Ted...

The Woodcliffe Lodge up in nearby Victor, N.Y., is an absolutely FABULOUS
place to stay for something just over $100.00 (ask for the AAA
discount/corporate rates)...

My wife & I indulge ourselves every year therein, on the occasion of the AWA
Spring Meet...fabulous! Really something to look forward to every year.

Hi Ted

well it only looks about 12 miles away but how/where do you park at the
Marriot.

they are only allowing those folks living there to park and I believe are
running shuttle busses to
other local motels. Which would be OK except the problem of getting gear
to the auctions
is the AWA shuttling to your motel ??

Hi Ted,

We're going to call back and give it another try. I'll see how it comes out.

You're correct about where we have our Spring Meet. It couldn't get any
better.
They knocked off 1 nights stay on my bill because they had closed out my key
card 1 day early
and I had to get it reprogrammed. That wasn't any problem on my part and I
didn't mind
walking around to the desk to get it taken care out.

So when I checked out I noted to them that they had shorted 1 nights stay on
my bill. "No, Mr. Cromer,
that's for the inconvenience we caused you on your key card." Talk about
"Southern Hospitality"

I think that this type of surroundings is what gives us the edge at our meet
along with the nice people that put it on.

It's good that they offered to help in your case. How many places would have
even offered ?

73,
Gerald K4NHN

Gee, are we talking about the same hotel? The Sheraton Airport Plaza on
Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte?

The year before last, they must have been having some kind of problem with
their magnetic key card programmer. I had to return to the front desk
several times (three, as I recall) to get a new key after the old one
stopped working. Each time I was met with indifferent shrugs from the desk
clerk as he or she reluctantly programmed a new key, a service I shouldn't
have needed in the first place. When I checked out, I paid full price for
every night's stay, too.

The Spring Meet is the greatest; I mean no disrespect towards it. It's just
that I never get anything but grief from hotels, no matter what region of
the country they're located in.

Hello All!

I just received some disturbing, but not surprising news via the weekly
ARRL web newsletter. On July 1st of this year the BBC World Service will
cease shortwave transmissions in English to North America, Australia and
New Zealand. Citing growing use of domestic FM station reception of
their programs in this country, plus the growing use of satellites and
the Internet to receive their programming, the BBC have decided to
terminate these shortwave broadcasts and in the process save around
$700,000 a year in operating costs.
Thirty years ago this year I became an avid shortwave listener, a young
kid just entering junior high school who used his best friends'
Knight-kit shortwave radio to listen to the world, and the first
shortwave station I remember listening to was the BBC World Service. The
first shortwave QSL card I ever got was from the BBC.
As this date approaches I intend to listen one last time to one of
those English broadcasts with the sole purpose of creating a reception
report to send in for one last "over the air" QSL card. I think it would
be a good idea for someone to find out the time and frequency of the
very last transmission and make a digital recording of it for the AWA
archives. If this is done, might I suggest that at the end of the last
transmission, when that carrier suddenly leaves the air, that the
recording continue for one minute following the end of transmission,
recording nothing but the remaining static for a nice dramatic touch.
This was bound to happen, what with the advent of the Internet and the
expansion of their BBC America service. On the bright side for ham radio
operators, this may be an indication that it may become a little easier
to argue at the upcoming international telecommunication conferences for
exclusive worldwide rights to the 40 meter band. I've noticed in the
past couple of years that there are much fewer carriers on 40 meters at
night than I remember 25 and 30 years ago.

Gerald--

I was surprised to hear about your wife's problem. Our conference
information in the current OTB shows that the special rates ($92 single $94
double) are available through August 27. I've never heard of anyone being
refused within this window of opportunity. And it certainly would be
ludicrous for people to be refused this early.

I just got off the phone with the reservations clerk at the Marriott. She
said that not only were the rooms still available, she had just booked one.
However, the rates are available only for bookings from Sept 3 to Sept 9.
It might be that your wife wanted to add on days outside this window--which
would then be regular rate.

Whatever the source of the misunderstanding was, it appears that you will be
able to get a reservation at the preferred rate if you try again.

To my friends,

(I'm sorry if you receive this twice, I seem to be having a problem with my
Email today.)

    I received this message from Dave, AA1A, [ daveaa1a@... ] from
Marshfield, MA. He is trying to save one of the last Coast Guard stations
from being forever lost. He is attending a town meeting on Monday night
and needs some support. Please read his message and do what ever you

He has a small web site started with photos of the station. It sure
would make a great ham station and radio museum.

The U.S. Coast Guard Radio Station, NMF, Marshfield, Mass. was recently
closed and has passed into the care of the Town of Marshfield. Its use will
be discussed this Monday eve at the Board of Selectmen meeting. It is hoped
that as many interested parties will respond and see to it that we keep our
heritage by securing some space within the property to set up an Amateur
Radio Station, Museum items, records and archives and whatever volunteer
efforts will yield.

