Since you are new to BNI in St. Louis I will let you know that it is inappropriate to solicit to BNI Members your services in such a broad manner. (Using this e.mail group).
This e.mail group is made up of members of many chapters. 27 members in the St Louis area offer some type of web development and 14 members offer printing. That's 41 members, who joined BNI with the understanding of exclusivity. If BNI is to work we must honor that agreement both in our own chapter and that of others.
I really hate to rain on your parade but since I've said this much I will also point out that Printing and Web Development are two separate categories, and you are allowed only one. As an example I offer Advertising Specialties as well as Printing to my customers, but when it comes to BNI I only talk about Ad Specialties as it is my category. I also know that the Printer in out chapter offers Ad Specialties, but he honors his agreement to promote only his Printing business in BNI Just as faithfully.
I understand that there are some chapters that run themselves a little looser than required, but that is unfair to those chapters and individual members who honor their BNI Membership, and fellow Members by playing by the rules.
Pupillo Group custom designs websites and printing. We can put the
same logo on your website, your business forms and your business
cards. We can also host your site.
I just became aquainted with BNI in the St. Louis area. They tell me
that there is about a hundred of them, and I'm not sure that they all
know about this group. I will advertise this fact around the area in
my travels to the BNI groups that I am visiting. I plan on visiting as
many as I can. If you would like a special mention when I go to these
meetings, contact me at Pupillo Group . 314-588-0024. Just ask for
Matt, and I will pass out your card to anyone looking for your
particular product or service.
Computer Retail Sales and Service
Ignoring word of mouth, there are two efforts/events that had good ROI for
me. I participate yearly in a local "Discover Fairview Heights" show at
the park. I meet a lot of people there, and even though I couldn't go in
'06, I still have a person every couple of months say "I talked to a girl
a couple years ago at the Discover FVH Day.." It's a small event, and I'm
disappointed that I won't get to participate this year since I'm moving.
The second was from a news editorial I wrote after the April 2006 Tornado.
I was got hit in my car driving home by that tornado, and my business'
building was also affected. I wrote a letter thanking the civil service
people who worked that event, as I was impressed by the way they handled
it. I hadn't thought about it, but people started coming in and calling
like crazy after that letter! Accidental marketing, but interesting
regardless. That furthers my interest in wanting to get to do an
editorial piece in the local newspaper(s) on a regular basis, if I could
get a good contact at one of them.
I don't invest a lot in marketing... It's too expensive. I find that
events I can invest time in have better results than the things I can pay
for.
I will have a marketing campaign to start this fall, because we're
offering new services. I'm now an authorized IBM/Lenovo Warranty Repair
Center. There's finally a good reason to buy laptops from me instead of
the box stores other than preferring to deal with me!
Other Thing's I've Tried:
I did the Dierberg's Receipt program while Coldstone had the Buy One Get
One Free campaign. That got me name recognition which was worthwhile. I
did the Auffenberg Auto Bargain Program, which got me 0 referrals. I did
one of the newspaper mailers, which also had 0 return, but it was before I
opened the retail store. I've also been in the local coupon "magazines"
which also had 0 return, but again that was before I had a retail store.
I'm amazed how many Yellow Pages calls I get. I was even accused of "not
being in the book" when I used to just do the SBC book, so I added
Hometown last year. I've done various newspaper "sponsored" ads for
special programs, also 0 return. I donate a free tune-up service to most
fund-raising programs, and almost everyone who has turned it in has done
other business with me, which has helped name recognition as well. I have
vinyl letters on my car which has gotten me customers from various parking
lots. I'm going to add some phrasing which should increase that soon too.
My local chamber isn't a terribly active one, and I'm not good at "happy
hour networking", so I prefer more community-based, or hands-on (BNI-type)
marketing.
I've found a small amount of in-store signage promotions have been
fruitful. I'd like to try a 'referral rewards' program, but I haven't
figured out how to manage one that fits my business style yet. I use such
a low margin, and it's flat rate based off my cost (either in part or
labor). I don't run sales. That No Baloney attitude to business is what
makes my customers loyal to me.

