Yep, I believe you're right (though at one point I did
hear that all the Safeways were going to be converted
to Woolworths - think that idea might have fallen
through) We used to have Safeways in the Sydney area
until Woolies took them over.

The main point of this post was to mention the levels
of interstate influence in the peripheral areas of
NSW, especially as far as shipping freight/produce
from centralised warehouses.

Most of the Murray & southern Riverina is heavily
influenced by Melbourne. As is Broken Hill from
Adelaide. From Brisbane, the influence extends south
to Grafton and out to Moree.

river, and therefore the river belongs in NSW.
However, there is a long history of Victoria being
more interested in bridging the Murray than NSW, and
so it not so surprising that it is happening again.
Take for example the old arrangement of people
changing trains at midnight when they journeyed from
Melbourne to Sydney thanks to the guage mix-up. The
transfer of passengers and freight occurred at Albury
railway station - thus the contruction and maintenance
of the Victorian line continued across the river right
to the station. As you journey downstream along the
Murray, most of the twin towns are dominated by the
Victorian partner, which seems to lead to a Victorian
responsibility for various aspects of local life along
the border region including roads, despite the
alignment of the border.

According to one of the pdf's on the Austroads site, all states have agreed
to introduce the alpha-numeric route numbering system.

But if MRWA arent gnna use it anytime soon thats good news. Gives us more
time to get over there and take some pics. Its such a shame we dont have any
WA reps on this list.

Hey all, I got another reply, this time from Main Roads Western Australia. Looks like they are the only state (may be besides NT) that aren't using the MABC system.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Western Australia uses a route numbering system to assist drivers plan and navigate their journey.
This involves the use of 'route markers' on road direction signs, and the routes are marked in the StreetSmart directory.
The MABC system to which you refer has been considered, but there are no plans to introduce it in WA.

Dave Reynolds

Western Australia were quite slow because a lot of their roads were unsealed
well into the 70's and even early 80's. It seems an unwritten law that there
is no signposting of route numbers on unsealed roads. Anyway, NR95 used to
continue south to albany via what is now SR30 and SR40, Brookton Hwy, used
to be NR98. These routes were changed to state routes in the early 1990's
and it is my guess that WA state routes began appearing in the mid-to-late
1980's,

Correction, SA had SR130. Only for ~15km between Naracoorte and the
Victorian Border. Also, there was SR112, both extensions of Victorian State
Routes that were signposted into SA for continuity. IIRC these routes were
signposted in the very early 1990's.

South Australia never had any state routes before the new system came in.

Subject: Newcastle again!
crazyknights...

Hey all,

Back from Newcastle again just a few notes from the trip......

traffic was horrible on the kariong hill into west gosford. Traffic was
backed up all the way to the top of the hill, i was thinking this was normal
morning peak until i heard on the radio that Woy Woy Rd was closed by a
crash between a coach and a car. That might have had something to do with
it.

New dual carriageway section of Pacific Hwy is open at Wyoming, it looks
like it has been open for about a year, nice concrete surface too!

Travelled across from Lisarow to Erina via 'The Ridgeway' and a couple of
other local roads. Quite a nice drive on a really really narrow and winding
road through the hills, including a 15km/h s-bend at Holgate. I didnt think
it was possible to drive that slow :p

Some new roundabouts on the Entrance Rd at Carlton Rd, Erina and Serpentine
Rd, erina hts iirc. but still no extension of the dual carriageways.

It seems the 'Central Coast Fun Park' has closed or been partially sold off
because there was a new retirement village and some other construction where
the park used to be. However i could still see the waterslides.

At the Bay Village entrance at Bateau Bay i took pics of some unique
roundabout AD signs. These signs have focal points for the u-turn as well as
the other 3 directions. A pic of one is attached below.

Suprisingly there was no traffic through the entrance so i was pretty stoked
about that and its a great drive along Wilfred Barrett Drive between The
Entrance and Noraville, the road has been reasealed and widened and its
great!

on the pacific hwy at Doyalson North there are now traffic lights at rutleys
rd in 90km/h zone!!! can anyone else think of another 90km/h road with
traffic lights??? The only other i can think of is the new england hwy at
beresfield/thornton where it is 90km/h through the Thornton Rd/Weakleys
Dr/Anderson Dr sets of traffic lights.

SR82 & SR135 between Freemans Gap and Pelaw Main has been renamed 'Leggetts
Drive'. Former names were 'Branxton-Toronto Rd' and 'Leggets Lane' as well
as an unnamed section through Richmond Vale.

The roadworks in Vincent St, Cessnock have been completed but the large
yellow signs advising heavy vehicles to use NH1/NH15 still remain on the F3
and the New England Hwy.

Checked out old alignment of SR135 near Maitland and got some pics, as well
as old NH15 at Belford, at Singleton and near Ravenworth.

Found some great old black signs dating from 1974 (aswell as 2 from 1967) at
the Bayswater/Liddell Power Stations interchange near Ravensworth. Piucs
will definately be on my NH15 page which will i am starting now.

