Subject: City of Beaverton: Press Releases

New press release (Jump into the Holiday Season at Beaverton’s Tree Lighting and Open House) from City of Beaverton is posted on the City of Beaverton Web site:

http://www.beavertonoregon.gov/government/press_releases.aspx

- December 4 Event to Feature Children’s Holiday Craft Workshop, Santa, Sing-a-Long, the Beaverton Civic Theatre’s Holiday Production and More -

BEAVERTON, Oregon (November 13, 2009) – Ushering in the holiday season, Mayor Denny Doyle and the Beaverton City Council invite the community to come celebrate at Beaverton’s 6th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and holiday open house on December 4. The holiday open house will begin at 5:30 p.m. inside Beaverton City Library followed by the Tree Lighting Ceremony in City Park at 7 p.m. Other highlights include a children’s holiday craft workshop, a special visit from Santa Claus, and a community sing-a-long. The City will be hosting a canned food drive for the Oregon Food Bank during the event with collection barrels located in the library foyer.

Committed to improving sustainability, Mayor Doyle decided against cutting down a tree for this year’s celebration. Instead, the tree is a living, 110-foot Ponderosa Pine located inside City Park, which will be decorated with more than 13,000 LED lights. The new event combines the holiday open house previously held at City Hall and the annual tree lighting event previously held at The Round.

“It was important for us to host an event that would be an opportunity for the community to come together while being both sustainable and cost-effective,” said Mayor Doyle. “I’d like to invite everyone to join us for this festive community celebration.”

Beaverton Tree Lighting Schedule of Events

Between 5:30 p.m. and 6:50 p.m., the City of Beaverton will hold an open house inside in Beaverton City Library. A children’s holiday craft workshop, presented by Radio Disney, will have an assortment of activities and games for children and their families. Light refreshments will be provided by Costco and the City of Beaverton. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit several City of Beaverton booths to find out more about City programs, upcoming events and City-sponsored projects. During the open house, those young and young at heart will have a chance to meet with Santa to make any last minute holiday requests before he puts the finishing touches on his gift list.

At 6:50 p.m., attendees can walk down Candy Cane Lane from the open house to the tree lighting program which will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in City Park. During which, attendees can expect to see performances from Radio Disney, Beaverton Youth Cheer and Dance and a local choir. There will also be drawings for tickets to various events including the Portland Auto Show and a Disney production of Beauty and the Beast.

At 8 p.m., the Beaverton Civic Theatre will present “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” in the library auditorium. Tickets are $5 with a new toy donation to the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Toy and Joy toy drive. Otherwise, general admission is $15, $12 for students, seniors and groups and $5 for children ten and under.

Street Closures

To ensure the safety of pedestrians, SW 5th Street between SW Hall Boulevard and SW Watson Avenue will be closed from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Westbound 5th Street traffic will be diverted south on SW Tucker Avenue and northbound Hall Boulevard traffic will be diverted eastbound at SW 5th Street.

For more information, please visit www.beavertonoregon.gov or contact Erin Hickey, Events Program Coordinator, at (503) 350-4088. In case of inclement weather, check the City’s Web site or call (503) 350-4097 after 2 p.m. on the day of the tree lighting for updated information.

I guess there may be some confusion then because I called and spoke to someone at this same number and she stated that it was for all Washington county residents and that is also what it says on the top of the application.  Also, I know that in the Cornelius-Forest Grove area they have the Fire department providing a similar program to residents.

Here’s something to share, please.

Food safety helps people stay well during the holidays. Here are safe and easy turkey-cooking directions in English and Spanish.

If the files are too big to send, I am willing to respond to people individually.

Hi all,

Maureen has a couple of safe preparation guides for turkey preparation – one in English and another in Spanish.  They are rather large documents, so I will send them individually…  here’s the English and the Spanish will come to you shortly.

Hi all,

I’ve verified that it’s okay to share this information with our group about Thanksgiving meals which will be provided in Beaverton and Tigard.  David tells me they can serve about 700 meals at the Elsie Stuhr Center, and this can be increased by about 10% using back up resources if necessary.  More details about both meal sites are in his message below and the attached flyers.  Please share with others.  Thanks.

Hi everyone:

Thank you for all you are doing.

Attached are two bilingual flyers for a free Thanksgiving Day dinner.  This is the sixth year we have done this at the Elsie Stuhr Center in Beaverton and the third time in Tigard.  Last year we served 550 meals at the Elsie Stuhr Center and close to 150 meals in Tigard.  This year we are hoping to serve 900 meals at these two sites.  This meal is sponsored by Reser’s, New Seasons, Tigard Minute Man Press, Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District and St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Each year we have obtained Beaverton School District approval to distribute the flyers to elementary schools in Beaverton.  We received the approval today of the Beaverton Thanksgiving Flyer and attach a copy of the approval.  The Tigard flyer has not be submitted to the Beaverton School District since it is for an out of district location.

I am providing this information to you so that you can publicize the availability of the meal to anyone you think needs a boost.  We try to mimic a restaurant experience as guests are seated at tables and the meals are served by volunteers.

Please let us know if you will be able to help publicize this event.

Thank you again.

Dear Faithful Friends,

Since November is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Month, we want to take this opportunity to thank you all for everything you are doing to help the homeless and needy families and youth living within our Beaverton Community. Your strong support is making a difference in the lives of those in need of our help.

You are all part of a diverse group of the Beaverton School District’s faithful friends, ranging from social service agencies, business associations, faith based congregations and organizations, civic/service groups and generous individuals. You are the “village” helping to raise our children! In this current time of need we could not effectively address the hardships of our community without your supportive teamwork. The Beaverton School District, Beaverton Family Resource Center, the Title X McKinney-Vento Homeless Education program, and all of the individuals we serve appreciate each and every one of you more than you will ever know.

We believe that community awareness if the first step in addressing all challenges. In an effort to raise awareness our office sends out a bi-weekly update on our homeless student numbers and a quarterly update of the number of families served through the Beaverton Family Resource Center. As well as any current gap areas of need within our community. If you would like to receive this bi-weekly update please email me back to let us know and we'll add you to the list.

We also track all volunteer hours benefiting the Beaverton Family Resource Center, so if your group is directly involved in an outreach project in support of our center please contact us and we will document the project, number of volunteers and hours served through your organization. This data is very important to funding and future grant opportunities. We appreciate your support with this effort.

If you have any questions, concerns, or wonderful ideas on how we can continue to serve the needs of our Beaverton community please don't hesitate to contact our office. Many blessings to you all.

With appreciation always,

When I googled the word Illakano, it appears that this is a language spoken in India-is that correct? There is an extensive network of people from India, Pakistan and other countries of that part of the globe here locally in the metro area.

There is the Kalindra Cultural Arts Org, located in Beav.- it might be  be worth a call to them to see how the family could be connected to ed. and other contacts/resources they may have available or know about.

Anyone have some ideas?
