Can anyone tell me anything about this wood cabinet table radio or the
maker?

It's a 4 tube (01A's) battery operated broadcast receiver with 9 - yes, 9
- controls on the black front panel for 3 condensers, a variometer, and 4
rheostats. It has 4 phone jacks on the right side; one is not connected,
the others connect to the detector and first and second audio stages.
Binding posts for aerial, ground and 6 battery connections (most labeled
B+) line the left side. Unfortunately it shows signs of having been
modified or parts pirated and replaced, and wires are loose so I haven't
yet figured out the circuit. It appears to date to about 1922-1925.

A label shows that it was made by Miller Radio and Electric Works, 4103
8th Ave. South, Seattle, WA. I've looked thru Seattle telephone books
from 1920 to 1930 and a few other sources without result. . The building
now at that address looks newer than 1920's but I inquired anyway - the
employees and manager gave me the "who is this old fool?" look.

I've been in the Seattle area since 1972 so the history of this radio
and the maker is of interest to me. Thanks for any help,

Pete Petersen

The Swap Meet starts as soon as the Museum opens at 9am. It will be in the

Ahhh....Spring is in the air and it is time to look over
our junk boxes as we prepare for the season of the ritual
exchange of assets through flea markets. While you are
pondering what to keep, what to toss and what to try
to sell, would you also look for something for me?

I am looking for an oddball piece of amateur radio
equipment--the Vari-X dual crystal oscillator/exciter
made by Bliley Electric Company in the late 1940s or
early 1950s. I am sure not many were sold, if any, so
this request is a shot in the dark. If you have one in
your junk box, in your collection or have a friend who has one,
I would be delighted to talk to you.

For those that do not know what this unit looks like,
please look at an old advertisement at
http://www.Bliley.net/XTAL/Vari-X/Vari-X.html.

Thanks for your help.

Lowfers,

SAQ will be on the air again on July 1. I once asked one
of their people why they didn't do this in the dead of
winter when we'd have a better chance of hearing them in
America. I was told the power company would'nt let them
operate during the heating season! This is not an easy
catch, but it is one of the last places to hear Morse on
VLF, and certainly the last Alexanderson alternator in
service. Check the English version of their website at:

Hi Gang, I got question from Joel and thought
I pass the answer (such as it is) along to all of you...

Well it's like this, 9 AM is the "legal" starting time
since the museum doesn't "officially" open until then.
BUT, it seems folks always find a way in early and
it's usually gets going around 8 AM.
Unlike our Annual Conference in Charlotte,
we do not enforce the starting time at any of
the Saturday only swap meets.
It's just a fact of radio collecting that the folks
that are really serious will get there early and those
that aren't will show up later and wonder where all the
good stuff is. It sold in the first ten minutes...

It looks like this is going to another good event,
I've had a lot of inquires about.

See ya there.

drmc@...

I am restoring a Philco 38-40, an interesting dual voltage set (6
volts DC and 110 volts AC - switchable). If anyone one has an
ORIGINAL set lying around, I have some questions:

1. How were the 6 volt DC power leads terminated (battery clips?)
Someone removed the DC power leads from the set, so I have
no clue as to what the originals looked like.
2. Was there an in-line fuse in the 6-volt lead? One other
6-volt set in my collection has one - looks like the type
used on old 6-volt auto radios - metal case.
3. There are two grommets on the back, one larger than the other.
Which one was for the 6-volt leads and which for the 120 volt
AC cord? I'm guessing that the larger one was for the 6-volt.
4. Can anyone describe the pilot light assembly? Did it have
a hood, lens, or reflector? The socket in mine has been
changed out - just a bare bulb in a bayonet socket.

The set has been restored and works, but the vibrator needs to be
replaced (too cheap to buy a solid state replacement). But since
it works, I think I will leave it alone (had to 'operate' on it
and clean the contacts to get it going).

Thanks,
Dave McClellan

Hi Gang,

I've decided to mount my BC-779-A receiver
in a rack and now I find that the power supply
is missing the front rack mount panel and the
dust cover.
This is for the RA-94-A power supply.

My receiver is OD green but it will have to be repainted
so it doesn't matter what color the power supply panel is.

Does anyone out there have an extra one laying around?
Or maybe a junker supply you'd be willing to take one
off of?

Beware!

Ye who enter the depths of the inner sanctum beware!
For it is rumored to be the lair of a well known recording
artist from long ago. It is advised to come well prepared
with large bags of Burger-King Cheese Whoppers, Fries
and Coca-Cola. If challenged by a voice from the darkness,
you should immediately start singing "Hound Dog."

