Subject: Giving and Taking Design Criticism Web short course May 27th
rebeccawb

Fellow agile folk-
I wanted to invite you to attend a one hour web-based training short course on  I am conducting in partnership with InfoQ next Wednesday, May 27th at 1 p.m.
The cost of the web course is $65 (InfoQ is experimenting with short courses and follow-on conversations...).
If you'd like to register, please follow this link: http://www.infoq.com/zones/Virtual-Training/giving-and-taking-design-criticism.

This short course was inspired by an Agile Open NW session I went to 3 years ago, when someone wondered how can agile developers settle disagreements/offer others advice? Giving (and taking) constructive criticism is hard whether you work in a collaborative team environment or not. Asking for advice can be difficult, too. We're supposed to be collaborative, but what happens when we disagree or see some thing? Should we just make sure that our "code wins the argument" or is there a way to intelligently discuss various merits/disadvantages of ideas?

The cost of this t course is $65. I get only a small fee for my talk-based on the number of people who register. But I'm happy to give this talk because I want to get the word out: You can ask for and offer constructive criticism. You just have to know how to handle it.

If you do sign up for the course (and read this announcement), please send me an email. I promise to personally answer questions you may have as you try out these ideas.

Please pass along this announcement to others who  might be interested.

Giving and Taking Design Criticism, short course May 27, 2009 1 p.m.

Cost: $65

Have you ever engaged in a design review where people didn't play fair? Do you have trouble giving design advice that sticks? An effective software developer or designer needs to be skilled at giving, asking for, and reacting appropriately to criticism. This talk explores how to engage in effective design conversations and exchange constructive criticism. This can be difficult when people don't share a common understanding or bring inappropriate baggage from past experiences to new situations. So we'll not only talk about how to effectively present design ideas, but also explain some biases and faulty reasoning that underlie common reactions people have to new information and how to overcome them.

Thanks,
Rebecca

Folks-
I have several unused copies of the GOF Design Patterns books and Alistair Cockburn's Writing Effective Use Cases to give away. First come first served. They are leftovers from courses I teach on use cases and responsibility-driven design...it's summertime and time to clean the bookshelves.

If you are interested in adding one of these books to your personal or corporate library...let me know.

I'm interested in giving these away to people who would actually like to have a copy, expect they'd use it, and don't want to sell them to Powell's.

Free is a good price.

Let me know if you are interested.

Cheers,
Rebecca

Hey all,

I heard Brian give his keynote at the Agile Roots conference this morning. It
was fabulous, inspiring, provocative, and thoughtful. If you can find any way to
make this XPDX meeting, you'll be glad you did. I'm planning to listen to it
again!

He said he's even going to _improve_ the presentation for us tomorrow night. And
you'll get a nifty sticker as a bonus.

Brian's talk at Agile Roots was fabulous. My only complaint was that it was too short. Do come.

I just wanted to second this. I've been coaching these folks in adopting XP/Agile for over four months and they're as agile as it gets. Last night, they packaged and released their software to six servers with a single ten-minute automated Rake script. Highly self-organizing team (they're currently defining their own job titles, roles/responsibilities, and evaluation process), automated tests, ten-minute build, continuous integration, on-site customers (and lots of input from whole team into product direction), brand new entrepreneurial project getting ready to spin up, highly profitable and growing company.

Downside is that they're in Salem and they have a substantial legacy ColdFusion project they work on as well. If you can handle that (or better yet--love it), and you want to be part of an Agile team that's really agile, this is a great opportunity.

In addition to the coach position, we're also looking for programmers of all skill levels to join the team. If you're not qualified to be an XP/Agile coach (and I have to warn you, we're looking for very high levels of competence for that job), you might be a good fit for the programmer position. Extra credit for people with awesome OO design, TDD, and refactoring skills. Comfort with collective ownership, pairing, and shared workspace a must.

Announcing Agile Open Northwest 2010! This Agile Open Space event will
be
held February 9th and 10th, 2010, in the Seattle Center Northwest Rooms.
Please see http://www.agileopennorthwest.org for registration
information
and further details.

We invite you to our fourth annual Agile Open Northwest conference.
Alternating each year between Portland and Seattle, AONW conferences
bring
together practicing members of the Northwest Agile communities to
explore
the latest developments in agile software development. We held our third
annual event last year in Portland and enjoyed another great success.
Registration is $125.00 for both days, including light breakfast and
lunch.
This low-cost regional conference is a great opportunity to connect
with the
local agile community, experts and novices alike.

Please join us this year as we host 125 experienced, collaborative,
committed agile practitioners from the Northwest U.S. (and beyond) in
tackling the issues around our recurring theme "Agile for Real." As in
past
years, attendance is limited to a predetermined number in order retain
the
many advantages a small conference has to offer.

