My original post may have appeared glib Simon, it's often my manner, but I
do strongly believe that smaller companies should operate in a manner that
reflects their lesser overheads leaving the consumer the option of shopping
around. Also I'm sorry if you're riled into defending RFS in particular, I
know you are of long standing with them, I merely plucked them out as the
first place I knew the price listed for convenience.

But the simple facts are that It is simply crippling to increase your gear
to the size it needs to be just to run a basic operation, let alone when
parts of it become obsolete and it has been a rough year, which can happen
at any point in your career, recessions not withstanding. Precious few
sound people regularly have their hand in commercials and big budget
features that will pay decent rates for your day AND your gear too and the
rest are finding their overall rates pushed down to paltry all-in throat
cutting levels. Where does the money for demanded by clients upgrades come
from now? The thin corduroy line hasn't been able to hold rates up.

So then Simon, and especially with that in mind, do you actually mean to
suggest that price fixing in our industry is therefore all that is
permissible? I should truly hope not and therefore anyone not offering
their perhaps only desirable item (sorry for the swathing generalisation Mr
Muir) for below the standard corporate rate would be foolhardy to say the
very least. How else are you going to attract customers to help pay for the
gear you've been cornered in to buying to help continue to earn your honest
and ever-harder to make crust?

I feel that you're being more than a little harsh on the smaller operator.

Warm regards,

Julian

Well I'm sorry to have caused such consternation gentlemen

but I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick. My thinking would

be more towards the lower running costs that a sole trader has to benefit

from can be passed on. Nigel has always had a quite mighty stock to draw

from and at a considerable outlay cost to him. If I were to need to flesh

out my own kit whilst on a long drama then I would certainly be going to him

or Ian Coles now at Visual Impact or Simon Bishop, whomever, depending on my

needs and of course using the benefit of well stocked spares that a large

company has for when gear goes down mid-shoot.

However, if I needed a single item that could be garnered

from a sole trader soundman, such as myself, for an invariably slightly

reduced rate then that is practical for both the struggling sole trader

trying to offset hefty gear upgrade costs and the hirer.

The noted lighting company fiascos of the last few years are

certainly testament to how to make a muck of it but it was undercutting on a

grand scale, i.e. total department budgets. That mounts up. One man

renting out his own recorder to a few trusted sources, maybe 5 times a year

if he's really lucky, wont dent the industry. I must ask you, do you never

lend some gear to a soundman mate in need or to a keen former boom op making

a go of it for cut rate or dare I say even gratis? Shame on you if you

don't.

With production often finding sound an over-expensive

bother, I would have thought that a little support of our brethren would be

in order, and that's why I asked his whereabouts coupled with anything that

helps me not have to lose 3 hours round trip to Richmond or Teddington and

back would be a blessing. Come on gentlemen, be fair here, isn't mutual

support what the likes of AMPS and the IBS are for?

Warm regards,

Julian

I'm in total agreement with you Simon!

Nigel at Richmond will have worked out how much to charge for his

Nagra IV hire that will allow for capital replacement, servicing etc.

We've seen what happens to lighting companies undercutting each

never found any recorder which is not suitable for wireless mic receiver
output , which on some sets are 100% and some only 80%:-))
if you need eq that's another story , but frankly for voice recording i
guess they will be more then ok if i consider them making at least in the
same level as hdp-2 .
the posts look small - big mistake , very big mistake :-)

I'm in total agreement with you Simon!

Nigel at Richmond will have worked out how much to charge for his
Nagra IV hire that will allow for capital replacement, servicing etc.

We've seen what happens to lighting companies undercutting each
other, they were stupid and have suffered.

Shouldn't think the mic pre-amp would be up to much, but it'll be well
worth a closer look for line level sources like an AD149 mix and
direct outs.

Best Wishes,

John Rodda.

I very rarely post here even when i am exceptionally perplexed, but this last
commentreally does demonstrate the lack of thought and care for the future of
our industry.
Julian you should be ashamed of yourself.I am just hoping that the comment was
tongue in cheek, but even if it was, talk of undercutting should never be made
even in jest, especially undercutting a rental house that have supported many
industry professionals over the last 30 years.
I am appalled.

The Tascam portable recorders build quality wasn't ever exactly outstanding
as I remember.
Will it stand up to baggage handlers?

Gee , sounds like Monti Piton stile question :-)
i guess it makes "ping" for less , much less .
it also make more people desire to work as sound recordists and probably
will take down your package rentals money as well
. beside that it records 10 tracks , runs on np-1 or external power and
probably will be quit reliable as most of the Tascam DA-S i worked with in
the last 20 years.

You call it techflex over there, we call it braided polyester sleeve and for
some reason it's comparatively dirt cheap over here.

Subject: Advice about Location Recorders & Mics?
richard_lipm...

Dear All,

I am considering purchasing location sound recorder equipment for myself that is
simple to use for documentaries and film. I have a few questions:

- Sound Devices 702 T or Nagra VI - anyone have any experience they could share
with regards to the performance , usage and of course sound quality of these
recorders (no mixers will be used on field)

- Can anyone recommend training dvd or books for location sound?

- Any suggestions for a mic for indoor and outdoor usage (rain, sun, humid) e.g.
Schoeps CMIT 5U or Sennheiser 60?

Thanks very much.

Richard

   Dear All,

i very rarely post messages but i feel it's really important to try to go the
meeting on
   Thursday.

There are lots of topics that need discussing and this is an ideal time to air
opinions, grievances and generally get feed back from your peers over
issues regarding working conditions (i.e. rates etc) for Sound Crews working
in the U.K.

In my opinion it is a rather quiet time in U.K. film production at the
moment,and feels like
an ideal time to call a meeting for maiximum attendance.

I do hope our peers who work in the T.V. sector can make the meeting too.

To show your support for the meeting please post here if you think you may be
able to
   attend.

   I'll start-

   Simon Hayes will be there.

Date: Thursday the 10th of July 2008
   Time: 1900 gather, 1930 start
   Location: Kodak Room, NFTS, Beaconsfield

In my opinion it is a rather quiet time in U.K. film production at the

an ideal time to call a meeting for maiximum attendance.

I do hope our peers who work in the T.V. sector can make the meeting too.
