Randall Stephen posted this poem on the guest book section of Gregs website, and
I decided to make it into a video. Hope I did it justice.

In May of this year we drove by this branch on the way to/from Santa Fe. This
branch leaves the BNSF (former Santa Fe) Raton Pass line in northeast New
Mexico.

At the time, it was used for storage of baretable cars (which are used to haul
containers). The track looked like it was in use at the US 64 grade crossing
near Colfax.

I saw on a post on another board that these cars have all been removed within
the past couple weeks. Evidently BNSF has no more freight customers on this
branch, or the Raton Pass main line between Lamy, New Mexico (junction for the
Santa Fe Southern) and Trinidad, Colorado.

In September, we drove past East St. Johnsbury, in northern Vermont. The track
of the former SJ&LC (St Johnsbury & Lake Champlain) is still intact there, with
grade crossing signals in place.

The SPV atlas I have (1999) shows the line as 'active', but it wasn't at the
time we saw it. The right-of-way now resembles a wild tree farm, with tall
trees growing between the rails for some distance. Unfortunately, I did not
have time to get a picture.

Maybe this line is rail-banked, in the hopes that a new operator will come along
to bring rail service back. It would take a lot of clean-up work to get this
line back in service.

I believe the State of New Mexico now owns that whole Raton line - they do own
the part north and south of ABQ - for the purpose of eventually providing (with
the state of CO) service to Denver. I don't know if this explains the removal
of the BNSF cars there.

I think the ST+LC has been permanently Abandoned by the state with part of it
actually being ripped up farther west to be made into a snow-mobile trail. The
State ownes the whole right of way. The nail in the coffin of the STJ+LC was the
closing of the MEC Mountain Division to frieght because the STJ+LC was a western
"extension" of the line for through frieght but deregulation and the end of the
mountain division as a frieght route in 1983-84 turned the Saint J into a
regular "shortline" which continued to serve online customers and had a tourist
train as well. The last "active" owner of the line was CSF Aqusitions (Clyde S.
Forbes) which seemed to pull out of all of his NH + VT RR's in the later 90's.
The state never found another operator that suited thier needs and the
snowmobile crew seemed to have won out.

Just wanted to take a minute and introduce myself to the Group. I live in
Redding California and travel all over Northern California for work. And I
couldn't help but notice that there are very few photos of abandoned railways
from the north state. I would like to remedy that, I already have shots of the
bridge that was used in "Stand By Me" There are no rails left, just the bridge,
and of an old tunnel that is at the bottom of Shasta Lake, last year the lake
was so low many artifacts were above water for only the second time since the
lake was filled in the 40s. I've seen many other abandoned tracks and plan to
get some shots of them in future trips. Including portions of the Quincy
Railroad, Much of which is now abandoned, the McCloud River Dinner train which
will become abandoned the 1st of January, unless someone steps up to purchase
it. And then there is the Northwester Pacific Railroad, which has been inactive
for several years, but has good news in it's future, service is being
reestablished from Willits to Schellville, California, (a little over 100
miles).

If there is any interest in photos of this area, please let me know.

Interesting. Where is the "Stand By Me" bridge, or what line was it on? I
always thought it was in Oregon, although it was in Maine in the book.
Can I assume that the right-of-way in Shasta Lake was replaced by a higher line
relocation on the SP main line?
When Lake Fontana is low, from the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad on the line
relocation, you can see the roadbed of Southern's original Murphy branch that
used to run down one fork of the lake and back up another fork, just past Bryson
City, NC. From the junction of the forks (Bushnell), a shortline once continued
downstream but was not rebuilt after Fontana Dam was constructed. This
shortline would have become part of a mainline through the Smokies had a short
segment (about 15 miles) between Fontana, NC, and Calderwood, TN, ever been
built along the Little Tennessee River.

The "Stand By Me" Bridge was part of the McCloud Railway, same as the
McCloud River dinner train runs on, just on a portion of the route that is
already abandoned.

Hello Dave.

