I'd like to add that in addition to price you need to be sure to maintain control over your domain name.  I have seen many instances where companies allow a consultant or web design shop register the domain on their behalf.  You might later find that you cannot transfer that domain when you no longer use that vendor.  There are also similar issues when using the lesser known, ultra cheap registration services.  In some cases, if you let the domain expire, even by a day or two, you might have trouble renewing it.  I know someone who lost their domain that way.

Bottom line is that you should be sure to register the domain in the name of your company, make sure you have the registrar login credentials and access to the associated email account (that email account is critical if there is ever a problem).  And try to use a well known service, even if it's not the cheapest.  My 2 cents.  You domain will become a critical asset and needs to be protected.

Cheers,
Carl

my  comment is use godaddy and register it in your name not in the company-then you can transfer it to the company later on-there are too many reasons to explain but one is that in start ups anything can and does happen and holding the domain in your name gives you leverage in negotiations should things unravel

I used to recommend 1and1... no longer. We are in the process of moving what
little business we have from them.

We use site5.com as a hosting provider for our application. They treat you like
an adult, they have great tech support.

We started with them just to reserve a domain... then shared hosting of a LAMP
stack app, to a dedicated server.

The prices are great. The service is great.

At last Friday's breakfast Lenny Greenberg mentioned he was givng a talk on maximizing your startup potential, maximizing your ability to manage planning and unplanned successes and failures. It's tonight at 6pm at RAMADA Silicon Valley, 1217 Wildwood Ave Sunnyvale, CA 94089 Cost is $16 and includes dinner.. He was kind enough to share a copy of the talk with me and it looks to be a very interesting presentation that I will be attending. He will draw on his experiences bootstrapping TapToTalk.

For more on the event see http://www.ieee-scv-tmc.org/meetings/all/2011-02-03
For more on Assistyx (Lenny's startup) see http://www.assistyx.com/

It should be a good event for bootstrappers./SeanM  http://www.skmurphy.com/

Godaddy is one of the cheapest.
However I prefer to spend the extra $5 and use wsmdomains (a tucows reseller)
which isn't as spammy/annoying/low quality experience as godaddy.

When I want to save a couple bucks I use hosting-nation.com for registrations
(smaller company, less intuitive UI). Neither if these companies have a super
bowl commercial or a racing team but instead spend their money on quality
products and support :)

FYI, godaddy is the cheapest when you take private domain registration out of the equation.  Hovers from tucows offers it as part of their price.  So just make sure that what you want is included.  Otherwise, that $7 domain quickly balloons to $20.

I use Godaddy for domain name registration and, though it's the only one I've tried, it's satisfied my needs. My customer service experience actually exceeded expectations.

My website is hosted for free at weebly.com, which also provides an incredibly easy-to-use (if rather limiting) GUI to build a basic website. You can upgrade to paid service for more features.

Hi All,

I finally got my papers back from the state and an EIN number. Now I'm ready to
open a bank account, but where?

So far, here's what I've heard:
Wells Fargo - have heard 1 positive, 1 negative experience
Bank of the West - have heard 1 positive

Does anyone have any experience with either of these?
Star One Credit Union
Tech Credit Union

Thanks much,
Susan

Another alternative to Silicon Valley Bank is Bridge Bank, they also have a technology focused practice./SeanM

Some credit unions do Keypoint and Tech Credit Union does.  I have used Tech CU before and liked them. Currently I am using Chase but will probably switch to either Keypoint and Tech Credit Union this year.

I am thumbs down on SVB, having used them for 4-5 years and I am all praises for HSBC.

SVB had ‘fee’ for everything including clicking on a check image in your online transaction report. HSBC charges hardly any fees. I would recommend HSBC wholeheartedly.

For just parking a domain, I like using Hostway.com. They're inexpensive (~$10) and they allow you domain forwarding for free so you can park your page by forwarding it to a URL of your choice instead of having to deal with your domain be a spammy parked domain advertisement page.

The only downside to Hostway is that you don't get customized DNS settings there. That will not be an issue for most people and there are other ways of getting DNS hosting to make up for their lack of DNS customization, but it could be an annoyance if you want to integrate a lot of third party services under your own domain name. Still, for $10/month, I'm not expecting them to roll out the red carpet.

GoDaddy is a pretty good registrar too as some people have already mentioned. The only downside to GoDaddy is that I can't stand their hard selling checkout process and I agree with Sashaov that the interface is a little busy.

