Hi,

I agree with Nachiket. Both the data are required to solve the problem.

I think only B. would be sufficient, we can  get the answer in terms of 'H'.

Subject: Answer to the Cone DS question
cat@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi all

Here is the answer and explanation to the DS question sent to you a week back. For the benefit of those who joined late here is the question.

Question

The following data sufficiency question is a question that tests your knowledge about circles in geometry.

Directions to answer the DS question

1. Statement (A) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (B) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
2. Statement (B) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (A) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
3. BOTH statements (A) and (B) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.
4. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.
5. Statements (A) and (B) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed.

Question

A right circular cone has height H and radius R. A small cone is cut off at the top by a plane parallel to the base. At what height above the base the section has been made?

A. H = 20 cm
B. Volume of small cone: volume of large cone :: 1:15The following data sufficiency question is a question that tests your knowledge about circles in geometry.

Correct Answer is choice (3).

Explanation

From Statement A: H = 20; we do not know the height at which the section has been cut. Hence, we can eliminate choices (1) and (4). We are down to choices (2), (3) or (5).

Statement B: Let the volume of the small cone be (1/3) pi*r*r*h; r is radius and h is the height.
Then (1/3) pi*r*r*h = (1/15)* (1/3) pi*R*R*H
=> h = (1/15) (R*R*H/r*r) . From this information, we cannot find the answer for h. Hence, statement B alone is not sufficient. We can eliminate choice (2).

Combining both the statements: When a section is made the two cones are similar triangles. so h/H = r/R
Therefore, R = rH/h
We know H = 20
h = (1/15) ( rH/h) ( rH/h)*H /r*r)
=> h^3 = (1/15)(H^3)
h can be found.

Hence, choice 3 is the answer.

let us take X as the total constant fee and Y be varying fee then
by first condition
X + 60Y = 60*1200

and by second condition
X + 90Y = 90*1000

by solving both hte equations we will get X = 36000 and Y = 600

now let R be no. of occupants required then we will get the equation

36000 + [R*600] = R*900

by solving the eq. we will get R = 120

answer is 120

Hi All,

Correct me if m wrong !

(a,b,c,d) would represent a cyclic rectangle so a+c = b+d = 180

tan A = tan(180-C) = -tan C

similarly tan B = tan(180-D) = -tan D

hence tan A + tan B + tan C = 5

-tan C -tan D + tan C = 5
tan D = -5

Rajend

solution:-
A+C=180 and B+D=180
so tan(A+C)=tan180
  it means tanA+tanC=0
similarly tanB+tanD=0

so tanA+tanB+tanC+tanD=0
5+tanD=0
tanD=-5

Hi

Here is this week's CAT Prep question. This is a data sufficiency question in Geometry. Tests your basic understanding of Circles.

Question

Does the circle A with radius ‘a’ touch circle B with radius ‘b’ internally?
A. The two circles touch each other at only 1 point
B. The distance between centers of A and B is a-b

Correct answer and explanation @ http://iim-cat- forum.2iim. com/about98. html

well it is being partly constant so suppose that
x is varying and y is constant
so the eqn will be
60x+y=1200*60
90x+y=1000*90
solve it
u will get answer
rem the constant part cant be changed

In the above problem for an increment of 30 people there is an decrase
in amount of 200 rupees. So for an decrement of 100 rupees we've to have an
increment of 15 people.Dat makes the total as 15+90=105.

Hi,
the answer to the asked question would be -5,
bcoz the quad. is a cyclic one and so the sum of opposite angles would be 180
deg. tan(A+C)=(tan A + tan C)/(1- tanA.tanC).suppose A and C are the opposite
angles. Therefore ,tan A +tan C=0.
After manipulating in the given eqn. we would get the ans. of
tan D =-5

Hi, The answer is D, Because there are 31 square numbers(1 4 9 16 25 36 49 64 81 100 121 144 169 196 225 256 289 324 361 400 441 484 529 576 625 676 729 784 841 900 961) &  9 Cube numbers(8 27 64 125 216 343 512 729 1000). So total 40 number will be eliminated from sequence and 1041 is the 1000th term.

You are absolutely right. 64 is both square and cube hence 1 will be excluded
from list (of vinayak's 41).

apparently the 1000th term becomes 1040. But since 1024 is a square and it ll
not be a part of series, the final 1000th term becomes 1041.

So D is correct!

Chandu.
