I posted this on several yahoo groups yesterday but for some reason it did not
appear on ARR Railfans even when I sent it again twice - so my apologies if this
appears more than once.
This time I am posting directly on-line rather than by e-mail since the
list-owner assures me that I am not on moderated status!!
I wanted everyone to know that I have finally managed to get some full High
Definition videoclips on to the web. There are three clips:
The first showing Alaska Railroad's new Bilevel DMU 751 and views of a tidal
bore and two wolves taken from it,
The second from a trip on VIA's Skeena with views at Penny, McBride and at Mount
Robson
and the third of a freight train in the snow hauled by an ex CN GP9u now owned
by Central Manitoba Railway and operated by the Windsor & Hantsport Railway in
Nova Scotia
All these can be seen on the video page of my website

Thank you. Enjoy.

Roundhouse Hobbies has them from time to time. You might want to contact owner
Randy Thompson via the website to find out if he has other years available:
http://www.roundhousehobbies.com/souvenirs.htm
You will also want to check eBay. However, someone told me they are restricted
from selling ones from recent years. Must be some kind of OPSEC thing.
As for me, I only have extras from 2000 and 2002. If interested, contact me
via my email address.

Hi folks,
My wife and I visited Alaska in July/Aug of 2001 and I would like to purchase a
copy of the Employee Timetable that was in effect at that time. Not sure of the

I wouldn't mind having a copy of the current one also.

ARR had two domes of the same kind, 7004 and 7008. 7004 was wrecked in the
mid-1970's. The owner of 7008, St Louis Car Co, refers to their dome as
7004/7008 (this from some ICC paperwork). Anyone know why?

Thanks to John Combs for the nice photos of the BR-21 and BR-23 snow
blowers. Amazing, the varied uses of aircraft engines (piston as well
as jets).

This from one of my sources, "Yes, they were effective but very very expensive.
They pretty much melted everything in sight and tossed rocks everywhere.
Frankly though they really make such a mess and melt everything so much that the
they create these giant puddles which freeze right back up unless you have
really good drainage around where they are working."

This is something I missed earlier. Broadway Limited is doing a set of
California Zephyr cars in plastic, due in about now. The CB&Q dome coaches are
the ones ARR acquired from Amtrak in the earlier 1980's. They lasted to about
1986 I believe and left with the purge of steam equipment cars.

I am curious, since ARR has potentially sold the BR-21 and BR-22 jet
snowblowers, what takes their place? They had to be expensive to run
but I bet they were pretty effective at heating and clearing ice
fouled switches etc. Where they not?

Hi there,
I can't find it now, but the ARR had some used MOW equipment up for bid. 1 of
the items was a Jet Snow Blower. Guess they pulled the bid or did not post the
final bids on their website.

ARR had at least one jet powered snow blower (the jet engine was used to blow
snow, not power the wheels). It was used on the Eielson line a couple of years
ago as a test weed burner; which it did quite well but it didn't kill the weeds
since the roots were unaffected). I now see it sitting in a contractor's
storage yard on Badger Road between Fairbanks and North Pole.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska â€" The state-owned Alaska Railroad plans to lay off 20
percent of its employees, or about 143 people, the Alaska Daily News has
reported. The layoffs come amid a decline in traffic and an estimated $10-$12
million budget shortfall next year.
Railroad President Patrick Gamble told employees in an Aug. 31 email that he's
looking at ways to make the railroad run more efficiently, but that won't be
enough. "There would also need to be a significant reduction in funded manpower
positions across the railroad, estimated by me to be about 20 percent," he
wrote. "I directed those position reductions to be finalized and ready for
approval as quickly as possible."
Railroad spokesman Tim Thompson said no final decision had been made, and said
the railroad isn't taking questions on the matter. However, an article in the
railroad's employee newsletter said final decisions will be made at an Oct. 2
meeting, and all cuts will be instituted by the end of the year.
One of the old ones where the dome occupies only the middle third of the car.
It was inside the engine house having something (I've no idea what) done to it
yesterday late morning (Thursday 17th.)
Anyone have any insight as to why it's here?

Hello from France
Please, where can i see the repaired #3008 picture?
Thanks & greetings....
Bernard AUBERT
As far as I know, no one hurt.
3005 has been out on the road. The collision happened the day the 3005 came
back on the barge, but was not in the collision.
The 3003 has been out on the road, with no repairs, as far as I can tell.
I spotted the 3008 in Whittier this week. It has been repaired and back on the
road.
A few months ago the 3003 & 3008 were in a collision in Whittier and damaged.
Looks like the 3008 got a new lower front plate and plow. Maybe even some new
steps. Looks like the battery door was replaced too. Looks like the battery
door is now bolted shut, no knuckle buster latches.

These are electronic bells. Many of the ARR locomotives have them. Use Details
West part EB-337 to add this detail to your models in HO scale.

Several locomotives including 3007 & 3008 appear to have a large speaker
or air intake mounted on the left side of the cab roof just behind the
extra roof mounted lights. Can anyone give me more information and
possibly a photo from above.
Many thanks for any assistance you can give me for modelling purposes.

I took several photos of 2005 with the 75th anniversary logo on its
right hand side - the photo in John's web site also shows the right
side. Does any one know whether there was a logo on the left side and if
so where it was positioned?
A photograph would be great for modelling purposes in N gauge.
Many thanks.
BTW I have almost completed a High Definition AVCHD DVD of the
locomotives that I saw - all current classes and liveries and a HD DVD
of some of the scenery and wildlife seen from the train boat and plane.
I will probably also do a regular DVD if people are interested.
Cheers & many thanks for any help you can provide.
