Dear friends,

I am staying near  Mulund. Is any one in Mumbai ( Central line, Vashi) willing to share CAT material ( like career launcher etc) . I am having IMS of last year. At the risk of being immodest, let me tell you that I can share my knowledge in Quantitative techniques. Over the years, I have mastered ways to cut down time for  calculation by 75% . This will definitely help to improve the quant score  without any exception . If any one is interested in joint study which may help mutually, please contact thru email.

Dear All Aspirants,
I wish all of you all the luck and hope that you wish me the same.
I will be appearing for CAT this year.
I will also appear for XAT but i cannot just fill up their form for one very
ridiculous reason:
My native city is not listed in the names of the cities that the form contain.
This field is a compulsory one.

I have also contacted the admissions cell of XAT to no avail.

Can anyone guide me in this matter?

Thanks to anyone who replies.

Well

There is a column in the CAT application form where you need to fill in the
number of months of work ex that you have as of Dec 31 2002.

all men are slaves
all slaves are donkeys

essentially means all men are donkeys. because it is all inclusive. some men
are donkeys has to connotation that some men are not, which is not true
given the earlier two statements.

Best wishes

mostly centred around 90. but generally varies each year. last year 85+ was considered good for getting a call from any IIM. but it might get as high as 100 and as low as 80.

Hi debu,

this is a very very relevant question. But i feel that in an exam like CAT wherein negative marking is involved.accuracy is a must .What is the use of attempting all questions if they r wrong.I would rahter have a balance between speed and accuracy. What I mean is deciide ur srenghts as in which topic ur good in attempt that with 100% accuracy >Instead of attempting all i would rahter attempt 75-80% questions with accuracy. In 50 marks of maths section,I would rahter attempt 30-35 questiond with 100% accuracy than ateempting all 50 question with only 40-50% accuracy. That would ultimately result in negative marks.

Bye

Best of Luck

Baskar,
          Sorry for the trouble again.

I have come across certain Logical Reasoning
problems during the MOCK test which are quite lengthy
to read and at the same time requires quite a lot of
time to comprehend.

I would be grateful if you could please
provide some tips for attacking and solving those

Here follows a sample problem :

There are 5 friends A,B,C,D and E. Two of them play
tennis while the other three play different games viz.,
football, cricket and chess. One tennis player and the
chess player stay on the same flooer 3, while the other
three stay on different floors 2, 4 and 5. Two of these
five players are industrialists while the other three
belong to different occupations viz., teaching, medical
and engineer. The chess player is the oldest in age
while one of tennis players who plays at the national
level is the youngest. The other tennis players who
plays at the regional leval lies agewise between the
football player and the chess player. D is a regional
player and stays on the flooer 3 while E is a teacher
and stays on floor 5. The football player is a doctor
and stays on the floor 2 , B is an engineer while A is
the industrialist and plays tennis at national level.

Follows the sort of questions on the basis of above
passage :

1. Who stays on floor 4?
1) A 2) B 3) C 4) E

2. What does E play?

1) Chess 2 ) Football 3) Cricket 4) Tennis
at regional level

And so on...

Baskar, what I want to ask we can solve these type of
problems by getting our head around and around but I
was searching for some good approach for cracking the
above problems. Otherwise it gets pretty time consuming.

Sorry for the lengthy email, I just wanted to stress
what I needed to know through an email.

I will be waiting for your feedback.

Thanks,

Debu

I am interested in making a small group of CAT aspirants in Mumbai( sessions  to be held in Thane/Mulund) to eliminate chapter-specific weaknesses in quant and maximise our individual score in quant/DI.. The group will meet for quant/DI for a minimum 4 hour session every week . The group will solve all the DIFFICULT maths/logical reasoning problems from all chapters ( quant) . The questions will be collected from various courses like IMS, Career launcher, TIME etc.The methodology of utilising the time in the best possible manner will be discussed in due course. Idea is to put our heads together and discuss the best possible techniques in solving the tricky questions of each chapter. If interested please mail.

Dear Rajesh

As against PGP where IIMs generally have a certain number of seats to fill,
in FPM they can technically choose not to select anyone (though, I do not
think that it has happened too often) if they do not find the right
candidate. My guess is that the same 1 percentile or less rule applies to
FPM as well. If anything, the percentile will be lesser. The interviewing
process for FPM is usually pretty rigorous - (please DO NOT read it as
necessarily tough) - they basically test for your research and academic
orientation in greater depth. Therefore, interviewing objective and style
will be pretty different for FPM as against PGP.

Best wishes

------------

Logical problems are generally time consuming. My suggestion is that avoid
these problems in the first instance.

Remember, your objective is to score the maximum amount of marks in the
given time. You will not be penalized for having solved all the easy
problems in CAT. Neither would you be given special credits for digging out
the tough problems. CAT, fortunately, to date, does not have adaptability in
difficulty levels as GMAT does.

So, the first lesson in test taking strategy is -- choose your questions
smart. It is easier said than done. You gain confidence about the questions
that you can attempt adn the ones you have to skip only by continuous
practice and scrupulous analysis of your previous test papers. Take each of
the tests that you have done to date and analyse every single question - see
how long you took to crack the question - was it out of fluke you got it
right? or you actually knew how to do it? Second, check out if you made use
of the answer choices to arrive at your choice - if so pat yourself - you
are on the right track.

Sometimes, it helps to have some very simple rules. My advice would be to
crack only those problems where you can use the answer choice (like
substituting them in the question) to arrive at the solution in the first
instance. And after solving all of those questions where you can use the
answer choice, if you are still left with time on hand, attempt the other
questions.

Given all this logic - logical question does not fit in the first or the
second go. If you still have time and the only question you have left
unanswered is logical question, then try and solve them. To get sufficient
practice, get one of the GRE books like Barrons. they have sufficient
exercise on these type of arrangement problems. Draw tables and try and
represent whatever data is given to you in either tabular or pictorial form.
It helps you to crack the problem effectively.

Best wishes for your CAT prep.

If you guys still have not sent your CAT application to the respective IIMs
(depending upon your test center choice) do it today. You never know when a
postal strike can strike?
