Description
Dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of Western Maryland Railway equipment.
Western Maryland 39 was built in April 1957 as part of the next-to-last order of GP9s; serial number 23270, frame number 5537-1. This locomotive has the distinction of being the last existing Western Maryland first generation diesel that ever wore the red-white-black "circus" paint scheme.
On October 10, 2008 the George's Creek Railway was the high bidder for GP9 39 at an auction, which was held to liquidate the rolling stock and other property of the Knox and Kane Railroad.
In this Tom Mugnano picture of the reunion, it has now joined WM GP9 25 in Luke, Maryland to once again move freight in revenue service on Western Maryland rails.
