Agile Project Management Workshop with Greg Smith,
September 30th

Attendees will be given a free copy of Becoming Agile

This course provides a quick start into Agile Project Management. By participating in a case study, you will learn Agile principles and practices within the context of a real world project. Our case study will use a hybrid Agile process, using both Scrum and XP practices. The hybrid approach is becoming more common place as project teams establish a process that supports the unique variables of their environment.

Now more than ever, project teams need to deliver valuable software frequently within the constraints of changing business needs. Many project management methods view change as an exception and create additional impediments for the team. Agile methods embrace change and help the team deliver within the realities of software development.

For PMPs, this course is valued at 7 PDUs

When: September 30th, 9:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.
Where: SolutionsIQ Agile Learning Center- 10785 Willows Road NE, Redmond, WA 98052
Cost: $299

This workshop will help you:

  • Understand your role in an agile team
  • Learn how to use agile within your company
  • Learn techniques for prioritizing features
  • Minimize waste by delivering functionality that is used
  • Improve team buy-in for project objectives
  • Adapt to discoveries during a project
  • Plan and deliver value driven iterations
  • Improve project delivery by increasing customer interaction
  • Minimize project risk through status transparency
  • Obtain templates and guides that you can use with your projects
  • Determine which Agile practices your company/team is ready for

Course Topics:

  • Understanding how Agile ties to the bottom line
  • Identifying the best ideas in your project backlog
  • Validating the feasibility of a project idea
  • Identifying and prioritizing project features as a team
  • Agile estimation techniques
  • Creating release and iteration plans
  • Best practices for development and testing
  • Adapting to discoveries throughout a project
  • Better understanding of project status through daily meetings and simple tools
  • Delivery: Release plans, communication plans, and support plans
  • Retrospectives for iterations and projects

Who should attend:
This course is invaluable to software project team members looking to understand Agile from a practical, real world perspective. Typical attendees include project managers, development managers, product managers, developers, analysts, team leads, testers, and executives. This course is also excellent for ScrumMasters who want to learn how to add agile practices into their existing Scrum framework.

PMI Credits:
For PMPs, this course is valued at 7 PDUs.

Speaker:
Greg SmithSenior Project Manager, Certified ScrumMaster, Instructor - Bellevue College
Greg Smith has over 20 years of experience as a program manager, project manager, business analyst, and product manager. To date, most organizations have been transitioning their development organizations to Agile methods. But it is even more important for the business and management side of the organization to be Agile. Lean-Agile is about Business iterations, not development cycles. Agile teams are only as Agile as the Business and Management. Business Agility requires principles and practices which continually discover, prioritize, and drive development teams in realizing business value faster with their software development investment.

The first day of the Seattle Lean-Agile Symposium will explore the key aspects for Business Agility. It will also explore management's role and responsibilities and how they participate in the Lean-Agile paradigm. In particular, how management interacts with empowered business and Agile development teams. Transitioning to Agile has forced many developers to work in ways significantly different from what they have been used to.  These differences are in both the way they manage their projects and in how they do analysis, design, code and testing.  The second day of the Seattle Lean-Agile Symposium is split into two parts.  The first deals with how to increase the efficiency of the team by improving communications and breaking down the work.  The second takes on the issues of Agile programming and design.  The day provides an essential overview of the skills developers will need to be effective in the new Agile world.

o Expand beyond meetings and provide a place to collaborate
o Align software development and business
o Explore cutting-edge ideas and techniques

- When do we meet?
The plan was to gather at least once a month on the *3rd* Thursday of
the month--that's a change from our previous plan to target the fourth
Thursday-- and probably more often. With luck, that date will work
better for more people than the previous date did.

Transition Testing: Cornerstone of Database Agility
Test-driven development is a powerful tool that helps us translate requirements into specifications and specifications into working code. Many organizations find that, notwithstanding the elimination of rework, there is a significant gain in velocity introduced by driving their development efforts to tests.

Today, most of the community regards test-driven development to be crucial to Agility and, as a result, many practices have formed around the discipline. However, there is an obstacle to that prevents many of these practices from really taking hold in the database world: data. Databases are living, breathing objects with long life spans and this changes the forces slightly.

This talk covers the basics of transition testing, a technique that stabilizes database development. With transition testing in place, data ceases to be an impediment which holds back development and becomes an asset, adding value to your organization and further informing design.

Announcing Agile Open Northwest 2010! This Agile Open Space event will be held February 9th and 10th, 2010, in the Seattle Center Northwest Rooms. Please see http://www.agileopennorthwest.org for registration information and further details.

We invite you to our fourth annual Agile Open Northwest conference. Alternating each year between Portland and Seattle, AONW conferences bring together practicing members of the Northwest Agile communities to explore the latest developments in agile software development. We held our third annual event last year in Portland and enjoyed another great success. Registration is $125.00 for both days, including light breakfast and lunch. This low-cost regional conference is a great opportunity to connect with the local agile community, experts and novices alike.