Found a few handfulls of black signs on the new england hwy west of maitland
with some dating back to before 1974. pics will definately be on my site in
the coming weeks.

checked out the beresfield bypass AGAIN looking more thoroughly for bridge
plates this time. Please disgregard what i posted about it last time because
i was wrong, this time i wrote it down so i would remember correctly!
Weakleys Flat bridge had no plate and the Tarro rail bridge was dated 1964.
I am emailing Newcastle Council Library for more info. If they cant help i
will have to assume that the whole bypass was built in 1964....

Headed up to Raymond Terrace to get pics of NR1 shields on teh old highway.
I found 8 in total including one sign where 'Pacific Hwy' was coverplated
with 'Adelaide St' but the NR1 shield was left. Also got pics of 2 former
alignments of the pacific hwy in RT from the 1950's.

Checked out old alignment of SR133 in Wallsend, as well as SR123 in
Shortland/Jesmond but no old signs unfortunately.

Got some pics of some very very old bridges in the Maitland area, Dunmore
Bridge on Paterson Rd, Hinton Bridge and Morpeth Bridge, all time truss
bridges with opening spans dating from the early 1900's.

Used a short cut from the F3 to Maitland via SR128 and the Buchanan-East
Maitland Rd, its a great short cut avoiding all the traffic of Weakleys Dr
and NEH, bringing you out at High St, East Maitland. It comes in handy from
where i stayed in Edgeworth to get out west too.

Was planning to head up to Taree for pics of former alignments of the
Pacific Hwy but coz it rained today i didnt get the chance. Oh well, gives
me something to do next time i go to newcastle!

Cheers....Sam

Lonsdale Highway, Adelaide has 2 sets of traffic lights in a 90k/h
zone (was 100k/h years ago too).. although there was talk of slowing
it down, and I haven't been along it in 6 months or more, so it might
be 80 by now anyway ;)

Not quite sure where the 90 starts on Port wakefield road either, but
it's quite possible the Bolivar Road lights fall in that range.

The Mona Vale Rd and Forest Way intersection in St Ives. That section is
90km/h with a traffic light. In my opinion, a traffic light on a 90km/h road
is just crazy.

Also Foreshore Road EB, though there is an 80km/h sign in front of
the lights by ~150m, so that doesn't really count.

The amber phase on these signals would need to be approaching 10
seconds. I would think you would get to the point that the lights
can only hinder more than they help.

>Great stuff, can't wait to see the rest. I am very impressed by the clarity of the pics, i bet your happy with your new cmera!

I am. I get too fussy with picture quality, and at the moment I am in the process of finding a job since I have finished uni, so I have plenty of time to take pics and make music with the band (which I wouldn't mind presuing as a career, but you know the music industry). I am trying to get all of the old NH8, NH31, N1/Alt1 and N79 signs (except all trailblazers, just some older or differently designed ones). Yesterday I got a pic along Royal Parade of a sign with NH31 in a white MR shaped shield with a black 31 on it. I got some NH 8 pics as well but it was crap photo weather, and it was getting dark. Tomorrow I will be going to Ballarat and heading along Ballarat Road again to redo some pics.

The intersection of the Bellarine Hwy and Moolap Station Rd, on the
outskirts of Geelong was also in a 90 zone along the Bellarine Hwy
last time I drove through it. It's been a while though, so I'm not
totally sure.

When they originally went in, they left it as a 100km/h zone, with a
really long amber phase, but I never timed it.

There’s a set at the intersection of the Princes Hwy and Old Princes Hwy at Loftus, on the southern end of the Sutherland Bypass. It’s smack bang in the middle of a 90 zone, but the road through there is definitely not safe at 90 especially with the amount of traffic going through there normally. The road goes over the tourist tram line that goes to the Royal National Park, and there are a couple of bends which you really need to slow down a bit for. Also the road quality through there is fairly poor with covered up potholes all over the place, so all in all a pretty dangerous bit of road. Maybe one day in the next 100 years they’ll actually get to connecting all the little bits of the F6 through Sydney together to get rid of this….

Just looking at one of my NRMA maps and noticed on the Hume Hwy near Bowna,
where a major deviation of the Hume was planned. It says on the map:
"Proposed Highway Deviation Opens Dec 2001" hahahahaha yeah right.......

Hey Sam,

Did you use the flash here? The old nonreflective black sign appears to have a
glowing white (reflective?) border.

Yes i did indeed. The white paint on the old non-reflective signs is
actually reflective :p its just the background that doesnt reflect.

Hey I got a reply from the NT roads department on the alpha-numeric route numbering, as below. WA would comply with Australian Standards also, but they seem to have no interest at the moment.
___________________________________________________________________________

Good afternoon Josh,
The Northern Territory will be adopting the alpha-numeric numbering system.
The Alpha- numeric system is part of the Australian Standards and the Northern
Territory complies with those standards.

How about that former M5 Motorway / Moorebank Av intersection? What
was the speed limit there?