In the unlikely event you are not challenged, then Ron and
Bob will assist you in the proper disposal of the contents
from the bags.

Seriously, take bottled water and drink frequently. You'd be
surprised how much water your body will loose running to and fro
bringing out those wonderful treasurers. And to those of us who
are not watching our weight (too many trips to the Burger-King?)
pace yourself, don't over do it. Take time to catch your breath.

Have fun, wish I was there!

What: Electronic goodie grab.

Where: Radio station WBT Transmitter building basement.
Located on Nations Ford Rd. Charlotte, NC.

When: Saturday, June 2nd at 11AM,

What: Tons of electronic goodies. The basement is
literally full of old and not so old electronic
stuff that has been stored there, some of it for
           60+ years.

Who: WBT has offered this treasure trove to the
Carolinas Chapter of the Antique Wireless Association.
We know that there's a lot more there than we
can even haul off so we have also invited
other collectors and the local ham radio
           community to share the goodies.

How's it going to work?
OK here's the deal, they want the junk (goodies)
cleaned out of the basement, they have brought in
a large dumpster that is going to get it if we don't haul
it off. When we get there we'll go in to the basement
and start picking up the stuff and carrying it out,
IF you want it, take it to your car (van, truck, etc.).
If you don't want it, drop it in the dumpster and go back
and get something else. The point is to help clean out
the basement.

There will be folks there from the station to make sure
no one starts taking apart the 50,000 watt transmitter,
so leave your tools at home.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

73,

Ron

Tell them to fire up the transmitter...that will keep probing tools at bay.

Robert -

Air King models 770 to 838 are in Vol. 9 . . . but there's no 780 listed.
(There must be something similar, of course.)

Can't tell you anything intelligent about the Emerson.

It's just one week till the "Goodie Grab"
at the WBT transmitter site.
I was just wondering who is planning to be there?
I thought we might fill a cooler full of cold drinks
just in case it's blazing hot that day.

Also I'm thinking about opening the display room
for any of you that would like to stop by for
a visit while you're here. If you haven't been
here in a while, there's lots of new "stuff" to
look at.
It's about a 30 min. drive from the WBT to my house, about 20 miles SE of
Charlotte.
If anyone's interested I'll have maps with me on Saturday.

73,

Ron

Brian, John and everyone else,

The answer to the first questions I got,
No, there is no list of the "stuff" in the
basement, and Yes, I have been there.

There is a ton of misc. electronic "stuff"
in the basement of the WBT transmitter
that has been piling up for 60+ years.
I can't even guess what might be buried under
it all.

WBT management wants the space for storage
so the "stuff" has to go.
I don't think they expect us to sweep it clean
but it would be nice to get as much out as possible since they were nice
enough to allow us to pick thru the goodies.

Is it worth your time to drive from where ever?
That's up to you, I make no promises as to what you'll find. But I tell you
one thing, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Ron

This transmitter was made in 1960 and was used until being placed in
storage in 1968 where it remained until recently. It looks almost like
new. The original 32 page instruction manual is included.

The front panel has three scratches by the crystal socket and one by the
band switch. One knob has been replaced - it's not like the others but a
fairly good match. The cabinet finish is very good with some scuff marks
and minor scratches; in one place the top is bowed down about 1/8" as if
something heavy was set on it. I slid the chassis most of the way out of
the case and it looks very clean, no rust, everything is intact and
appears original. Batting placed around the tubes in 1968 is still in
place. One OA2 is missing so I'll include a new one.

At first I thought I might put it on the air but I've had no experience
with this item and Globe enthusiasts will probably prefer me keeping my
hands off it and my soldering iron out of it. Therefore it will be sold
as is. Several months ago when I heard this might become available I
asked these groups for an estimate of it's value and received answers
covering a range of $350 to $600 depending on the usual variables. We'll
split the difference and ask $475 plus shipping.

It weighs 105# (probably 125# crated). The best plan would be for pickup
at my home in Bellevue, WA, or I could meet someone halfway within a 200
mile radius. Otherwise I'll crate it and ship as you instruct.

I forgot to mention one thing - one of the two 115VAC accessory outlets
is missing from the back of the chassis.

I got a call today from a guy that bought a Bestone model V-60, 5 tube
battery set at the Charlotte meet.
He's looking for a schematic for it.
The seller set him for a Bestone V-60,
but it's for a 4 tube set.
I can't find anything in Riders or anywhere else.
One problem he thinks he has is that it has no audio transformers and
doesn't seem to have a place for them.
Could it be an RC coupled set?
I have not seen it yet, he's planning to bring it to my house this week so
I can have a look see.
It would be great to have a good diagram.

Thanks for any help you can give.
