" ...let's say the moving van is loaded up and is ready to deliver our things to our new home. Will the movers need some special paperwork? When we arrive at the border to enter, what will they be asking us?"
Claudia: If you do that, I'm afraid they'll be asking you to turn around and go home. This is where it gets sticky. Coming to Canada as a visitor and staying 6 months is one thing, but a 'visitor' doesn't move his furniture across the border. For that you need to immigrate!
Sell it there and buy again in Canada (it's cheaper), or store it until you get approval to immigrate. There is very little in between.
Getting a driver's license is not such a big deal, nor is car insurance, so at this point, I wouldn't be concerned.
I suggest coming up as a visitor, look around and find out where you'd like to settle -- you can even purchase a property while you're here, and gradually make the move. You'll need time and probably a few trips back and forth before it's all settled. Personal effects are okay to bring over, but even so much as a toaster could cause you to be questioned. Remember, you are not 'moving', you are 'visiting'.
To immigrate, you will need to apply from stateside and wait... and wait... and wait. Plan for about a year.
Please go through CIC link I sent you and read everything very carefully, both the info for visitors and for immigration -- http://www.cic.gc.ca
We wish you well in 'your' new venture. By the way, thank you for the heads up on the Canada Report site -- we had no idea it had been transferred to a new server and you were getting a message that said, "Welcome to the new home of Canada Report". This has now been corrected.
To everyone, feel free to use the Message Board to post your questions as well. We do get busy, but do check the message board to answer questions. We encourage you to help answer the questions of others if you can, and don't wait for us. It's supposed to be a discussion board, so questions about Canada in general are warmly welcomed.
Hi Gail, First of all, congratulations on your new adventure, and secondly thank you for being there to help us with the myriad questions we have. I really don't know where we would be without your help. Is there any exact length of time one must stay in the US between 180 day visits? Could we just take a ferry across to WA. for a few days and come back? Also, let's say the moving van is loaded up and is ready to deliver our things to our new home. Will the movers need some special paperwork? When we arrive at the border to enter, what will they be asking us? If we say we are staying for 6 months, will they be asking for health insurance proof and some kind of earnings statement before they allow us to enter? And if that wasn't enough to pick your brains about, how does one get a drivers license and car insurance in Canada? I believe ours is good for a year? AAACK!! The devil really is in the details as they say. I'm looking forward to the "new" Canada Report, and hopefully someday I will be able to help someone in this situation, as you have helped us. Warm Regards, Claudia

Iti sright that it may take more than 3 years to find
a job in Canada in your profession. Be mentally
prepared to lok for odd jobs in the Canada as this
country takes a longer period to find a job in the

Dear all
I'm a 47 years old glass artist, architect
and civilengineer graduated in Germany, plan
to immigrate to Canada in this year.
Due to the lawyer, the best way to apply is
through a self-employed application's category.
My preferent destination is Vancouver.
I'd like to share and to get advise from all
of you regarding the procedures of imigrating
to Canada
Kusnady
I have got Canadian Visa for Permanent Residency. I want to travel to
Canada bu Road from NewYork. Is it allowed and is there any Road
Check Post authorised to perform Landing formailities. Please advise
as otherwise I will have to think about Flying to Toronto Airport,
though I wnat to avoid the expenditure and hassles.

Dear All,
Could someone tell me how much time it is taking to get an interview
call from the authoriies these days to immigrate to canada through UK
Centre?
I filed my case on 22nd Feb 2001 through UK centre as independent
immigrant (I am electrical / telecom profesional) and received the
acknowledgement from the authorities on 4th March 2001 that will be
required for an interview within 12-15 months. Another of my colleauge
(exactly similiar case as mine) applied one month after me through UK
Centre and received a reply after 8 days that she will be called for
interview after 6 months.
Another friend of mine (exactly same case) was told that he would be
called for an interview after 12-15 months (Aug 2000) but he is
invited for an interviiew after 7 months only!!
Why is there so much difference in cases.
What is the general speed of cases being considered in UK Centre.
Can anyone help please?
Best Regards,
Faisal

Mjpor: Hello and welcome.
My uncle, a chartered accountant in Holland immigrated to Canada some years
ago. Difficulties with the language and Canadian documentation prevented
him from working in a Canadian position at the same level of accomplishment
as his work in Holland.
He worked in a lesser capacity (lesser pay) for an accounting firm until he
was more familiar with Canada and its language and policies in the financial
industry.
Then, he set up his own accounting firm which he ran successfully until he
retired a few years ago. He became known as the honest Dutchman, one who was
scrupulously and meticulously honest, to the penny. In fact, many clients
didn't want to find a new accountant, so as a result, he was 'semi-retired'
for a period while he helped his clients make the transition.
I guess that would be my advice to you as well, since it worked so well for
him.
Best,
Gail

