If you find yourself at this intersection in Ridgley,WVa just outside of
Cumberland,Md you might just find yourself looking at a Steam train in this
K-10 eyeball mirror.

Tom,

Thanks for sharing this and other photos [on railpictures.net] in
November and October of the current scene. I live in Michigan and have
not been to western Maryland since the late 1950's.

Tom is probably too young to know about Lover's Leap. : )

Tom took his picture from the Western Maryland side of the narrows, slightly
west of and on the opposite side from Lover's Leap. The cars parked at the
bottom of the frame are in the parking lot of Cline's Restaurant. Once upon
a time there was an Esso station at that location called Lover's Leap Esso.
If you go in the restaurant they have some pictures on the walls of what it
looked like.

When the Esso station was still around, there was a third track on the B&O
side of Will's Creek. That was once upon a time the Cumberland and
Pennsylvania Railroad's Wharf Branch that went west to Mt. Savage Junction
and on to Mt. Savage. On the west end of the Narrows was the Eckhart Branch.

If you know where to look, there are still a few sticks of rail from that
track right along Rt 40 below a billboard.

Most people think the overlook below the plastics museum is lovers leap but
its not. Lovers leap is located about halfway between where i took my
shots and the plastic museum or whatever it is in that building.

So, I was on wmwestsub.com today looking at pics of Maryland Jct.  Ive been on
there before but today was different.  I browsed over the pictures several times
trying to get my bearings as to which direction each photo was taken.  Then I
ran across the photo Ive attached here.  Im not gonna lie, it got my hopes up
for like 2 seconds.  Can someone please explain this photo so I can go on with
my life lol.  Photo dated 1972.  Original is on the wmwestsub site under
Maryland Jct. Shops, its the one featuring 3579 leading 3 other WM GP35's.

After weeks of delays due to moving to a new building and prepping 39 for
painting, today we finally sprayed the first coat of primer on the geep. I say
first coat because there will be more. We had needle scaled and orbital sanded
the surfaces to remove rust, scale, old paint (old burned paint), etc and needed
to get something on it to protect it from rusting again. There is still some
metal work that needs to be done, but the man doing that part of the restoration
recently had some minor surgery and was not able to do the work. The biggest
item remaining is rebuilding the battery boxes.

Once the metal work is done, we shoot more primer and then shoot the red. I want
the cab done first in order to install the glazing. Once that is done we can use
a space heater while working outside.

On another note, and a sad one, another delay and distraction to our project was
the untimely death of one of the founders of the George's Creek Railway on
October 20th. Gary Michael Riley and I have been friends since 7th grade. When I
returned to the east coast in the summer of 2002, I was looking for a piece of
land with track on it so I would have a place to put my FA2, S2, and a few
pieces of rolling stock. I never dreamed I would wind up in the short line
railroad industry.

Mikey, as I called him, took a different carreer path than I did. He hired on
with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1970 as a brakeman. When he retired from
CSX in April of 2004, he had worked his way up to Cumberland Terminal
Superintendent.  When I approached him with the prospect of 3rd party switching
at NewPage, his first reaction was a smile. He was a railroader through and
through and by that time retirement had proved boring for him. He
enthusiastically embraced the challenge. He opened doors for us that I, by
myself, would still be knocking at today. There is no question that Mike Riley
is one of the main reasons why there is a George's Creek Railway today. He is
missed.

Is there a better way of getting to the remains on Bowest Yard in favor on
walking in from off the WM Mainline?

I was up in Connellsville Saturday and photographed alot of areas from the P&WV
bridge down thru town and across the bridges into Bowest. I'll add the photos
to the WMWest Sub site soon.

When and Why was the WM/P&LE bridge thru town taken out? I would think it would
have remained for the hiking trail, by bringing in more hikers for better access
to downtown. Got some photos of what still remains of it. Funny how they cut
off the top of the bridge but left the steel supports standing around the "Big
Six Cafe/Bar". I see that the former P&LE Connellsville Yard is now a Martin's,
and the Chessie caboose behind the store is sitting in the mud. Didn't get to
see the WM Greenwood Yard. It seems like the railtrail up that way takes
detours around obsticles rather than replacing missing pieces of the former WM
and making on nice straight-shot trail. (ie. Markelton underpass, Pinkerton
Tunnel, bridge at Confluence, etc.)

One last question about my next trip up. What's the story with Pinkerton
Tunnel? Thought I heard it was cloesed because of peices of wall falling and
that it's too bad to fix. Is it possible it will be fixed one day similar to
how Big Savage Tunnel was?

Thanks,
Jeremy Cooper

Having driven that maze in the last month I certainly understand. PENNDOT has
outdone themselves with the temporary lane relocations. I know you do not want
to try and drive that thing around the square in either Chambersburg or
Waynesboro.

Thanks and let us know when she moves.

Yesterday 9-8 WM7470(CSX8421) was trailing unit on Q703 (the emerald express).
I got to see her role passed me sitting at the Savage MARC station around
6:15pm. Any chance they will run the same power on the return train tomorrow?
