The Puget Sound meeting of the International Association of Software Architects will be welcoming Scott Came, Monica Yap, and Tamara Sulaiman for a discussion panel on "Managing Investment Across the Project Life Cycle" on Wednesday, October 26th. The meeting is scheduled from 6:30 to 9:00 PM.
Topic: Managing Investment Across the Project Life Cycle
Description: Scott Came, Monica Yap, and Tamara Sulaiman will be conducting a panel discussion about managing investment in projects from conception to delivery. Scott will discuss how enterprise architecture can be used as a mechanism to guide enterprise technology investment planning, and will illustrate how state government is doing so. Scott will also touch on SOA, and how to view technology investments as the provisioning of capabilities rather than technologies per se. Monica Yap will be discussing how her project teams are meeting investment costs through lean development methods and portfolio P&L (profit & loss) to validate business value. Tamara Sulaiman will discuss how she manages earned value by applying waterfall calculation techniques to agile projects.
Monica,
Sounds great! When is the next meeting?
Tamara

Hi All,
I got the go ahead from company to host any future APLN meetings. We
have a conference room which can host 15 people max, with projector
and white board. Good Washington Lake view too.
We are located in downtown Kirkland (401 Park Place, Kikland, WA
98033), it is about 10 -15 min from Microsoft campus, depends on
traffic.
Since none of the online mapping site do a good job of mapping this
address, so here is one close to it, I know it is for TGIF, but our
office is right above in the same building. We can always go for beer
after the meeting downstairs.

I need to send my belated apologies for not making it. My
participation in the local APLN this fall will be minimal, I've got
some family issues to deal with which are top priority. I've cancelled
all my travel and speaking engagements through until the spring of
next year.
I am available to take APLN related questions via email at my
Microsoft account, david.anderson@... and I will be happy to
pass on any requests that you have to the board or the core active
members working on the central programs.
Best regards,
David

Subject: [apln-sea] Goals of the local APLN
Hi All,
At this week's APLN meeting several people asked what the aims of the
local Seattle group were. I thought I'd put a few ideas forward as to
what I'd like to see the group doing, see if people thought these were
good and to kick start a discussion
At the first meeting David refered to the APLN as a Craft Guild . This
is my first and foremost interest. I'm lucky in that there are quite a
few more experienced agile people were I work but, firstly, I really
value outside opinions, and secondly, I'd like to share what (little) I
know with others. If APLN simply provided a mechanism to converse with
other agile practisioners on a regular basis and share ideas that would
make me very happy.
Obviously we could just get together for a beer once a month and talk
but it would be nice to set than within a framework of other activities.
Things that come to mind are;
Speakers every few months - I don't think a speak every month is
desirable. There are other local groups, e.g. Seattle XP, and only a
finite number of speakers. Periodically having someone come talk would
be a great focus.
Member's Stories - An informal speaker talking about their current agile
project, and maybe getting feedback from the group. I've been to a
couple of Seattle XP sessions like this and they were very informative.
Reading Group - I've never done one of these but it seems like a
reasonable idea. Pick a book read it and have a discussion around it,
either online or at a meeting.
The other thing that was mentioned was growing the APLN community . I
think the APLN should aim to provide a starting point for someone who
has heard about or read a book some sort of agile process and for people
who are going it alone and want a helping hand.
Resources online - Brent already made a good start on this.
Open meetings - Make sure the APLN meetings are open to everyone and
announce them as such.
Other Groups - Take to other groups, like Seattle XP and the local .NET
UG, and make sure their members know we exist and that we'd be a good
place to go for other type agile things (e.g. I want to layer Scrum on
top of my XP team, who can help me).
Attend local events - Maybe in the future we could have a presence at
local software conferences etc.
Please share your thoughts...
Cheers,
Ade

I posted this to the "Files" section of this group. This is one of my
favorite nuggets. I find it completely relevant to what leadership is
in cross-functional teams, the inverted structure of Agile
organizations and the amount of infomormation required to start a
project successfully.
P= 40 - 70 was abominal to me as a mathematician but as I let it
settle, I realized this is the answer to the requirements definition
problem. Less than 40% of the requirements may be too risky...more
than 70% is not advised.