I plan to make notice to the board that the 'Friends of ComSta Boston' will
be interested in setting up shop at the retired station with Radio
Communncations equipment that will be operating and available to the public
at NO expense to the town. Since this is an idea expressed to me only
yesterday, I would like to have a show of hands from anyone interested in
this project.

We have a small interim web page @
http://www.radiocom.net/History/index5.htm but we intend to break it out
into it's own site.

Recommendations, steering, ideas, support and participation by as many who
may be interested will be the indication that WE are headed in the right
direction... Our Radio history in this town is all but forgotten. In 1906
Reg Fessenden made the worlds FIRST radio broadcast and produced 500

keep these events in the public eye.

Marc,
Thanks for checking into this.

I had the wife call back today and she talked to Laura and she took the
reservations with no problem.
The dates were within the window. She didn't have any trouble at all.

2 days ago she talked with Marsha. [I believe] and she said right quick,
with no special requests on our part, that all the $94 rooms were gone,
would you like our $150 room. The XYL did spell out that she was talking
about the AWA, old radio show and gave the dates.

Anyway, they are made now and we are set to come. We always try and make
plans very early to come so we don't get left out of the fun.

Thanks,
Gerald Cromer K4NHN

Howdy,

I just acquired a Gonset GSB-100 xmtr at the Rochester, NY hamfest, and
a schematic would greatly facilitate bringing it to back to life.

Is there anyone out there who would be kind enough to scan it and fire
me off a JPG (or other common format) file?

73 and thanks in advance,

OK all you old time broadcasting guys,
I need some help IDing a piece I got at the
WBT Electronic Goodie Grab yesterday.
Use this URL to see a photo of it,

Anyone know what vintage it is?
How about power handling capacity?

Thanks, Ron

Ron -

Your rotary variable inductor is of the style used for *generations* in
broadcast-antenna phasing units and impedance-matching applications. Since
WBT is directional at night, this coil could easily have been used in a
phaser, but could also have been used to tune out a bit of capacitive
reactance at the tower base, directional or not.

Most of these inductors use clamp-on taps to change the inductance, rather
than continuous rotation, so this one is a bit unusual. Because each phaser
is essentially a custom job, the coils appear in a wide variety of sizes and
inductances. This one is also more burly than usual; most of 'em just use
edge-wound copper ribbon.

It's hard to SWAG a power-handling capacity, because the critical parameter
is amps, not kilowatts; however, this one could easily have appeared in a
50-kW installation like WBT. The physical design is timeless, but the
antiquish design of the knob suggests '30s-'40s. (Anybody know when WBT
raised power and went directional at night?)

Now, how about an after-action report on the clean-out event? (!)

I'll defer to Ron for the "official" after-action report regarding the
clean out of the WBT basement Saturday. But to get things started, I
wanted to let everyone know it was a complete success.

WBT has a special place in the hearts of all AWA members in and around
Charlotte, NC. We were especially pleased when the station approached
the Carolinas Chapter of the AWA and offered us the opportunity to
"excavate" the basement of the original (1928) transmitter building which
had, over the past 60 or more years, become the station's junk pile.
With the help of the station's former Chief Engineer (also a club member)
we were able to identify items and place them in time and usage at the
station. We went about the task in a systematic manner to preserve and
document the scene before opening the site to others for help in
disposing of items that did not possess historical significance.

Among the items I was able to obtain are a pair of red warning globes
that were originally at the top of the antenna towers built in 1928. RCA
tubes - an 857B and an 892R (heavy with black cooling fins) found there
way to my vehicle. These are of later vintage, but very displayable.
Several antique documents regarding tube stockage levels and inventories
also came into my possession.

Most of the historically important items (several van loads) are now the
property of the CCAWA. Among these are four large inductor coils
(probably four feet diameter that were used with the old flat-top antenna
Ca. 1928-late 1930's). These items are now in storage awaiting our being
able to establish a museum.

This was a unique opportunity. WBT celebrates its 80th birthday next
year, having gone on the air in April, 1922. We expect to feature this
pioneer station's story in some manner during the Spring Meet in the
Carolinas in March, 2002.

I'll shut up now and give Ron an opportunity to share with you his take
on the event and to publicize other items obtained as he sees fit.

Regards........Ted Miller

Well I guess after the prodding from Mr. Miller
I'll have to go ahead and do some sort of report
on the fun at WBT's transmitter site Saturday morning.

As happens with "most" antique radio events
there was a good crowd already there waiting
when I arrived. We had intended for our clubs
officers to be the first ones in to make sure
that we hadn't missed anything of historical interest
that should be saved for our "future" museum.
But instead of barring the door, we let everyone in
at the same time.
The best way to describe it is a "feeding frenzy".
Things happened so fast I didn't even have time
to think about taking any photos until it was
all over.