This is Drew. Until a few months ago, I lived up in the Bay Area. When I
travelled as part of my job, it would give me a chance to photograph the
abandoned rail system up in Marin and Sonoma along with the various old things
around the bay. However, after a visit to the historical society in San Rafael,
I discovered a huge amount of abandoned ROW's north of SF. A lot of old logging
and mining railroads up along the coast in between Point Reyes and Fort Bragg
for example. However, getting up there looks to be a remote chance. If I get the
chance, would you like to collaborate?

My name is Lee Tamn and my husband Mike, and I, operate the North Pemberton
RR Station Museum and Rail Trail in Pemberton, NJ. We were recently donated
a completely restored box car to add to our outside display of train cars.
That is wonderful but we have to pay someone to move it from PA to our
museum by the end of this month or it will be scrapped. I have written many
letters of solicitation to raise the $11,000.00 it's going to cost to get it
here. I would appreciate any advice you could give me about this situation.
Our organization, the Pemberton Twp. Historic Trust, is an all volunteer,
non-profit, 501 (C)(3) organization. I will give you more info if you think
you could be of help. The RR Station was built in 1891 after a fire
consumed the original building. By the 1960's it was ready to fall down so
we restored the building 10 years ago. Since then, we have also restored
the Section house, acquired several cabooses, a tank car, a GE Switch
Engine from Roebling, and we even have the original double outhouse that was
found in a Pemberton farm field. This is the first time we were ever given
a short time to raise the funds necessary to save this car but we are
dealing with a hostile landlord who will definitely scrap this boxcar if we
can't get it out of there by January 1st. Please email me if you can help.

Lee,

An article in a few years back in Locomotive & Railway Preservation Magazine
described a less expensive way to move rail cars.  Basically, the concept
involved  jacking up the car, rolling the trucks out from under it and
temporarily mounting a disconnected truck trailer wheel set with brake lines
under one end.  Then temporarily pulling the draw bar off the other end and
welding a trailer hitch pin on the frame and having a semi haul it off.  A
standard flatbed tractor trailer rig can haul the trucks and draw bar to your
museum.

Lee,

Congratulations on getting another car for your museum.  Two years ago I was
given the same opportunity with an old NCStL bay window caboose.  The county
wanted it out of there by Jan 1st, just like you.  Hey, a caboose for a buck -
when else would I get the opportunity?  It was now or never,  but what to do?

I used a credit card...

Priceless?   Well, maybe not - but it at least saved the caboose from the
scrappers torch.

Some things to note with my move.

Watch the weather!  My credit card bill cost about the same, $10,000 but about
$3000 of that was because the crane got stuck in the ground at the load site.
It had rained several days before but, like you, it was a move it or lose it
scenario.  Five hours stuck in the mud at $250 an hour for the crane, $75 for
the truck, and another $250 an hour or so for the wrecker truck which couldnt
pull it out until more help arrived. Maybe the crane company should have eaten
it but what did I know?  Maybe they took me for what they could.  I ended up
storing the caboose on the crane company lot until later and had it off loaded
here in July, when the ground was dry as a desert!

Anyway, as a last resort, the evil credit card may be of help.  It sure beats
letting it be scrapped.  Master the possibilities indeed.

only $7000 left to pay - then Im turning back on the HEAT in here! brrrr
(it should be much less than that by now but that is for another yahoogroup
discussion...)

Thank You,

Lee

It would help to know more about the boxcar and why it is worthy of
preservation. There are a great many under-funded railroad history projects.
What is special about this one and why does this boxcar merit our support?

This is a fully restored unit and similar cars were used in this area
(Pemberton, Fort Dix, McGuire AFB. ) and it's absolutely the best one so far
that has been made available to us. Please give us a call at 609-784-8721
or email your phone number so we can call you and discuss this further.

What's it restored for? Painted how? What makes it special besides the fact they
may have been used in the area? How old is it? Rather than fielding a bunch of
phone calls, give us a run down of it. So far I haven't heard anything about it
that warrants me opening up my wallet to help. It seems kind of funny in fact...