Good Morning All,
I didn't introduce myself, but my name is Kara Pritchard and I own the
Computer Room in Fairview Heights. We provide custom computer hardware,
parts, and repairs, and other geek-related help. While there are few
people who aren't good referrals for me, other computer geeks are the
best! Whether they're independent computer consultants themselves, own
small repair shops, or are professional computer geeks working for another
company, people who do what I do are the fastest to recognize the value in
the parts I sell (both in price and quality) and respect the experience we
have to offer.
I have been in BNI for 4+ years, starting while I was still operating out
of my home (I opened the retail location 3yrs ago after providing on-site
services for 7 years prior). I have held VP and P positions, as well as
Marketing and Education coord. I have transferred into a new group (6 mos
ago) and currently help with mentoring the new members of the group (which
is pretty much everyone).
My current Mentoring project includes meeting with the 10min speakers the
week prior to their presentation. I am trying to help them develop their
presentations into training sessions for their fellow chapter members and
learn to realize the value of every minute they have to speak during a
meeting. This week, I helped a member who hosts home wine tasting parties
convert her 10 minute from "telling about the company" to a mock wine
tasting party to train us how to "taste" various types of juices as she
would be doing with wines. I hope this will not only be fun, but make the
speaker more comfortable, and help other members understand (and talk)
about what she actually does! We also talked about not wasting her
infomercial with the line "I'm ABC from XYZ and I'm giving my 10 minute
today, so I'll talk to you then".
Sometimes its awkward to find ways to open dialogue with another chapter
member about the things they can do to be better members without making
the other member feel uncomfortable. I hope to use these pre-10min MOMs
to improve the content of our meetings and help the members train the rest
of us better, thus improving the quality of the member, and improving the
quality of their referrals!

Hello Everyone, How are you? I would like to pass along something i
did for my ten minute last week.
Instead of being about my services and referrals for me, i used it to
educate the chapter on what BNI is about and how to help build our
chapter.
i called it " how to help build our chapter "
this is what i did, pass out the page upside down so no one sees,
spoke about the mission, goals , etc.... about BNI, then stopped and
had everyone turn over their sheets, gave them about three minutes to
fill out, then i had them pass it over to the person on there right,
now what happens next is this.
the person recieving the sheet had to do a MOM with that person, then
they would need to do a MOM with the person they gave it to. at the
MOM you would bring your sheet to discuss your list, then the goal
would be to bring those people as guest.
So in essence this developed two MOM's per person within the chapter.
Example: If we have 15 people that would develop about 30 MOM's to
try and bring these guest.
***Check it out in the files on the left.***
I thought it went over well, will keep track of the deveoplment and
keep you informed.
any questions , please call me.
thanks for your time

I have two strong team members from another chapter that I likely would
not have met if it weren't for BNI. I did not meet them at a special BNI
event, however. I met them through visiting their chapters. We actually
have overlapping "categories" and are even competitive in some areas, but
we've found a great balance by working together in our strength areas.
The two other team members include an on-site computer consultant and a
printer/copier sales person. I have a retail store, including in-store
and on-site repairs and customer computer hardware sales (which includes
some workgroup printers). They rely on me for computer hardware, repairs,
and new system sales. I rely on them for specialty support (or sales) in
their areas (printer/copiers, Apple/Mac, etc).

Kass,
how is this for a long chapter name "BNI Springfield Metropolitan
Area Referral Team". They go by S.M.A.R.T.- Springfield.
Sincerely,
Mike
Which chapters in our region have held 1 or more Mega Moms? A Mega
Mom is a meeting after hours at a members place of business.
Our chapter has had 2 with-in the past 6 months. The 1st one was
held at Instant Imprints where we all had the opportunity to learn
more about the products and services they offer. We also were taught
what is involved in screen printing and walked away with a new t-
shirt that night.
The 2nd was held here at my studio. I took a photo of each member as
they arrived. We then walked the group through how a photo keepsake/
slideshow is created. We used the Takin' Care of Business theme, and
everyone from our chapter received their own copy of the completed
DVD.
We have another one planned with-in the next couple of months with a
different member of our chapter.
A Mega Mom is also a great time to bring a friend or guest who might
benefit from the Chapter member's services! They get to meet the
person they might want to do business with, ask questions and see a
little bit more of their business in action!
Please post any positive things your chapter has done with any type
of meetings outside of your regularly scheduled Chapter events.
We would all like to hear what others are sucessfully doing!

Good Morning~
Please share an example of a referral you received from a BNI meeting
outside of your chapter (MSP, Regional Meeting, Mentoring program, etc)
that resulted in business you would not have received if you did not
attend that particular event.
Or an example of a Power Team member you have met outside of your
chapter at one of the above mentioned events.
I invite as many responses as possible to help us all start thinking
outside of the box for additional ways we can give and receive
referrals, as well as build our Power Teams outside of our respective
Chapters.
Thank You in advance for your thoughts and ideas!
