The question for the day is from the topic Pipes and Cisterns.

There are 12 pipes attached to a tank. Some of them are fill pipes and some are
drain pipes. Each of the fill pipes can fill the tank in 12 hours, while each of
the drain pipes will take 24 hours to drain a full tank completely. If all the
pipes are kept open when the tank was empty, it takes 2 hours for the tank to
overflow. How many of these pipes are drain pipes?

Hi Santosh
I am an CAT 2002 aspirant.
Regarding ur query abt whether MAT is worth taking. I dont know if
others in the group would share this idea, but as per me no exam is
waste of time or energy. Because every exam builds a different
expierence in u, U might not be interested in the B-schools accepting
MAT but, answering the test itself is a major learning and challenge

Santosh this is my viewpoint, anyway all the best for the exam.

Baskar,
With refernce to the initial stage of Mock
Tests for CAT I wanted to put a question to the group.

Should we put stress on accuracy or speed in CAT.

Well, this question arises from the fact that while
solving questions if I go very fast then I make plenty
of mistakes.

Could you please shed some light in this.

Thanks,

Debu

Hi Debu,

A very imperative question which should be discussed. I strongly
recommend that you start off attempting lesser questions with
greater accuracy than vise-versa.

If u do vise-versa ie. increase speed then try improving accuracy,
out of personal experience i figure its very hard to do. As we
keep repeating the same mistakes ie. going by gut-feel etc.

So keep ur accuracy level to something around 85%. And keep
increasing ur attempts. That is start off with say 70 attempts
only and increasing it to about 100+ by CAT.

Comments/Suggestion welcome.....

Hi Vikram,

I would suggest a simulated CAT or a mock CAT offered by any
reputed insti taken at home in exam conditions is a very, very
cheap alternative.

MAT has only 2nd rung instis. Goa Insti of Mgmt used to be a part
of it, once upon a time but now even that comes under CAT. So I
would strongly advice against taking MAT if u want :

1) just experience of test taking

2) to get a All India Ranking (as most studnets taking MAT are
duffers it will unnecessarily inflate ur ego)

3) to join a mgmt insti worth giving an MBA degree. But yes if u
"want to dare think beyond the IIMs" then give it a shot.....:)
(pun very much intended).

Hi!

The question for the day is a data sufficiency question.

In this question, there is a question statement which is followed by two
statements. You have to decide whether the information provided in the two
statements is sufficient for answering the question.

Mark 1 If the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but
cannot be answered by using the other statement alone.

Mark 2 If the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

Mark 3 If the question can be answered by using both statements together, but
cannot be answered by using either statement alone.

Mark 4 If the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements
together.

Question: In which year was Raghavan born?

Statement A: Sundar who is older than Raghavan by one and a half years was born
in the year 1958.

Statement B: Raghavan turned 18 years in the year 1978.

Hi Guys!

One of the key things to note is to have a strategy before you take a Mock
CAT.

One thing that I have found to have worked for a lot of people is this.
Whether there is a section wise time limit or not, set a limit for yourself.
This year CAT, as mentioned in the brochure, is one where there is going to
be no section wise time limit.

So give yourself time limits for each section. Say, Quant 50 minutes, DI 40
minutes and Verbal 30 minutes. The individual section wise limit will vary
from person to person. But the above is a reasonably good representative
sample. Then attempt questions in each of these sections and move to the
next section 5 minutes before the time limit that you have set. That is in
45 minutes for Quant, 35 for DI and 25 for Verbal. At the end of 1 hour 45
minutes take a quick evaluation as to how you have performed in each of the
sections. If you feel, you have not done well in say, DI, spend the
remaining 15 minutes on DI. On the contrary, if you think you have done
reasonably well in all three sections, spend the last 15 minutes on the
section that will give you the maximum returns.

In all of these, keep one thing in mind. Maintain as much accuracy as
possible in the first 1 hour 45 minutes. In the last 15 minutes, make
intelligent guesses. For instance, if you can eliminate 2 out of the 4
answer choices and you are not sure which of the other two to tick, take an
intelligent guess. This does not mean that you mark anything during the last
15 minutes. Remember, what I said was INTELLIGENT GUESSING and not random
ticking.

Best wishes

K S Baskar

Dear friends,

I am staying near  Mulund. Is any one in Mumbai ( Central line, Vashi) willing to share CAT material ( like career launcher etc) . I am having IMS of last year. At the risk of being immodest, let me tell you that I can share my knowledge in Quantitative techniques. Over the years, I have mastered ways to cut down time for  calculation by 75% . This will definitely help to improve the quant score  without any exception . If any one is interested in joint study which may help mutually, please contact thru email.

Regards

cisa

Keka,
You are right by saying that certain codes are
not 3 digits although there are 3 boxes corresponding
to them.

In all such cases we need to append a zero(0)
infront of the relevant code.

The above approach is as well mentioned in the
CAT application brochure in the code section.

Hopefully this clears your doubt.

Cheers,

Debu

Hi Dev

Yes! From the trend in the past, SP Jain is an insti which tends to favour
people with 2 or more years of work ex.

So, if you are a fresher, SP Jain will be a tougher nut to crack than some of
the IIMs.
