I actually think this is an excellent idea! First, you are active in
the topic, so you can establish yourself as an expert quickly, and
you will enjoy helping others in a topic you enjoy.
Second, I think there is always money making potential where your
primary target audience is parents, because not only sports related
products, ads, etc will appeal to them, but anything related to
parenting.
Do your research, but it sounds like you already have the backbone of
a plan. If it were me, I would start with the broad site and break it
donw later on when you get enough traffic to warrant it.
I would also do both a blog and a website myself, the website could
be a portal for parents to sports issues, and the blog can be used as
a marketing tool. I know there are a lot of sites out there right now
that are just blogs, but I think most people searching for a lot of
information prefer the structure of a web site as well.
Let us know how you move along with this!