Ragu: Toronto and Vancouver are good cities for engineers simply because
they are the areas with the highest population and therefore, the most jobs.
I'd keep an eye on the employment sections for the national papers, like the
Globe and Mail, as well as any postings in the engineering sites, which have
already been posted in the list.
As mentioned earlier, the message archive is available at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canadareport/messages
Try doing a search of the archive using the keyword 'engineer'. It should
turn up lots of info for you.

Thanks 'a b'. I'll answer you while everyone is busy reading my last
diatribe.
Most areas of Toronto are just fine, that is clean and safe. You'll find
that each neighbourhood has its good points and bad, and generally their own
distinct flavour. Much of this selection process is a personal preference,
but you'll definitely be able to tell if you're in an area that's less
desireable.
The easiest way to tackle this problem is to explore the neighbourhood
closest to your work, or at least within a short subway ride away, because
driving is the pitts and adds to the pollution (which isn't nearly as bad as
most large American cities).
The TTC or Toronto Transit is a network of buses, subway lines and something
called the "Go Train" in the outlying areas. Most of these various means of
getting around the city are available by purchasing one fare ( I'm not sure
of the fare now... maybe as much as $2?) and transferring to bus, subway
etc. The Go Train costs extra but connects with the major subway lines from
some 30 miles away (don't quote me on the mileage).
If it's your first visit, or you aren't sure where you'll be working, look
for temporary accommodations like furnished apartments, apartment hotels,
etc. That will give you time to poke around without committing yourself to a
one or two year lease which is very common in Toronto and most Canadian
cities.
As to the cost of a one bedroom apartment? The further away from city
centre, the cheaper it gets, but in general, expect to pay at least $600 to
$800 a month for anything decent.
Hope this helps and thanks for the nice 'generic' question! :-)
Gail

I have my residence visa and I think I will travel on
late june. What is a good neighborhood (or city) in
the area of Toronto for living ?. I mean a
respectable-cheap area near everything: TTC (is this
the urban train ?), good work resources (I´m
electronic engineer), etc.
How much cost a one room apartment (for renting of
course) ?
Thanks in advance and if I can solve any doubt just
send it to the group.