Here is a comment from a previous attendee:

"These two-day Agile Open Northwest conferences are an extremely good
value.
..[Y]ou learn directly from practitioners in the agile community what
works
and what doesn't. I attended the first two of these conferences, they
were
stunningly good... loads of practical, useful stuff and stimulating
discussions." -- Ian Savage, PNSQC Program Chair

More information can be found at http://www.agileopennorthwest.org. We
look
forward to seeing you there.

West side will work for me too. I'm mobile. :) And, when I'm in town,
I'm willing to run a carpool for those who have a hard time getting to
Washington County.

Subject: What does it mean to be agile?

Almost 10 years have passed since the Agile Manifesto and its supporting principles were authored. I'd like to see what we all feel it means to be "agile" in software development now that we've had a chance to mature. I'm running a survey to collect your input on this topic. The purpose of this survey is to assess how much the original principles relate to how agile teams operate in 2010 and what practices teams are using.

The survey can be found here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RBVYH2V

The survey will run until Saturday, 8 May 2010 and should only take 10 minutes or less to answer.

At the end of the survey, you can voluntarily provide your email address, and I will send you a link to a summary of the survey results when the survey is completed. My goal is to publish the results in a prominent publication such as IEEE Software.

Please forgive posts of this survey in multiple groups. Please forward this email to any of your colleagues so we can get a varied response.

Thanks for your participation!

Hello PDX Agilists,

Now that Kim has moved to a next chapter in her work/life, XPDX/
AgilePDX needs to self-organize leadership for handling opportunities
like the upcoming one with Matt H in July and Nancy V in September.

I'm very willing to help, and my travel schedule doesn't permit me to
do a good enough job of taking the sole lead on coordinating speakers
and meetings.

In any case, we don't need a single leader. As we've seen over the
past several years, when we rely on one person, we burn them out, then
we have no succession plan. We need a self-organizing group (7±2),
like a coordinating council or something, so the burden doesn't fall
too heavily on anyone and we keep our "truck factor number" as high as
possible. I'd be happy to serve with others. I won't/can't take it on
alone. Who of us will form a coordinating group of 5-9 people?

Here's what some systems thinkers have to say about it:

“As in Nature, if [XPDX/AgilePDX] is too inflexible, or stands still
too long, it will get eaten." James Burke, historian and author of
_The Day the Universe Changed_

"It is not necessary [for XPDX/AgilePDX] to change. Survival is not
mandatory." W. Edwards Deming

"We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if [XPDX/
AgilePDX] is to survive." Albert Einstein

In other words, we self-organize or we die.

Are there 4-6 others who can step into service as part of an active
coordinating group with me?

Hi all,

I haven't seen much follow-through about having fishbowl discussion at
our regular May meeting this month - which would be tomorrow/Wednesday
night, May 19. I don't think we ever finally decided on a place. There
isn't one listed on the calagator.org notice so I doubt many folks
will show up. http://calagator.org/events/1250458635

Since there doesn't seem to be a fishbowl event after all, may I
suggest that you consider joining me in attending CHIFOO this month?
Jared Spool is a fantastic speaker - he was a keynoter at SXSW this
year and a keynoter at Agile 2009 in Chicago. He's very knowledgeable
about all aspects of design and a very entertaining speaker as well.
(At Agile 2009, we got to see him dance to Beyonce's "All the Single
Ladies"!)

Hi all,

How many from our local Agile/XPDX & APLN-PDX community will attend Agile 2010
in Orlando Aug 9-13? Shall we organize a meetup while we're there?

I would like to get together with other Portland Metro area people at the
conference, if only just to see how big a crowd we could make. :)

Who else is going? Are you interested in a get together?

If so, let me know and I'll arrange something - maybe Monday night before or
after the icebreaker, or later in the week if that works better for folks.
Though I don't know what room I'm in yet, I'm likely to have a suite with room
to hold a small party.

Hi all,

Yes, I know it's the Friday before Labor Day weekend and we're all jones-ing to
get our 3-day party on.

We'll still meet at McMenamin's on Broadway for our ~monthly Agile
Practitioners' Lunch. From 1 -2:30 pm (or whenever we decide the conversation is
over).
For directions and more, see Calagator;
http://calagator.org/events/1250459185

Please let the list know if you'll be there, and, as usual, pass this notice
along to anyone who's been curious about Agile (questions like, "what is this
agile stuff anyway?' and "isn't extreme programming just hacking?" and "why
would my team need to include a scrummaster/an agile coach/testers on the team?"
and "doesn't agile mean we don't need documentation/managers/project
managers/BA's anymore?" and "sure, agile is fine for a single team, but does it
scale?' and "how do we recruit the right product owner/customer for our team?"
and "we've been holding stand-up meetings twice a week for three months and
nothing has changed, how do we get this Agile stuff to work?")

See you then,
Diana