Please join us this year as we host 125 experienced, collaborative, committed agile practitioners from the Northwest U.S. (and beyond) in tackling the issues around our recurring theme "Agile for Real." As in past years, attendance is limited to a predetermined number in order retain the many advantages a small conference has to offer.

Here is a comment from a previous attendee:

"These two-day Agile Open Northwest conferences are an extremely good value. ..[Y]ou learn directly from practitioners in the agile community what works and what doesn't. I attended the first two of these conferences, they were stunningly good... loads of practical, useful stuff and stimulating discussions." -- Ian Savage, PNSQC Program Chair

More information can be found at http://www.agileopennorthwest.org. We look forward to seeing you there.

In our still-on-the-bleeding-edge series of just-in-time events,
BeyondAgile presents:

"It Takes a Village: Organizing to Fulfill the Product Owner Role"
   Thursday, 18 February 2010
   6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Read on for agenda and locations information, or visit our Google

at †http://groups.google.com/group/beyondagile

- The Blurb
The Agile product owner role is famously defined as the "single
wringable neck" who ensures that software products and projects
deliver value. Many organizations struggle to fill this role, one that
collaborates with stakeholders to define value and manage a backlog,
provides tactical support to the delivery team, and directs the
product and project vision and roadmap. For most organizations, the
reality is that it takes a whole team of people to fill this role.

We're lucky to be able to kick off our 2010 event season with the
fantastic Ronica Roth, agie coach and consultant with Rally. Ronica
will begin with a quick overview of product owner responsibilities,
then describe patterns and examples for organizing product and
customer groups in product
companies, consulting shops, and internal IT departments. They'll be
two-way discussions of the successes and challenges of these patterns
and of your experiences with them.

Why should you come? Ronica's a great speaker, a fun person, and
before she was a teacher, she was a doer, discovering, evolving, and
managing software requirements as a product owner. She knows what
she's talking about.

- Event Agenda

- Where do BeyondAgile events happen?
Our goal is to have many answers to this. As a result, we've worked to

please volunteer to help!

Our speaker for tonight's (18 February 2010) BeyondAgile event, Ronica Roth, has
come down with laryngitis, and it doesn't look good for her recovery in time to
speak tonight.

So Larry and I, the hosts for tonight's event, reviewing what input and advice
we've received and consulting our crystal balls and guts, have decided to try to
rebook Ronica as soon as we can and CANCEL TONIGHT'S MEETING.

We hope you understand and support us in this call, and we're all looking
forward to our next event. Help us plan it and hold it: we need the energy and
help!

>
>
>
>
>
>
> - Event Agenda
> o Welcome and Announcements (10 min.)
> o "Organizing to Fulfill the Product Owner Role" presentation (60
> min.)
> o Questions and Answers (15 min.)
> o Giveaway Drawing (whatever we can find lying around to give away) (5
> min.)
> o Meeting Retrospective (10 min.)
> o Socializing and Breakout/Breakup/Beer
>
>
> - Event Location
> Yeah, we're still crazy after all last year, and so we're meeting at
> *two* physical locations, connected through videolink:

> - Opportunity knocks!
> If you've attended our meetings and think the audio/video links need
> improvement, or if you *can't * attend our meetings and wish there was
> live/stored streaming of meetings...BeyondAgile needs you! Everything
> we do happens because someone wants to make something better: we have
> no staff, no budget, no fixed leadership or organization...only the
> folks who want to help each month, and our faithful location sponsors
> (Amdocs Seattle Division and SolutionsIQ). Some folks from Agile
> Vancouver have some ideas about sharing their videoconferencing/
> streaming/posting video experience, so maybe you can be the person to
> help them help us and forge a cross-border alliance!
>
>
> So: help make this a better group. Contact us using any of the means
> you see in this announcement, or come to the meeting and see who you
> can get to help you!
>
>
> - What's BeyondAgile?
> It's the combination and follow-on to a number of the agile-oriented
> user and interest groups that have operated in the Puget Sound area.
> We aim to:
>
>
> o Build a bigger agile community
> o Take advantage of overlaps between existing groups
> o Expand beyond meetings and provide a place to collaborate
> o Align software development and business
> o Explore cutting-edge ideas and techniques
> o Discover the most useful practices among all agile processes
>
> - Where do BeyondAgile events happen?
> Our goal is to have many answers to this. As a result, we've worked to
> remove the impediment offered by bridges and commuting: we (try to)
> hold our events in both Eastside and Seattle locations, through the
> semi-magic of videocasting. That's (much) harder than it seems; we'd
> also still like to present events freed from the confines of time
> through streaming video. If you can make that happen, please, pease,
> please volunteer to help!