For those of you who showed up tonight and listened to and discussed my thoughts on sustainability - thanks. Let me know if you are interested in working with me on crafting some wording that may work for adding sustainability to the APLN Declaration of Interdependence.
Here's the references I said I'd send out about The Natural Step:
A nice story of how Karl-Henrik Robert created The Natural Step in 1989 and it's first decade of evolution is found in

Mitch,
Sorry, but I had to work this evening and was unable to get away for the APLN
meeting after all. I also cannot attend the ABN this month as it is the same day
as Joann's birthday (Oct. 19th). Let's sync up soon. I will stop by to say hi if
I can get away in time.

with everyone when we first discussed meeting in one of the cafeterias –
Bldg. 112 is perfect for three reasons: 1) There is complete visibility for
people who do not have MS badges 2) The Bldg. 112 cafeteria is open and is
usually empty after hours 3) It is easy to get to Red Robin from there –
turn left onto 148th, go over the freeway, get in the second left
turn lane, turn left at the first light and make an immediate right into the
Red Robin parking area. I certainly look forward to continuing our discussion
if I can make it that evening.

Mitch and all (I've cc'ed the people who
signed their email addresses last meeting),
I'd prefer to have a meeting next
week - even if it is a 1/2 hour meeting before dinner, because I have a
topic that I'd like to discuss with you all. Perhaps we could meet on the
Microsoft campus again, if that's much easier to organize?
I'm a bit reluctant to describe my topic
in email, since I've discovered that it requires a bit of explanation, and I
have not found a succinct and clear way to do this via print. With that
caveat, here's the basic idea. I'd like to discuss whether we would like
to augment the Declaration of Interdependence to include a value of
sustainability. There is nothing in the DOI that mentions ethics, the
greater world good, or sustainability. Yet when I think of project
leadership and agile methodologies, they revolve around sustainability (for
individuals, teams, projects, companies). I'd like us to explicitly
extend this focus to include societies and the world. There are many reasons
for this desire, which I'd be glad to go into in person.
After our last meeting, I mentioned this
idea to the five people (Ade, Malcolm, Ward, Kevin, and Michael) at
dinner. They were all very interested - after I explained what I meant by
"sustainability" and put it into a business context. I'd like
to continue that discussion at next week's meeting, and believe it would be
much more effective to do so in a quieter place than Red Robin.
After that, having dinner and beers sounds
great.

OK,
I admit it. I have been slacking on my APLN duties. I can come up
with a million excuses, but in the end, they arejust that,
excuses.
Our
team is in a crunch and is pushing for a 10/21 deadline to have our stuff in
our production environment. Becauseof that, we broke
one rule,“keep a sustainable pace”because we
planned out our work and said“hmm, we’re
screwed. I guess we should not have experimented with least qualified
implementer ormandatory 1.5h pairings”. The experiment
was well worth it (I will tell you about it sometime), however we are now
paying the price with 10h days and 8h Saturdays.
All
is not lost, however!
A
bunch of Microsoft folks are meeting at Red Robin on Wednesday, Oct 19 at 6pm for dinner and beers. We
call it Agile Beer Night. It really is quite fun and gets good
attendance.
In
lieu of a meeting this month, perhaps we rally around Red Robin andhave a
social?

team is in a crunch and is pushing for a 10/21 deadline to have our stuff in
our production environment.
It really is quite fun and gets good
attendance.
In
lieu of a meeting this month, perhaps we rally around Red Robin andhave a
social?
If we meet early on Wednesday, we could join the Agile Beer Night at 6pm.....

As I think I shared with everyone when we first discussed meeting in one of the cafeterias – Bldg. 112 is perfect for three reasons: 1) There is complete visibility for people who do not have MS badges 2) The Bldg. 112 cafeteria is open and is usually empty after hours 3) It is easy to get to Red Robin from there – turn left onto 148th, go over the freeway, get in the second left turn lane, turn left at the first light and make an immediate right into the Red Robin parking area. I'm a bit reluctant to describe my topic in email, since I've discovered that it requires a bit of explanation, and I have not found a succinct and clear way to do this via print. With that caveat, here's the basic idea. I'd like to discuss whether we would like to augment the Declaration of Interdependence to include a value of sustainability. There is nothing in the DOI that mentions ethics, the greater world good, or sustainability. Yet when I think of project leadership and agile methodologies, they revolve around sustainability (for individuals, teams, projects, companies). I'd like us to explicitly extend this focus to include societies and the world. There are many reasons for this desire, which I'd be glad to go into in person.
After our last meeting, I mentioned this idea to the five people (Ade, Malcolm, Ward, Kevin, and Michael) at dinner. They were all very interested - after I explained what I meant by "sustainability" and put it into a business context. I'd like to continue that discussion at next week's meeting, and believe it would be much more effective to do so in a quieter place than Red Robin.
After that, having dinner and beers sounds great.

I was looking into some places in Bellevue and the Bellevue Club came up – they have a good space to meet and chat, are centrally located near I-90, 405 & 520 and is right off main bus lines.
