Can any one tell me how to do better in DI papers?

DI or Data Interprtation requires one to hadle with graphs, pie charts & tables.

Believe or not it is one among the easier sections to crack

Because : The Easy & Difficult questions can be easily detected in very less time , so you can easily eliminate the difficult questions & start cracking the easier one's

>Here intially to get familiarise with the pattern .Practise as many Sets of Graphs & Tables available i the coaching materials so that you a feel of it.

> The short cut maths is undoubtedly an advantage to pace with the time. Here Vedic Maths comes really handy.

> "Apperance are deceptive" among each and every graph there will be certainly some questions which might take less than 30sec to crack.

For eg: a question may come

which company has higher turnover a,b,c,or none

Here you might have to just glance at the picture and arrive to the answer and no calculations would be required and certainly one answer has to be the answer.

If you could crack 4-6 questions in 2 minutes. Then you save a huge time plus solid 4-6 marks you gain upon others.

> Beware: Questions haing options like a)7.5 b) 7 c)8.5d)8 have to be avoided since the main motive behind the CAT paper is check your decision making as a manager and remember questions you leave is as important as questions you attempt.

what is the usual ???cut off?

The usual cutoff varies between 15 -- 25 a 20+ is certainly a good score.

Also what is the best approach in cat- ie some tells me that
concentrating on ones strong areas always pays.. is that right?

Best Approach would be to keep the DI section as the last section to attempt. After few SIMCAT you would certainly have some ideas about the questions to be classified

you can classify questions in 3 broad heads:

a) "A type" in this category falls questions which are easy and takes less. The must be answered ones.

b) "B type" in this category falls questions which are easy but lenghty which generally takes one whole minute or more than minute to crack buteasy involving some calculations.

c) "C Type" in this category falls questions which are difficult & time consuming.

So when you get to DI Section take 5 minutes to identify "A type questions " & "B type" queswtions. In the first round attempt the "A type" and next move onto "B type" and finally leave out the "C type" ones.

Remember : Here in this section DI you have your answers hidden in the table or graphs and all you have to do is to find it.

So Ain't it easy ???

i am looking to form a small study group in Bangalore preferably for
working professionals.Right now i work for Infosys .If you are of the
view that group studies and Discussions about topics helps please
drop me a mail.

People who intend to broaden their horizons besides books when going
for CAT would know what i am talking about.in case you are one..and
just in case you are interested for discussions on Topics from Sensex
to VAT including the regular QA ,VA and stuff just click on reply and

IIFT normally have 20 ppl attending a single GD that lasts for 1 hour ...not
kiddin...
fish market scene....at the end each person summarises for 2 min

I guess they do ask ques on Labour laws from few people and rest is same.

Interview is lot based on the essay we wrote in XAT paper

Hi Friends,
 
I got a call from GLIM (Great Lakes Institute of Management).
 
Since it's an upcoming institute can anybody guide me as to whether I can take up the course at GLIM (Assuming I can clear the GD & PI)
 
It's a one year programme and cost 4.5 lakhs (they provide 100% loan)
 
I spoke with few students of GLIM who says the faculties and the course content is really good. Top notch companies comes for placement and the avg salary is around 4.2 lakhs.
 
CAT Score: 70.34 percentile.
 
I have 3 yrs of experience with HP (Hewlett Packard)
 
Kindly give your valuable suggestion.

A shepherd has 1 million sheeps at the beginning of Year 2000. The numbers grow by x% (x > 0) during the year. A famine hits his village in the next year and many of his sheeps die. The sheep population decreases by y% during 2001 and at the beginning of 2002 the shepherd finds that he is left with 1 million sheeps. Which of the following is correct?

Ram completes 60% of a task in 15 days and then takes the help of Rahim and Rachel. Rahim is 50% as efficient as Ram is and Rachel is 50% as efficient as Rahim is. In how many more days will they complete the work?

As far as BMD is concerned.. I heard that interviews are generally
15-20 mins long.
The questions may be from any of the foll..

5. Work related
6. Career goals etc
7. General interests, hobbies etc

I think there is no GD

    just felt like sharing my exp with XL last yr....one thing i wud
like to tell u is that dont assume anythng to be asked..bcoz it
really will be a surprise 4 U..in my case the PI lasted for 40 mins
against the 20 min schedule..not a single tech qs was there..bcoz I
had a good percentage..they ll grill u on smthng u r least confident
about...try to drag the PI to ur strong point..dont bluff..they r
too smart..and appreciate honest answer like "I DONT KNOW"..but with
an explanation..bcoz i am an Engg. student,they asked me about biz
fundas..labour laws..I heard of it 4 the first time???
i wud mention sm qs..
1)why do u want to join XL?
2)whats ur hobby?
3)which ad do u like the most?why?
4)what s the difference btween a share and a bond.
5)how do u calculate  index in a  stock market.
the first qs will be tell me smth about urself...
so prepare that as well..
body language will be scrutinised..
so ATB...

Hi dear friends,

                    My name is prashanth i have completed my graduation (B.E
in civil engineering).Iam presently working as a site engineer.I have been a
student in CP.I have a dream to persue higher studies in M.B.A. and get a
managearial job.I have got seat in ICFAI Business school bangalore, but the
fee there is as high as 4.58 lakhs and it is very difficult to arrange this
huge amount,so i want to know weather there is any open scholarship awarded
for M.B.A education.ICFAI university offers scholarship only to top 50
candidates, unfortunately i am not one those top 50.So i want some help from
any of you who know how to get a finacial help like OPEN SCHOLARSHIPS to
persue my higher studies.Also i want to know what is the reputation ICFAI
bangalore has in the corporate world i.e. is it worth getting a M.B.A degree
from this B-school after paying this huge fee.

The question for the day is a data sufficiency question.

 

In a data sufficiency question you will be given a question that will be followed by two statements. You are expected to answer if the information provided in the two statements is sufficient to answer the given question.

 

Please be careful to read the instructions before the data sufficiency questions. These instructions have changed from CAT to CAT. CAT 2003 (Re test) had a different set as compared to the ones seen in the previous three or four Common Admission Tests.

  

Directions

This data sufficiency problem consists of a question and two statements, labeled (A) and (B), in which certain data are given. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. Using the data given in the statements, plus your knowledge of mathematics and everyday facts (such as the number of days in a leap year or the meaning of the word counterclockwise), you must indicate whether —

 

(1) The question can be answered using either statement (A) alone but not statement (B) or statement (B) alone but not statement (A). 

(2) If either of the two statements individually is sufficient to answer the question 

(3) If both statements (A) and (B) together are required to answer the question 

(4) The question cannot be answer despite using the information provided in statements (A) and (B) taken together.

 

Question

 

How long will it take for two pipes A and B to fill an empty cistern if they worked alternately for an hour each?

A.        Working alone, Pipe A can fill the cistern in 40 hours

B.        Pipe B is one third as efficient as Pipe A
