I just joined the group, so I apologize if this has already been
asked or is off topic.
I am an NRI in the US (New Jersey) with stock in India held for
several decades. I've read in RBI bulletins that it is now allowed
for an NRI to receive a loan from an outside country against stock
held in India. Has anyone had experience with this or done it? What
banks have you found to be receptive?
I've also read that according to the RBI Circular 59 dated 12/9/2002
NRIs can have international credit cards from Indian banks and remit
payments from NRO rupee accounts (so if I had an Indian issued Visa
card used in the US I could pay my charge bill with rupees in my NRO
account.)
Does anyone have experience with this?
I also have a question about what was contained in RBI Cicular of
1/13/2003 regarding liberalization of facilities to NRIs/PIOs stating
that
"At present Authorised dealers are allowed to repatriate funds held
by NRIs/PIOs in their NRO accounts, for the following puroses:...(ii)
Medical Expenses up to USD 100,000."
in the circular this was raised to UDS $1 million effective for a
period up to June 30, 2003.
My question is this: as in previous statements, they still do not
define what kind of documentation of medical expenses is required.
Does anyone know how to successfully petition to take money out of an
NRO account for medical purposes?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.