Welcome to all new subscribers of Canada Report.
As some of you may have noticed the canadareport.com site is off line. It
appears it is caught in limbo between two domain registrars and we have no
choice but to wait until it is sorted out through all the security checks such a
move entails. It must be somewhat like immigrating!
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and hope that it will be
back on line in the next few days -- however -- we are told Internic can take up
to 40 days to make the correction!
I also apologize to those who have written over the last week or so and not had
a response. Our web publishing offices can get pretty busy when there are
deadlines to be met. At these times, we generally hope that fellow readers can
respond to questions. If not, one of us will eventually get there and answer.
This is a good time to talk about what Canada Report is, and what it isn't.
What is Canada Report ?
Canada Report was created for those who are coming to Canada as independent
immigrants after we had watched so many new immigrants make costly mistakes.
Whether they were buying property, starting businesses without researching the
viability, or buying businesses that are already doomed to failure, they often
didn't listen to the voice of reason. As newcomers to the country, they just
weren't aware of the pitfalls.
Where Jurgen and I can help you is - as Canadians, people who live and do
business in Canada. Our own experiences as Canadians, one a born Canadian with a
lifetime in business and the other a 35 year immigrant who has always been
self-employed gives us access to information you won't find anywhere else, the
non-documented information that a person only gains through 'trial and error'.
We can help with questions about which city to choose, or how to approach
Canadians, lifestyle choices and the Canadian culture. And particularly, we can
help with questions about doing business in Canada.
Our business is to help you and your business make the leap to Canadian soil and
land softly. We have worked as consultants with international clients wishing to
buy or build property, both commercial and residential, and we have consulted
with them to establish new businesses here in Canada.
In many cases we have built websites connecting new Canadian businesses with
their contacts and offices in the 'old country'. Here's an example of Sattler
Studios who have a stained glass business in Germany and one here in Nova
Scotia:
http://www.sattlerglas.com
Obviously, we can't help with 'employment' searches. That information is readily
available online, and in the past, we have given freely of our time to do the
searches for you, but our time is getting very tight with new all the new
projects we are involved in. Besides that, we are self employed entrepreneurs
and have been for the better part of our working lives.
While we're on the subject, we also don't relate well to questions about
Immigration. Jurgen tells stories of coming over on the boat, so I think he must
be one of Canada's early pioneers! I taught ESL at an immigrant service agency
and at university, so I'm a little closer to the source in some ways.
At any rate, we can be of only limited help to those of you exploring whether or
not you should immigrate, or how to go about it, other than, again, finding the
information for you on the web and saving you the search time.
You've probably noticed that I direct almost all immigration/gov't/policy
questions to the correct source of answers, Canada Immigration. It's the third
item down in the middle of the main Canada government website, so you can't miss
it:
http://www.gc.ca
(in French and English)
It easy to remember -- www.gc.ca is short for Government of Canada (gc) Canada
(ca). Spend some time going through the list of departments and agencies. You'll
be surprised at the information that applies to 'you' and your own situation.
Then, notice where it says "Non-Canadians" - that probably means you! If you
click on this link, it brings you to a great new website called Canada
International. This site has put together 'everything you ever wanted to know'
about Canada, including how to immigrate, find employment, download and print
applications, get settled, learn English, go to school, even start a business.
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/menu-e.asp
Who Are We?
We are, first of all, business consultants, trainers and educators. Our focus is
on sustainability, be it in business, the environment, or in people. We are
often reminded that the people who built Canada all came from countries just
like yours. They brought with them the skills and abilities and perseverance to
start grand projects and see them through to completion. They are the dreamers,
and the doers. These are the same people Canada needs to grow into the 21st
century and the kinds of people we like to work with.
We also like to work with folks who plan to retire in Canada, particularly Nova
Scotia. Why? Because we are planning for retirement and we live in Nova Scotia!
In our opinion, Nova Scotia is one of the best places in the whole country.
Retirees or near retirees from the US and other countries are often in
transition and plan to move their business or sometimes a marketable hobby, as
they slow to a saner lifestyle from big American cities. We can assist them in
making the right choices and making the transition to a new Canadian lifestyle.
To note: the biggest concern of Canadian officials for retirees is whether or
not you can support yourself -- both now, and in the event of major medical
expenses. You can buy land, build or buy a home, start a business, live pretty
much like a Canadian, except for the above two issues.
Finally, again for those needing employment or immigration info, if you've
already done a thorough search of the Canadian websites and you've even tried
putting a search term like 'jobs in Toronto' into a engine like
http://www.dogpile.com -- and you're still stuck for an answer, email us on the
Canada Report list.
You have probably also discovered by default, what we do for a living. Questions
are free, consulting services, extensive research and marketing, business plan
or website development, property purchasing and assistance with soft-landings in
Canada are not.
Having said all that, when the problem with the Canada Report domain is
resolved, we will be making changes on the site to more appropriately address
the function of Canada Report.
Our Personal Projects
We have just purchased a rural property on the coast. It's an old 40 acre farm
needing lots of work. Our plan is to demonstrate a self-sufficient lifestyle
with as little impact on the environment as possible and to do so by adopting
the latest technologies in renewable energy and communications. We invite your
questions on living independently in Canada.
For those interested, Jurgen is the General Manager for About Alternative Energy
at:
http://altenergy.about.com
Last but not least, there is a Canada Report Forum available for all your
questions (including Immigration and Employment!) at:
http://forums.delphi.com/canadareport/start
Have a great Spring everyone. Hope to meet you in Canada!

Rick: I'm not sure where you would find a comparative site, however, you might
want to check out Statistics Canada. They do a reasonable job on a per city

Thank you for your reply. My fiance and I have been to inumerable
web-sites, including the one you suggested, and are calling the consulate
tomorrow. Our situation -- being both only 18 years of age and having
lived in the US for at least the past four years -- is a little tricky, so
I guess we may not have much luck trying to find another couple with a
situation such as ours. I appreciate your reply, and welcome any thoughts

Hi Jessica: You might want to have a 'read-through' the family sponsorship info
provided by Canada Immigration and Citizenship. This document provides a
downloadable application and outlines applicable fees (yes, there's a charge for
immigrating). There is also a link to CIC Call Centres where your questions will
all be answered.

In California, you might want to check with the CIC satellite office at:

However, since they don't process immigration applications in LA, your closest
US point for that is Buffalo:
