Dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of Western Maryland Railway equipment.

Western Maryland 7436 was part of an order for five SD35s, 7432-7436, built in December 1964, serial number 29894, frame number 5675-5. After the Chessie merger it was repainted but retained the number 7436 into the CSX era. It is the last remaining Western Maryland SD35.

It was retired by CSX on July 16, 1986 and acquired by Burlington Northern Industries. It was sent to VMV in Paducah, Kentucky where it was rebuilt to SD38P specifications and leased to the Burlington Northern Railroad. The rebuild consisted of upgrading the 567 prime mover with a roots blown 645 and the electrical system was upgraded to dash 3 specifications. It was assigned the number BN 6267 and used exclusively in hump service at Argentine Yard in Kansas City, Kansas. Subsequent to the BN merger with Santa Fe it was renumbered 1556.

BNSF retired 1556 during 2009 and placed it in storage at Topeka, Kansas. With assistance from group members Brian Gessel and Pat Wilkinson we were able to contact the motive power managers at BNSF and have reached an agreement for the purchase of another Western Maryland Survivor.

On November 29, 2011 BNSF SD38P 1556 arrived in St Louis, Missouri on BNSF train H-GALMAD en route to Metro East Industries. Today 7436 and 7471 are wearing a fresh coat of gloss black. (Mark Mautner photo Feb 6, 2012)
