All are equal..

any number raised to 1 is the number itself. In that way for given examples i.e 2^1 = 2 hence 2/2=1, likewise for all others i.e. 3^1/3=3/3=1, 6^1/6=6/6=1, 12^1/12=12/12=1. hence each term is equal to 1.

Ishan,
No dude... you cant carry calculator.

if you cant quickly add numbers or divide or calculate anything by yourself, then how can u go for managing big organisations wherein you need to take quick actions or steps based on the situation you get. there you cant make use of calci or any other things. you yourself should solve it. so they want us to calculate every problem given and give the answer in CAT paper. thats why they have kept
" Aptitude" section, which will show how good you are in thinking analytically.

so dont ever think of the things getting very easily. its very tuf to go to top. hold your nerves, pullout your strengths and work out.

HI this is a CAT 2006 Question

The way to take the problem
Let us take the L.C.M of (2,3,4,6,12)

(2^1/2)^12, (3^1/3)^12 , (4^1/4)^12 ,(6^1/6)^12, (12^1/12)^12

we get
2^6 , 3^4 , 4^3 ,6^2 , 12^1

so from above solution we can conclude 3^1/3  is the largest.

hi bharadwaja,
we know that tan(A+B)=  tan(A)+tan(B)/[1-tan(A)tan(B)]
so tan81=tan(9*9)=cot(9)
tan(9)+tan(81)=tan(9+81)*[1-tan9tan81]=tan90*[1-tan9cot9]=0;
proceeding on similar lines u'll get -(tan27+tan63)=0
so tan9-tan27-tan63+tan81=0;
may be i'm not sure but the approach is correct
bye
gud luck

answer should be infinity-infinity=undetermined
by the formula tan(A+B)=(tanA+tanB)/(1-tanA*tanB)
once take the vales of A and B 27 and 63 respectively and than take 9 and 81....n think i am right as per ma last solution given to needed 1...

infinity - infinity is not an indeterminate dude..................

since infinity is a symbol and not a value..............infinity - infinity is also infinity..............

however the method in which you have progressed is not exactly correct...

the answer cannot be infinity because there is no value in the sum that can possibly yeild an infinity in the answer.....( tan 9, tan 27, tan 63, tan 81)

all the values are finate and hence the answer should also be a finate one.....

In fact, the answer fot the sum turns out to be 4.....

this is supposed to be solved by analysis ...... and not by brute caluclation

"the method you have proposed is like saying......

3*0 = 5*0

and hence 3=5; :"

hi dear
as far as i know there is negative marking in mat (feb 09).and once
the score is converted into a CET score then you will be considered
as an oms student..chk this link for doubts

all the best.

well the correct solution is here ( i am writing down this solution
becuz michael arun`s equations and ans are different his equations
give negative ans but the ans is positive and also to remove sum
confusion abt formulas of trignometry)
TAN9 -TAN27 -TAN63 +TAN81
USE THE FORMULA
TAN(A)+TAN(B)=SIN(A+B)/COS(A)COS(B)
the domain for this formula is A n and B
so use this on 9 and 81 & the other group wud be 27 and 63
NOTE:- we cannt use the formula
TAN(A+B)=TANA-TANB/1+TANA*TANB
cuz the domain for this formula is An+/2 Bm+/2
and A+Bk+/2
so the question of infinity doesnt arise cuz u cant use this formula
on the group (9,81) and (27,63) cuz the sum is =/2
more over - isnt infinity , its indeterminate and theres a
difference between indeterminate quatity and infinity
+ means that its lager than all the real numbes however large it may
be , we dont know its value so how can u find its difference thats y
the difference cant be found hence its called inderterminate and that
is not equal to infinity
so using the formula
TAN(A)+TAN(B)=SIN(A+B)/COS(A)COS(B)
sin90/cos9cos81 - sin90/cos27cos63
now multiply numerator and denominator by 2
2/2cos9cos81 - 2/2cos27cos63
now use the formula 2cosAcosB=cos(A+B)+cos(A-B)
and also remember that cos(-)=cos
so it boils down to
2/cos72 - 2/cos36
i hope u guys know that cos36=(1/4)(5+ 1 )
cos72=2cos^2(32)-1
so now put the values
my ans came to be abt 4.002

tc all
and happy new year

TAN9 -TAN27 -TAN63 +TAN81
USE THE FORMULA
TAN(A)+TAN(B)=SIN(A+B)/COS(A)COS(B)
the domain for this formula is A ≠ nπ and B ≠ π
so use this on 9 and 81 & the other group wud be 27 and 63
NOTE:- we cannt use the formula
TAN(A+B)=TANA-TANB/1+TANA*TANB
cuz the domain for this formula is A≠nπ+π/2
B≠mπ+π/2
and A+B≠kπ+π/2
so the question of infinity doesnt arise cuz u cant use this formula
on the group (9,81) and (27,63) cuz the sum is =π/2
more over ∞-∞ isnt infinity , its indeterminate and theres a

2/2cos9cos81 - 2/2cos27cos63
now use the formula 2cosAcosB=cos(A+B)+cos(A-B)
and also remember that cos(-θ)=cosθ
so it boils down to
2/cos72 - 2/cos36
i hope u guys know that cos36=(1/4)(√5+ 1 )
cos72=2cos^2(32)-1
so now put the values
my ans came to be abt 4.002

lemme tell u the simple formula and the reason behind it
number of termsin expansion of (x+y+z)^n=(n+1)(n+2)/2
and now the reason behind it
number of terms in this is equal to number of ways of distributing 20
identical things among 3 persons ,when each person can get zero or
more things
(3+20-1)
         C
          20
C-combination

hi guys....
i think this is the right answer
  [tan(63)+tan(27)] - [tan(81)+tan(9)]
=4
