Question:
There is grassy square plot. One horse is tied at the mid point of one side of
the field and another horse is tied at the adjescent side of the first one. The
rope is just long enough for the horses to reach the centre of the square. Find
the ratio of the area of the commonly grazed part to the area of the square
field.
a) (pi-2)/8
b) (pi-2)/6
  three other options were also there.

a poem has seven lines, each of which starts with the letter P,Q,R,S,T,Uand v .the line starting with R is the 3rd from the bottom and the line starting with V is the 2nd from the top.the line starting with Q and that starting with U have exactly 3 line in between. either S or P is the only letter between R and U. the poem is likely to start with:
1.T or S or only Q   2. T or R or only V   3. only T or only S or only P 4.T or S or only R

hi.......
this is a simple question......consider a square with  s>0,s<=a,y>0,y<=a
the 2 semicirles will hv cetre at (a/2,0) and (0,a/2) with a/2 as radius
find their pt of intersection and use integration to calculate its area........it will be in terms of a^2
and the area of the square is a^2................the aswer comes out to be pi-2/8

there is no need to apply integration this problem can be solved by simple geometry. Draw a square and draw two semi circles taking a/2 as a radius along the adjacent sides. u will observe thatthe commonly grazed area can be found by area of semicircle - area of right angle triangle  taking a/2 as a radius. hence the answer will be (pi-2)/8

Hey,

Here is my interpretation:

When you say log x (base 10) = k
you are effectively saying that 10^k is x. See the log graph for more clarification.

Anyhow, if you take the negative base - not every positive number can be expressed as its power.
Therefore, negative base is not allowed.

Hope that helps.
Ashish.

we cant definitely say whether it's possible or not...
everything is conditional in logarithms...
negative bases are possible only under some conditions...

check out the attachment i've provided with in this mail...
that'll be useful in explaining that funda...
also,thanks for asking such a wonderful doubt...

Hi Prashant,

Ascent does offer a correspondence course for CAT. You can sign up for the course online and pay by credit card or an Internet Banking account. Alternatively, you can download an application form, fill it, enclose a DD for the fees and send it to us. Course material will be shipped to any part of India for a fee of Rs.4300. The course material covers all areas tested in CAT and includes 20 full length tests and 10 Mock CATs. The course material will be sent to you when you register and Mock CATs in the second week of October.
If you reside outside India in the US, UK, Europe, Japan, Middle East Asia, or Far East Asia and plan to take CAT, you can register for 2IIM's CAT Correspondence Course and receive the study material by courier. The fees INCLUDING international courier charges is Rs.10,250 (Rupees Ten Thousand Two Hundred Fifty Only). The fees, however, does not include import duties, if any, at the destination country.

The answer goes like this:-

x1 men can complete a work in D days
1 man complete it in x1*D days
x2 men can complete in (x1*D)/x2 days

y1 women in D days
1 woman in y1*D days
y2 women in (y1*D)/y2 days

In 1 day x2 men do x2/(x1*D) part of  work
in 1 day y2 women do y2/(y1*D) part of work
so in 1 day x2 men and y2 women do w=(x2/(x1*D)) + (y2/(y1*D)) part of work
so total days they will take to finish it = 1/w

1 men = 1 women in D days

efficiency of men and women is same

1men + 1 women done  the same work in D/2 days.

such type of question is done through logically
5 men do a work in 3 days
1 men do the same work in 3*5=15 days
more men less time or less men more time

x1 men - D days - total work
1 man - 1 day - {1/(x1*D)}  total work
x2 men - 1 day - {x2/x1*D)}  total work

y1 women - D days - total work
1 woman - 1 day - {1/(y1*D)}  total work
y2 women - 1 day - {y2/y1*D)}  total work

so, x2 men and y2 women - 1 day - [ {x2/x1*D)} + {y2/y1*D)} ]
                                                    = [ { (x2*y1)+(x1*y2) }/(x1*y1*D) ]  total work
hence x2 men and y2 women will take [ (x1*y1*D)/{ (x2*y1)+(x1*y2) } ]  days to do the job...

i hope this will help you,if at all the solution is right...
thanks...

Hi sangita,
Since the amount of work done by the x1 men and y1 women are equal,
Put x1 men=y1women (ie) equate the no of men = no of women

and bring the given eqn (x2 women+y2women) in terms of x1 and y1 and put the time and work formula M1D1H1/W1=M2D2H2/W2

Sample problem 4u
If 10 men 0r 18 boys can do a work in 15 days,then in how many days the double of the work  is done by 25 men and 15 boys?

10men = 18 boys   => Men=(9/5) boys
Therefore, 25men+15boys=25(9/5)boys+15boys=60 boys.

Now substitute in the Time and work formula,M1D1H1/W1=M2D2H2/W2

(18*15)/1=(60*x)/2  => x=9 days.

Therefore, the double of the work  is done by 25 men and 15 boys in 9 days.

Note:
The above steps can be done in mental by practice.Members,pls mail if there are more easy shortcuts so that we all can know.

Regards,
Vijay,

The answer goes like this:-

x1 men can complete a work in D days
1 man complete it in x1*D days
x2 men can complete in (x1*D)/x2 days

y1 women in D days
1 woman in y1*D days
y2 women in (y1*D)/y2 days

In 1 day x2 men do x2/(x1*D) part of  work
in 1 day y2 women do y2/(y1*D) part of work
so in 1 day x2 men and y2 women do w=(x2/(x1*D) ) + (y2/(y1*D)) part of work
so total days they will take to finish it = 1/w

let the number be x...
expected result is 5x...
mistaken result is x/5 or 0.2x...

so the percentage by which mistaken value is less than actual value is :
{(5x-0.2x)/5x}*100 = 96%...
i.e. mistaken value is 96% less than actual expected value...

or actual value is 2400% more than the mistaken value...
{(5x-0.2x)/0.2x}*100 = 2400%...

in simple words,actual value is 25 times the mistaken value...
and mistaken value is (1/25) times the actual value...

i hope that helps...
take care...

If x is the number and is divided by 5 mistakenly instead of multiplied by 5 then
Expected reult: 5x
Actual result  : x/5
Percentage change in result would be (x/5-5x)*100/5x. Negative sign indicates the result is lesser than the expectred result.

It is 5 squared = 25 %

so for n it is n squared decrease in percentage from the actual expected result.

Hi
Let the number be 25.
Original resultant should be 25x5= 125
But it is divided by 5
So new no. would be 25/5 = 5

Error = 125-5= 120
% error = (120/125)*100= 96%

hey i think it wil go as follows:
let the no be x

therefore x/5 instead of 5x

(5x- x/5)/x*100
= (25x-x)/x*100
= 2400

thereis another way of doing it too.

let the no. be 100.
as the no. shud be multiplied by 5 so 500
but divide dby mistake so 20

therefore
((500-20)/20)*100
2400

hope am right if not please send the correct solution