As Ted said the basement had been the stations
junk pile for over 60 years.
There's was lots and lots of misc. electronic
"stuff" that had just been tossed in a pile.
Lots of tape decks, cart machines & carts,
test equipment, large tubes (10-875B's, 3-892R's
& 1 852 (I think) 50kw water cooled tube)
there were 3 "On The Air" lighted signs,
stacks of old computers (that went in the dumpster)
there were 2 really nice RCA OP-5 remote amps from
the early 40's.

After all the goodies were loaded in our cars and vans
we then started toting the left over junk that no one
wanted to the dumpster. By 11AM the basement
was clean.

Unfortunately the station management had decided
that they wanted to keep all of the mics and all
of the records. Some of these may become available
at a later date.

I brought home several things that I found and
several things that some of my "friends" stashed
in my van when I wasn't looking.

With the exception of some locals that showed up
a little late and were disappointed that there
was noting left, EVERYONE else had a great time.

After the event of the guys from out of town
followed me home to visit my collection.

As they say, "A good time was had by all".

73,

Ron

I recently acquired a Montgomery Wards Airline "Teledial" Radio,
model 62-297 at the Charlotte meet. Just curious how the operator is
supposed to use the "Teledial" feature. A large 8" bakelite disc
looks like a telephone dial, with finger holes and inserted labels
with stations names like WBZ, and also POLICE etc. Can the dial
actually be used to (approximately) tune the radio, or is this just a
gimmick? If it can be used, I suppose one would place a finger in
one of the holes containing a label for the station you want and then
turn the dial until the hole lines up with the dial pointer? Just
guessing. There is also a normal tuning control that turns the wheel
(the wheel moves almost 360 degrees while the tuning cap turns 180
degrees). There is also a small knob at the bottom center that is
spring loaded. One can push in on this knob and cause the outside
back edge of the knob to engage the bakelite wheel - I suppose this
is some sort of "vernier" tuning. Again, just guessing.

Does anyone have an operating manual for this or a similar radio?
I'd really like to know how the radio was supposed to be operated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks,

I would like to do some tube trading. You probably got some you
would like to get rid of and a few that you need.

I need some 6K7's, 6J5's, 6F8,s, 6K6's, and even 5Z3's. I really do
not care if they are new or used.

I got gobs of 6AU6's that are used, but good. I will make sure of
that. I also have a gob of 5654/6AK5W's that are new.

If you've got a moment, click on the below and see if you can help ID
a receiver I recently purchased. It was advertised as a homebrew rig, but
the quality of construction and some preliminary ID's by John Dilks has
me questioning that.

http://www.old-radios.com/radios.html

Construction is first rate. All sockets are ceramic, all metalwork is radiused
and deburred. Edges on the chassis are rolled under...if it's NOT factory
made, it was built by a master craftsman.

Given the small variable caps , I'd have to believe that this was ham band
only?

Any hints greatly appreciated... hope the pictures post ok...

In my humble opinion it is a home brew. Very nicely made, no question about
that. But I would say it is home made or was made at some factory as a piece
of test equipment. 73 - Mike

Hmmm . . . I agree. Danged nice work for a homebrew, but some of us are
guilty of doing such work when given the resources at our workplace to
construct stuff as part of our jobs or after hours for personal use. Maybe
this is the case?

Maybe a prototype of a new rx design from some manufacturer Mike? High end
of HF to VHF range it seems. Maybe early FM broadcast rx (old pre-war FM
band)? I see a 6H6 in one of the photos. Is it hooked-up as a typical AM
detector or FM ratio det. or discriminator? The IF cans look store-bought
-notice the label in one of the shots? Lessee, are those Millers? What's
the p/n on them? Lots of "maybes". John, get out your pad of paper, tube
base diagrams and a pencil and get to work! :-)

Would be quite interesting to backtrack the history on this thing I think.

I'll go out on a limb and agree that it is a home brew RX. I doubt
it's a Harvey (as in Harvey-Wells) as we have Harvey-Wells proto-
types (TBS-50, etc) in the museum and they don't look at all like this
construction. We also have a variety of home brew items that were
equal or better in construction than your items. Home brewing was
much more prevalent in the 30's and 40's and many took a lot of
pride and did really good work. Access to a machine shop helped
a bunch, too.

Hi Ed,

Take a look at this site:
http://www.swedeart.com/harvey/models/1932/19321279-sss.jpg

(above is all one link)

It shows the Hendricks & Harvey - model Single Signal
Receiver from 1932, Hartford, CT. The "Harvey" is the
same Harvey and the receiver has a strong resemblance to
the one John has, though a few years earlier. Note, in
the ad it states they were also custom made.

When I made my guess to John, was just after the Ebay
sale ended, and I was working from the Ebay photos,
which were not as clear as John's.

Does the museum have this early receiver? I don't know
of any existing.
