company: all jobs are
100% telecommuting. Great! Just what I was looking for!

To determine what salary I can reasonably demand, I used salary.com,
salaryexpert.com and the IEEE salary survey to check the going rate
for a person with my experience and skills, doing this specific job
function for a company of this particular size and industry, and I
find a number. Location matters: all other things being equal, San
Jose salaries are much higher than, say, Wichita, KS. A virtual
company can look anywhere geographically for its talent, so for my
figuring, I assume the worst (Wichita, KS). I get a number.

In early discussions with the company, their stated range for this
position is at the 20% percentile -- for Wichita, KS, not San Jose,
CA. Discussion reveals -- in not so many words -- that the company
believes employees should pay a premium (i.e., accept a salary
reduction) for the privilege and convenience of working from home.

I know this "telecommuter salary premium" was not and is not the case
at my former employer, Sun Microsystems. Is this an emerging industry
standard, or is the company I am interviewing with just trying to play
"salary hardball"?

Hi Everyone and welcome! We started this group to support the number
of telecommuters and aspiring telecommuters.

This is your forum! Please feel free to post great tools, support and
productivity resources for working at home. If you come across
studies or companies that are doing great work to enable
telecommuting, share that as well.

Feel free to add relevant Links and Files, and browse our Links
Library! Lots of good stuff, and there will be even more as more of
you start to contribute your best material. We are stronger as a
collaborative community, and where could that be more important than a
group of people who value being professionals, working from home.

Here is a recent article I read on defending work from home strategies:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2006/062006-telework-backlash.html

As a work from home employee for 7 years I am proud to have given up
my office, office politics, and trading it all for better life balance
and more controlled productivity.

Your host,
Dawn