I've been with HSBC based on lowest fees, and I've been very happy with them.

Some credit unions do Keypoint and Tech Credit Union does.  I have used Tech CU before and liked them. Currently I am using Chase but will probably switch to either Keypoint and Tech Credit Union this year.

The traditional route for tech start-ups is SVB or Bridge Bank. However, if you
are just starting Credit Unions are worth considering as there are no fees and
better interest rates. Generally once you have VC funding you would then
transfer to a business bank. Indeed I just picked up a client with 18 employees
and they are still using a Credit Union very happily with no wish to change.
However, this is the exception.

So at the end of day it is very much a personal preference.

Leslie

Hi folks,

I’ve been thinking about generating buzz and awareness for my bootstrap.  At my size, best option would be via PR. Does anyone have suggestions on how to approach this?  I’m interested in:

1)      Best PR agency profile: new v. old, large v. small, etc.

2)      Deal structure

Would also love intros if you can make them.

Thank you.

Most PR agencies work on a monthly retainer model of between 5-15K. Solo practitioners or smaller firms may be open to working on a project basis or a per release basis. You don't say what your company does or what else you have done for lead generation (I am assuming that is your real goal not buzz/awareness) so it's hard to put your question in context.

Theresa Shafer blogged about "Ten Reasons to issue a press release" at http://www.skmurphy.com/blog/2008/02/22/10-reasons-to-write-a-press-release/
  1. Announce a strategic partnership or alliance
  2. Issuing a statement on a hot issue
  3. New client acquisition
  4. Holding a seminar or workshop
  5. Availability of white paper or article
  6. Company revenue, sales, or profit
  7. Announce new member of board of directors or board of advisors
  8. invitation for a special offer
  9. Participation in local event or tradeshow
  10. Winning an award
I blogged some tips for your early press relases at http://www.skmurphy.com/blog/2009/12/01/tips-for-a-startups-early-press-releases/

We use eReleases which distributes over PR newswire for about half the price ($400). See http://www.ereleases.com/submit.html for details, we have been working with them for more than three years and been very pleased.

Normally you are going to select an PR agency that has existing relationships with the journalists or writers that you are targeting if you are going to go the agency route. Their most common question will be "why should the reader care about your company/announcement" since they have to be offering "newsworthy" announcements to their contacts to maintain their reputation.

Lenny, this Mark Suster post is not only good but funny: I agree with his assessment of good sales people:

  • Are motivated by cash. None of this namby pamby options stuff or “do it for the team – we’re all in this together” crap. Cash, cash, cash.
  • Are more mercenaries than missionaries. That doesn’t make them bad – it just means that they know that they are “hired guns” and they act accordingly
  • Many great ones don’t thrive in the early phase of a company where the sales is more consultative or evangelical. They like a solid product, well defined pricing, good references to sell against, a clear quota and well defined competitors.
  • They are as good at selling you as they are at selling your product to customers. That means if you don’t understand the way they work you’re susceptible to being blind sided.
I thought I would pass along a four page "how to" article that Mark Duncan and I collaborated on: “An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Sales.” We developed it as an adjunct to a custom sales training workshop. It’s intended for entrepreneurial engineers who need to develop and debug a B2B sales process. Here is our introduction:

Most articles and books on sales are intended for people who sell. In contrast, this article is for the technical founders of a software startup who need to better understand the sales process, with practical tips on how they can be more effective as part of the selling team.

Specifically, we’ll review frequent reasons for the sales process being broken, the need for an iterative approach in refining the sales learning curve, key steps in the sales process, preparing for a sales call, sales methodologies, and key sales positions.

We were contacted recently the folks at XanEdu publishing to license it for use in a package of supplementary materials–a coursepack—for a new course “Building Internet Start-Ups: Risk, Reward, and Failure” taught by Groupon co-founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

We are considering revising it this year and welcome any feedback./SeanM www.skmurphy.com 408-252-9676

Any suggestions for a master or visa business credit card? For personal use I
have Discover and Citibank because they have the best cashback program. I
applied for a business card with Discover, but I also need a Master/Visa since
not everyone takes Discover. Citibank has a 'thank you point' card which is
0.625% if you take the cash option. Are there any other better deals out there?

Thank you all so much for the bank suggestions! I ended up with Keypoint since
they have the lowest minimum balance requirement without a fee. So far I'm
happy with them.

Thankful,
Susan
